You will find both good and bad video, but with enough help and recommendations from us, you will find good YT tutorials (please, take it from me, I've been to art school and have years of experience in the professional field. I know what usually works and doesn't work for people trying to learn). EDIT: Even though I say art is hard, don't let that deter you. It's OK if it's hard, it creates a healthy challenge that feels amazing to overcome.

I don’t really do harsh lmao
I guess biggest thing that sticks out to me is the hair and fur. The shadow and light shapes on the face are pretty straightforward, but the fur and hair have much more complexity. Brushstrokes go in so many directions that you lose a lot of flow.
I would simplify them into bigger shapes, then draw all the strands while keeping the big shapes obvious. You might wanna study long hair from photos and try to design what you see. I think it’s already great. But that’s what I’d do

you can get a sense of the light and shadows from a bird's eye view like this. and combine it with the colors of this other ship I found which is cast in daylight to get accurate colors (since the first image is close to sunset).

No problem. Always look for reference. Google is your friend. I used "pirate ship aerial view" and "pirate ship from above" for example.

You can also reference video games with pirate ships that are made nowadays and have more realistic graphics as a good substitue for photos.

I know a girl who is 5 years younger that draws very good, very high leveled. And i admit it, i feel jealous about it. She's has been studying drawing and had teachers who teached her.

I all i learned i had to do it on my own, (wish i had the same luck) i feel so impotent that i want to cry, really.

There is virtually no real useful critique I could give besides brush choice and softness of some brushstrokes vs others, but none of that really matters when the painting is this well executed. The only thing I can say is, the line where the skull opens that the top is thinner and not as noticeable in the original reference. But in yours it's thicker and more obvious. But that's such a minor thing. Regardless, this is fantastic and you should be proud of yourself.

Right, like rokaya said, we can't go really go back in time. All we can do is make what we can of the present to shape the future. What Buffy said earlier is also very true in regarsd to comparisons. I think it's best to just go on your own pace and view your artistic growth as your own individual journey as opposed to a race where some may be farther ahead of or behind you. As long as you're doing what you can you'll still be making progress towards the point you want to reach.

I'm in concept art for example. I can tell you, that while some expensive school teach it, it's a waste of money and time since you can learn it all online for much, MUCH cheaper than any art school. Possibly even for free. But if you are someone that needs to be around lots of people that are similar to you, art school may be a good idea despite the loans. You can make friends and colleagues for life (I know I did.). You can probably learn graphic design easily enough with good online tutorials (possibly by working professionals). These are just two examples.

Since 2010-2020 I've questioned art school heavily for up and coming artists unless they need to be around other artists while learning to help foster a healthy comeptitive environment.

Animation I can't comment on enough sadly 'cause I don't know how easy it is to self tech yourself 3D animation or 2D animation.

Paying off 80K in loans is tough let me tell you. And if you don't have a good paying job with the art of your choice, you're gonna have a bad fucking time.

sorry for randomly interjecting lol but as an art student rn i can say while lots if it is possible to accomplish on your own with online tutorials and resources, school is moreso about the connections you can make to make it easier to get into the industry which is usually really tough as a beginner since every studio wants someone with experience. like things like graphic design, portraiture, illustration, etc. animation however is much harder to learn on your own since theres so many learning curves with all the different programs to use, especially 3d modeling and rigging
