You still have a ways to go. This will not be overnight. I had an entire year of perspective. Another thing I would recommend is don't post it on here until you've done way, way more.

You have a general idea of it, but it will take much more to get the real hang of it.

Actually, no I had like two years of perspective classes in a way since I focused on it in my senor year, as well.

There is a strange phenomenon that happens where people post everything they do seeking validation, and you don't want to fall into that trap. 'cause you will end up always second guessing yourself and having no confidence in your own skills, which is a recipe for disaster.

I wish I could get you into a class somehow, 'cause it would be so beneficial to have like-minded individuals to help critique the work you're doing.

Another note. Now that you're learning perspective, try to take paintings like this one by Syd Mead and find where the vanishing points are. You can just copy it on your paper if you like.

You can check Dylan Cole's work too though he's more of a matte painter. Eytan Zana and one of the other artists from Naughty Dog (forget his name) does some pretty solid perspective stuff, as well, though they incorporate 3D (which I highly recommend).

Even the masters had real life models in front of them. Some built maquettes from clay. 3D in art is, in a way, a very old technique. But purists kind of poo poo the thought not realizing how important reference is.

If you're a 3D modeller for games or film and don't care about drawing, you're fine. If you're an illustrator or like to draw stuff and want to incorporate 3D into your workflow, you need to know how to draw what you want to model. It all feeds back into one another, which is hard to explain until you actually do it.

I'm more effective at 3D modeling stuff for my work because I already know how to draw.

And a VERY common trend is for new concept artists to jump right into 3D. it's almost always a disaster.

I do think drawing first strengthens 3D skills for sure but I think it's not great to gatekeep 3D to after you master drawing concepts. Good fundamentals are good but I think people often get stuck in a mastery > creative output loop that leads to little productivity and only practice

Very often i feel like webgen artists are stuck trying to get to an unrealistic skill level before creating stuff

I'm only speaking from first hand experience with years and years of working in professional environments and being friends with many in the industry.

in fact I bought the tutorial of someone who modeled for Horizon Forbidden West but also does Mech concepts in Zbrush. I'd still tell him to learn 2D if he doesn't already.

Fair points, the industry insight is cool to hear. For sure its true that for people pursuing a career in the entertainment industry it's best to follow certain conventions in regards to learning and producing work given the teamwork needed. Just to also be wary that successful and good art can still be made outside that structure and nitpicking creative process is sometimes counterproductive.

It's a really strange balance. What you say is true. You absolutely can learn 3D and then 2D. That seems to be the case for 3D modelers (especially on the character/creature/mech modeling side of things). My personal experience comes from seeing young people who want to be concept artist dive right into 3D and photobashing but have the works come out super mediocre because they lack the foundational knowledge that comes from studying 2D. And yeah, you don't need to master 2D, but having the basics down goes a long way and can actually improve your modeling (and vice versa possibly). Nowdays, I tend to recommmend new concept artists to focus on their 2D foundations and pick up Blender on the side to play around with, but to make sure the foundation stuff takes priority. But they will still have 3D in the back of their mind so they don't have to worry about learning the software (which can be ovewhelming) at a later date. For anyone outside concept art, I just tell them to focus on the foundations and worry about 3D later, since illustrations benefit so much from the foundations and it's harder to cheat stuff with photos and 3D (as is the case with concept art).
