Yeah I’m thinking back on Marc Brunet’s advice of not biting off more than you can chew. I’m not used to doing perspective pieces, or scenery, or multiple people interacting. So instead I tried looking for something much more simple

Here's is a small piece of advice I've relied on for years when I'm stuck on composition ideas. Work with abstract shapes i.e. scribble all kinds of shapes within a frame that is quite small and let your mind discover ideas from the mess. And I mean frames so small it all fits on a single page. These are more refined sketches, but you would start with big blobs, small, blobs, medium blobs, whatever shapes you want with your brush and just scribble around until I idea appears before you.

mine usually end up like this, but they start from something even more rough and abstract until I get what I like

And I mean go fucking nuts. Get all Jackson Pollock with your shapes.
