The point I'm making is that if he and Smoker WERE evenly matched and both had Haki, we still wouldn't have seen it. Ace accurately gauged his opponent's strength and opted not to go in on the fight because there was no reason to.

Saying Smoker doesn't need his jitte if he has haki is similarly weird. Haki still expends energy. If he doesn't need to use Haki for some bum East Blue pirate why would he bother? i hate haki for 2 reasons

1. it's completely undynamic. 2 people with armament fighting is no different to 2 people without it. it fundamentally changes nothing but giving the user basic stat boosts. and advanced is only a little better. observation haki is dynamic but at the same time barely sees any real usage. and conquerors haki in basic form does nothing against an opponent of equal power and in advanced form it's just advanced armament but stronger

2. it's too damn powerful. any top tier must be equipped with the highest level haki or else they are weak as hell. further more with the introduction of imu regen being countered by "moar acoc hehe" it just hammers home the fact that haki is so deeply ingrained in everything. nowadays it feels like too many fights are just haki clash after haki clash after haki clash

Oh yeah, I mean that is 100% what happened. Oda does this a lot. Nika is the same. Oda had no idea how long the series would be going on for, and so he's become a master of introducing new concepts that fit into what is already existing in the story in such a way that audiences generally dont notice. Haki does feel like though it does remove a lot of the fun of the early one piece fights, which is that it was luffys ingenuity and battle IQ that allowed him to counter a lot of these villains. Haki basically is a one size fits all solution which makes fights wayyyy more shallow imo
