Then it will automatically be more metroidvania esque
I guess another word for it could be "DoomSlave" like the console version of PowerSlave
snapmap is so based
chad
Would have just been Battlemode but with campaign maps. No thanks.
Scrapping it destroys what is fundamentally doom
I'm miffed that COVID threw a wrench in plans for modding tools for Eternal too
IIRC they said that was possible in an early interview due to id Tech 7 ditching MegaTextures
I’m really hoping that the next doom game will have at least proper mapping tools
And I don’t mean snap map, I mean a true level editor, that lets people make things in line with the base game
starting to think up ideas for my Doom MetroidVania idea, still titled "DoomSlave"
there wouldn't be weapon mods, but instead permanent weapon upgrades
the chainsaw would act as one to the fists because it was pretty much that in vanilla anyway, the only way you could select the fists again while having the chainsaw is if you got a berserk pack
the shotgun would get semi auto, the SSG would get the aforementioned third barrel
yay my favourite type of upgrade
you just do 50% more damage/you shoot a bit faster
i hate how like 60% of upgrades are usually just extremely boring
stuff like double jumping, dashing, and the equipment launcher would be items scattered around the world
like PowerSlave's player upgrade items and MetroidVanias in general
snapmap is underrated. when it launched it was just modules but now with snaphak you can make insane shit
bro that’s a banger idea you should make it in snapmap
What is snaphak
a tool that removes snapmap limits
basically, it lets you make your own fully custom maps without modules. it also lets you make custom demons and custom mechanics / weapons
it turns snapmap into essentially a full game engine that still works on console and requires very little programming knowledge. someone i know used it to make no mans sky in snapmap, which really shows how insane its capabilities are
Modded SnapMap allowing for more features using vanilla assets.
Ooh
nah, I'd rather do it in GZDoom
more flexible, even if SnapHak is installed for 2016
GZDoom already supports going across multiple maps in a non-linear fashion because Hexen did it first
unlike Hexen tho, my idea is way less obtuse
ok, maybe to ease up on the upgrades idea
the SSG would straight up be an upgrade for the regular shotgun, but it wouldn't function exactly like the regular SSG as a result
the alt fire would be firing each barrel separately, or maybe that could be the primary fire and have both barrels be the alt fire like Blood's sawed-off
would you like some French fries with the heaping mounds of sodium you spew into my face every time I post something
anyways I'd probably implement some kind of build-a-weapon thing like Heavy Barrel or SiN
as in one of the superweapons (if there's multiple) is collected in fragments
my question then is it is possible using it to modify D16 functions as to work like editing script files in D3? at what level can ppl modify things in D16 then, I suppose not lvl 0
idk what that means, but snapmap is infinitely better than anything ive seen in doom 3
I mean in D3 you had scripts available, which is the Quake C code of the game
I was able to create functions inside these files ie using random generator I modified the AI of the game with my own created functions -random health, random behavior, make demons teleport in game at variable times to increase the replayability value of the game, etc
I could even implement american poker the slot machine game inside the game and throw it to a simple wall UI console ie
from what I seen till now in regard to D16 smth like this is nothing or the sort possible with snapmap but I am not versed enough just working with D16 for a few weeks this is why I was asking
hou can do stuff like that in snapmap
with snaphak, and very limited programming knowledge ive seen way crazier stuff
and it works on console too
very interesting. where can I find some links to these things or are there any yt videos about it? (to me if a game don't give me access to use the very basic IF REPEAT AND OR > or < declarations which are common in C languages, then it seems that it just fools me into believing that I can do everything in that game. I suspect that recent years have seen a dramatic increase in objects oriented tasks, which is not my favourite way of doing things, unless I have access also to lower level data
ill dm you an invite to the snapmap discord, ask telesnow or terratela for some info
it would be nice, thank you 🙂
kinda like the unmayker, that's cool
This time the Unmaker would actually be viable too
well yeah otherwise it would just be another disappointment
Man made my favorite 64 weapon do do
and here I'd make it more like how it's described in the Doom Bible
uses souls taken from the zombie enemies as ammo, most effective on pure demons
Love it
not necessarily. if you have game balance in mind all the time, like think in real terms: would you aim and shoot better with 2 pistols: I guess not, unless you would aim one thing with both pistols. you can increase fire spread or use two different point targets (I hate to say crosshairs bc I prefer playing without them), there are ways to compensate
what I would also like and I never seen is weapons to have that leather belt dunno how english man would call it when shooting from the hip: german soldiers used to shoot their machinegun this way, at least in movies it does look cool
a carrying strap?
carrying strap, yep that was the word thank you 🙂
what I would like is engines (AIs included) to be so advanced so that beyond building the base blocks etc, monsters and weapons and the world (a 100,000 smaller scale or Mars ie) programmers not to have to do anything. The engine itself to carry everything else -AI behavior and physics. Just building the base block or world put inside good quality entities, throw the player at point x and let it be
like a sort of ...advanced sandbox experiment or smth
like ie that old Unreal tournament experiment with physics, destructible walls and having a tornado in the middle of the map was a nice idea -it was designed to show the strength of ageia physix cards at the time, I guess
I feel like having the wretch have some sort of role would be cool like, what if, the wretch this entire time, was doomguy's dead wife? Not sure where to go with this but yeah this is this
permanent upgrades that just basically upgrade DPS are meh as fuck
permanent upgrades at least, since if you could lose the upgrades by fucking up then that'd be cooler
or at least don't let player carry 8 weapons -when is the last time you seen a marine carrying 4 machineguns on his shoulder and only let him use different upgrades on the same weapon if he grabs a new one (after he dropped the one with the upgrade)
So pretty much an engine that has everything you could ever need prebuilt into that? Not only would that make programming as a job redundant for a large portion of game devs. Someone would still need to build the thing and update every so often.
I mean the engine would still need to be updated regularly as most likely new ways to improve it would be thought up regularly. AI isn't advanced enough yet it could build and entire game engine and everything inside of it on its own without the need of any human assistance.
ehh, it's okay if the enemies can chase you out of the arena
tbh he meant it to be an advanced sandbox experiment
ah
basically procedural generation like in roguelikes and minecraft, but to the max
even still "programmers not needing to do anything" is a bit of a stretch for current technology
Procedural generation works though yeah
also i don't get what he's trying to say there
engines so advanced that beyond building the base blocks, monsters, weapons, and the world, programmers don't have to do anything? those exist!
i found one of those on the play store when i was like 8
He kinda makes it sound like engines just come pre built with assets and whatnot. Those still need to be made. Granted there is software out here with default starter assets built in but a games gotta have an identity and using default pre-installed assets isn't really a good idea.
you were limited to 2D games and had set genre presets, but you didn't require any programming
for example, if you made a platformer, you just had to set values for movement speed, hitboxes, and whatnot
you can use assets from other sources and still have your own identity tbh
doom for example used sound effects from what i remember to be a sound effect pack
but trimmed stuff out and messed with the pitch
true but that was a different era then today.
just don't use the preinstalled assets
because everybody using that engine will also use those assets at some point
if you pull some textures or audio from random sources people don't know about, it'll basically just be cool easter eggs or something
wonder how id didn't get hit with a copyright case for using Metallica and other bands riffs for Classic Dooms soundtrack
iirc bobby prince was a lawyer who knew exactly how much he was allowed to use without copyright strikes
and then the PS1 port changed everything so the dev team wouldn't have to pay him royalties
think more like in terms of simulation like we see with scientific studies of physics laws instead the standard way of building a game engine (which is usually built with having players interaction in mind and thus affords the liberty to use all kind of "fake" elements, take scripted animations for instance or poor physical properties) -based on physical laws implemented this is what I meant; combined with neuronal AI or smth more advanced that will appear in the future; this way programmers will not need to write "fake" values of individual scripts at every step for entities events and so on just drop in entities like monsters objects and so on
that isn't that advanced lmao
would be cool to mess around with, but it doesn't even require machine learning
simulations for classical mechanics already exist and are fairly plentiful, albeit usually in 2D
i don't think a transition to 3D would be incredibly difficult considering the state of 3D games
what on earth do you mean by fake values
physics systems that don't adhere to real laws?
yes I mean they all adhere to simulation, of course but the level is rudimentary just enough for the player to give the visual information. but it does not need to be that extreme like to be with rigorous physics laws like you see to a laboratory but somewhere in the middle. like I been talking abt Quake Champions -don't copy abilities what you see in other games but use properties instead - if implemented correctly as an example then bullets would not have such impact on metallic robot character in the game -Clutch is his name -but only if you use weapons who deliver proper projectile properties
building ie a player model with physical properties in games I guess is yet far away from any level of scientific body simulation in terms of joints manipulation, bodyweight calculation and so on: this is why games use so often animations -plus minus minimal ragdoll effects
let me use the robot example again: usually a game code is using mnemonics smth like this _ robot_Clutch dmg_bullet_received_scale 0.7 -from bullet_dmg_value <x>; in a scientific way this declaration would miss entirely bc the engine would base the conclusions on properties declared at the basic level bullet_material obj= material_steel<specific steel> or other and this having values like density elasticity etc and Clutch same -material -metal SC xvalue -SC steel carbon or whatever material. the force of penetration would be based on rotation acceleration, distance, shape of the bullet and the surface it hits and so on: which is waaay too far in terms of detail as well as serious math from how code in games calculate
in such an instance to declare any value for dmg of the bullet (directly addressed) would be incorrect bc it might interfere with the laws implemented in the base engine
There are physics based engines out there. Half-Life 2 is one of the best examples. Despite all of the Source engines little quirks HL2’s physics engine was praised when the game released and it’s still damn good now.
Half-Life Alyx shows off an even more advanced physics engine that Source 2 provides which is in VR which makes it even better.
ahhh that's what you mean
it's certainly possible but that's a lot of calculations
you're just asking for hyperrealistic detail, no?
what would you guys think of a quad barrel shotgun
It's neat in prodeus
in a sense yes but does not have to be necessarily exact science. but the base to be there. after building the world everything else would be much easiers for devs as well, since they would just create any object declare its properties/affinity throw it inside the world and that would be all
would still be a hell of a task but they have millions to spend don't they ? :)))
combined with quad damage? you want to kill Zeus in one shot?
It’ll probably happen whenever E3 does or whatever major game convention is if E3 doesn’t happen this year
There is a thing in June. Not sure exact date
QC likely this august, so I expect a tease then a trailer
Trailer at QC that is
It will be quake or doom … or something in between
My guess is quake
yea, prob quake 1 remake wanna be
but with all platforms support (common denominator) bc marketing strategies
I doubt though that they will enjoy the same success like they had with doom newer variants
Naw probably a Quake 1 reboot. Game doesn’t need a remake and it got a remaster last year anyway sooooo
Well there been hints about "lovecraftian hell" so maybe Quake 1 becomes part of Dooms lore in some way. Could be a side story.
quake 1 reboot would be cool. i think it’d be stupid if it went with doom
i fucking hate when media tries to pull a disney and turn into some sorta shitty crossover world
if we have the same people who make d2016 and de working on quake we’re in for a good time
most of Id games have already had cross overs. Esp wolf quake and Doom
so Disney pulled a id
I think he means soft reboot like 2016
hey i was bored and made a concept for doom sequel weapons
its kinda stolen from classic doom mods but here ya go
/d/1-q05Ay8MQ-AcGc1bYKe6Nh-ebRbfRCbAns-QhD7DMvI/edit
just put it in a google doc link
Quake 1 has such little lore already a wouldn’t matter if it was a reboot or a soft reboot
most of the lore is told through environmental story telling.
and it is suggested that Q1 takes place after the strogg war
thing is that that's still how it works with quite a few engines
drop in terrain or enemies and declare their properties
what's wrong with all platforms being supported??
don't you want more people to play the game lmao
I only want newgen to be supported
PC players have been battling that for years. Now console players get a taste of it with comp from lesser consoles
pretty soon, everything will have to compete with phones
given the fact that with the exception of a selective group of deathmatch hardcore players who liked it to death and back, q1 did not enjoy the same massive success that doom enjoyed, the devs cannot put their expectations on quake players base like they would put when they addresses a DooM name, they will probably need to appeal to recently formed playerbase with D16 and Eternal, and thus they will probably push quake games even more toward D16-eternal gameplay style. If this will happen I expect the line between quake and doom games to dilute even more and gameplay to be more and more a mix of god knows what borrowed from other fps games
nah, I'm sure there's a niche but ever-growing community centered around Quake 1's singleplayer and the remaster in 2021 definitely accelerated its growth
but anyways yeah Eternal itself is already pretty Quake-like
well officialy, D16 was a skater in a skatepark, Doom Eternal was a Ferrari. Next game will be a Monster Truck.
you do understand people are getting way back into fast-paced shooters right
still not enough to achieve those massive selling numbers that the devs need for their massive budgets
and personally if there's ever another Doom game I'd like it to edge a bit closer to classic Doom proper in gameplay
D16/eternal already plays like quake
You don't need to make quake more doomlike as they already made doom quakelike lol
Modding support will be greatly beneficial. Map making even more so
but they added upgrades second fire mode to DooM and abilities to quake. older titles were nothing of the sort.
ultrakill is literally devil may cry x quake, and that was received incredibly well
abilities in QC were to pull in new players
None of those things are doom things and more just evolutions of the genre itself
in my opinion if a game is well designed around AI and weapons and everything else then it does not need to import a ton of other variety things from other games
A new quake will also be on gamepass day1 btw so
have you ever considered that other mechanics may be fun
If a mechanic works why not have it
Problem arrives if a mechanic is bothersome or just unnecessary
Like sprinting in newdoom would be
Or how they cut away crouching because it was useless
probably but if you want to know if the base is good try enjoying the game without these additions -if you cannot then it is inferior to the older ones which were great without these additions
lmao but what if they were designed around these
Ok sooo newdoom sucks because you have to jump and dash which og doom didnt have..... right
has to jump to reach an edge to progress
"Holy shit this game sucks i never had to do this in og doom"
by the way they build the game you can see that they first added upgrades and then in order to compensate the strength of upgrades they decided to dramatically increase the nr of enemies through the best way possible who would also cater to consoles -hence here they come 1,000 spawning scripts of monsters and voila
1000 monsters is awesome
have you never played a classic doom slaughter map
high enemy counts is one of its strengths
nuts.WAD says hi
okuplok is worse
like 25k enemies
wait how many did nuts have
is awesome but not if you just throw them all of a suddent inside closed arenas with nothing else in mind then to emulate deathmatch -you can see from the e3 that they designed first something more ellaborate and then dumbed it down
i don't get what your problem with consoles is
they reduce maps reduce AI code reduce everything even loading screens for it reduce nr of enemies who load and make short areas and so on
so your complaint is enemy positioning?
Lol hugo literally admited that he played in an innefficient way during e3 to make it seem cooler then that it was because they hadn't yet figured it out
gameplay is just bad and childish -is not what I complain is the fatc
And i mean... well yeah ofc the game is designed around you playing the game
Ai usually can easily fit
if it seemed cooller than this should be the way -gameplay to be cooller but exploration and other aspects as well. the way they made recent games they are all catering to narcisistic pleasure of mouse torturers
It's graphics that take the hit
yeah
AI is good I see but is not exploited enough -it can be seen that they rushed the production
as if classic doom's AI is any more complex
classic doom is 1000 years older but AI can just so long help
Quickswapping isnt really what ID planned for untill tag1
what
"can just so long help"?
Playing the game without that and just swapping sometimes is what they planned for in basegame
it would be kind of like complaining that people run diagonally in classic doom
Hell it's how I played even coming from 2016
i think doom eternal is mid. the campaign was amazing but everything else- battlemode, and horde mode was trash and they removed snapmap and dont have mod support which is horrible
however i htink the campaign and the base gameplay is great
mod support is so needed next game, if they dont do it than id failed us.
Fucking shame they killed snapmap
the ONLY reason doom 1 and 2 stayed alive is because mods. taking mods away is taking a huge part of doom away
Definitely agree
if doom eternal had decent multiplayer, snapmap and mod support it'd be goated
They never removed snapmap
battlemode was great, BUT the campaign never prepared the players for it. Slayer played very differently in each mode
its not in doom eternal
It was just never added in
No multiplayer needed
SnapMap had potential but it was held hostage by console power.
Only mp it needs is sharing created levels and gameplay features like new demons
they should of kept updating it for PC players
Snapmap still has a strong base. Just needed more
doom is the game that invented deathmatch. i don't think it's as important as the campaign or mod support but its still a thing and it was garbage. and it doesnt have sharing created levels and gameplay features either unless you count shitty fanmade master levels or demon reskins
and horde mod failed the moment they removed randomization. Should of also used the BM maps as arenas
i'm planning on making a youtube video showing off crazy stuff people make in snapmap to make the community stronger, once the next game is announced. it probably wont do that much cause i dont have any subscribers but it'll be something at least
D16 Deathmatch failed because the developers of it refused to listen to all the alpha feedback.
i dont think d16 multiplayer was that good either but its better than battlemode imo
like having laod outs and very overpowerd power ups
when I play quake deathmatch I base my movement aim and so on my my 30 years experience hence I played competitively used to train with purri -a well known q2 and 3 player -but when I play SP I want a very different experience, I don't understand how some ppl can not get sick of asking for the same gameplay when they play SP games ; ie I cripple myself by using controller when I play SP bc I do not want to grab the mouse and kb for another deathmatch match ; I really don't understand how some people cannot become sick of playing the same thing with different clothes -it is like these recent DooM games just use thee xcuse of being SP games just to serve the same food that we have in MP
You have to start somewhere
snap map should of let users edit monsters like weapons and players skins from MP. They should of also increased the player limit to 16 AND let us edit the MP maps
it does. use snaphak
There's a whole server for mods and snapmap. Highly recommend joining
snaphak makes snapmap basically a wholeass game engine. some guy i know made an infinite map spaceship flight sim with ship combat with snapmap, with no mods and working on console. it also has custom demons and drones that fly around and npcs with dialogue
where is its websit?
People in general did neat things. Even played a map where you escort a mancubus
want me to dm you the snapmap discord?
I mean he was also mentioned on doom mods yea he is doing nice things
did you see the map where you fight pizza demons in a food dimension and everything is made out of pizza lol
yes
Not yet but I'm sold hahah
call me when the modders can fix the terrible sound mixing in 2016 /s
Doom also invented those rotating sprites iirc so therefore every doomgane needs them
Ok idk if i interpretend this correctly but if you're talking about that sp and mp gameplay should be different then i heavily disagree
Sp and mp should be extremely close to eachother, one with players the other without
Because if your game is essentionally 1 multiplayer game and 1 singleplayer game, why not just have 2 different games?
dunno too expensive I guess especially the DM experience - from what I've heard QuakeChampions has been a flop ie
It'll be on gamepass now anyways and you can just get what you want
QuakeChampions? I been playing it from the beginning on steam.
but ppl say that the concurrent player numbers dropped dramatically for the last two years or so I haven't checked
ie I have been following a bit the controversy around that journalist, takahashi. what I seen in that SP so-called failed play was a guy not very skilled and who did not lose 10.000 hours on specializing himself on the mechanics of the game (Doom Eternal was the scandal about) but who struggled to get things done in his playthrough. to me it was more interesting to follow seeying someone not very accustomed struggling with a SP campaign. it was interesting despite his lack of skill. this is the pb with SP games that we get fooled to get in love too much with the knowledge that we have with game mechanics to the detrimental that we become blind to everything else in a SP experience.
Ok i have no idea why you're ramblinh about this but that guy's problems with his gamesense was that he actually couldn't do the most basic of game/shooter things
Mp/sp asside, even if you only play mp cod it should've gone easier
Or more like his basic sense of ANYTHING was off, he couldn't find the way forward despite staring at it
And he gets paid to do these things PROFESSIONALLY
I guess he missed a jump not seeying that he could jump over the chains
he couldn’t even aim for body shots, not just missing jumps. he was acting and playing like he’a never touched a controller before and frequently missing obvious things any gamer would know
like he never touched a controller before? you are clearly exaggerating . but anyway the guy does not have backbone if he criticized the game and early retracted
not, watch the video of his gameplay lol
Quake 1 has no connection to Quake 2 and 4. Quake 2 that started the whole Strogg storyline wasn't even supposed to be called Quake 2 in the first place they just put the Quake name on there cause why not
It's all mostly fan theories. Q1 is easily the most bare bones major FPS title id Software has put out in terms of storytelling and narrative
Still lot to work with when it comes to those bones considering the source material
i think its not fair that some people want to enjoy a mp experience of a game they enjoy and not be compensated in some way
especially when it was somewhat there in some way in past doom games. Doom 3 had a deathmatch
Hell even Half-life as much as it had still also had a niche fanbase for the Deathmatch even tho the 2 mp games the majority of Valve fans revolve around is Team Fortress and CS
also Snapmap could never return
Certain Affinity worked on the Multiplayer aspects including Snapmap
And they went off to make the Snapmap they were most passionate about. The Halo Infinite Forge
If ur wondering what snapmap could have been. THAT forge mode was a piece of what Snapmap could be
id Software is perfectly capable of making a map maker that can equal and or surpass Snapmap
Just cause Certain Affinity isn’t working with them anymore means nothing
People didnt exactly really like battlemode 🤷♀️
And a deathmatch style eternal would be too chaotic considering you will be able go meathook players whilst they are meathooking and everything
With crazy mobility and not that great models
They dont have copyright on a creator type space iirc
Yeah and i feel sorry for the farm simulater fans who can't do that on eternal, a shame it didnt cater towards farming simulaters
I would believe that but i can’t trust that it could be a good evolution of it sense i dont know abt Id’s past experience making a map editor ig. Id imagine the best way to compromise it is do what Bethesda does with their games and give an official full mod support fans can share and play
especially when they made the decision to not have it with Eternal nor an actual deathmatch cause id assume its a mix of Lack of Direction and time for it. Certain Affinity was made up of old. Bungie devs from the Halo 3 days, the people who worked on halo’s map editor so they have a legacy they can still achieve well. These are the guys that have an understanding for social gaming
Not really what i mean
That is called trying to “Appeal” to a broader audience which adding a deathmatch to Doom isn’t what it means
Doom has thrived on community made content since the first game.
id Software should have no problem making a level maker
alright
Im just stating id didnt make snapmap and thats why its not in Eternal.* so ye
The perfect snapmap adding so much veriety to build or even make actual gameplay experiences is awesome
Hell it be cool if the list of weapons also had legacy doom weapons that work exactly how they do in their classic games
Even though I don’t use it I thought the classic doom sounds available in Eternal where kinda cool
A snapmap combining everything like doom 3 demons with the pixel sprites of Doom 1-2 and 64
Having some of the Doom 3 demons return would be cool. Some of them had cool designs
I once thought of bringing back the Wraith but it'd basically just be a watered down Prowler
on another note, the Bruiser would basically be a cross between the current Hell Knight and the Mancubus
also I like the teeth monitor
they should bring back 3's commandos to make up for the terrible HWD-wannabes in TAG2
Or make proper modern Chaingunners
chaotic is awesome tbh
that's never a downside, being unbalanced is a downside
meathooking other players while they're also meathooking could open up very interesting strategies
if the time to kill and balancing is refined i dont see why a mp with Eternal’s arsenal wouldn’t work
Like just making it feel like quake is a +
funny how they went in just a few years from being the pillars of modding community to one of the worst in terms of moding -to quote carmack? when they sold their soul to bethesda -don't worry guys, nothing will change we will only have access to more money or smth right....
The original modding community hasn’t fallen off at all wdym?
They don’t sell mods for money like Fallout 4 does
The Classic Doom community’s modding scene is still thriving
lol doom really isnt one of tyhe worst in pillars of modding
some games can't be modded at all, eternal's modding scheme is still prety lively
with the exception of access to declarations, you cannot do much ; compare it to the access they gave us in the past to functions and classes; that was real mod support. without giving ppl access to functions and classes for editing this is more like fake mod support -you can think you can modify a lot but you can't. this can be seen especially as years pass by by the number of succesful mods available. we are already 7 years later and nexus has how many... 3 pages at all of mods most of them just slightly alterations in the decl files
First time I agree with you. Absolute travesty they got rid of mod support or map creation. Fucking shame
Yah Wraith = Prowler now
watching now Doom Eternal dansgaming walkthrough. it would have been such a cool idea if you could press a button and have the helmet activated, with all the codex info and menu written inside it lets say sideways
like some reviewer wrote, it breaks the immersion with these tutorials -you could skip them when you play but not when you watch someone else streaming lol
i dont think doom imo was ever a “highly-immersive”
also this isnt any different to opening a menu and just reading it
they still tried it with doom vfr didn't they?
skip it anyway watching a D2016 or Eternal stream walkthrough is boring a f after first half an hour -too repetitive and fast paced action would put the watcher even more off -and I seen thousands of competitive quake demos since this is the best way to get gud -in conjunction with playing of course
thing is doom vfr id say is far from even be an immersed expeirence and tryna just be a vr shooter
and woah its almost like the point of Modern doom’s gameplay is fast paced
You cant just have the player be expected to run around like a demon but be stuck cause Expository appeared on their screen
Why tutorials can suck but then again they serve a purpose
This game isnt “shoot till they die” cause ur own time to die is short
I wonder if my "Doom 3 spiritual successor" idea could be mixed with something System Shock or Prey 2017-esque
but that'd probably stray too far from Doom
if it stays in the Doom universe why not
so at this point I've got three different proposals for a Doom game
Doom: ODST, DoomSlave, and Doomshock
those are all tentative names because they basically describe the general directions for each
I guess in the beginning DooM was the driving force in terms of gameplay but after a while the devs also borrowed elements from other games, like let's try a bit of more realistic approach with D3, let's go back to the roots but implement upgradeable stuff and secondary fire modes D16 and runes but try to keep a bit of realistic approach (the way you pick up keys, ie and so on) and DEternal let's push it a bit more toward multiplayer experience and back to the roots but still keep in newer additions but modify some of them
at this point one have to ask what is it that makes DooM unique and stay close to that, and then from there expand if you can
the way the Doom Bible described things it gave me vague System Shock vibes even tho it was like two years before
Aw hell naw what is a doom slave
You said the names described the general directions how is the game gon be focused on slaves I'm legit confused and flabbergasted
the name "PowerSlave" doesn't really have any specific relevance in the actual game
it's probably just an Iron Maiden reference since it takes place in Egypt
the European release was called Exhumed, the remaster is called PowerSlave Exhumed
thank God is nothing of the sort of ancient history 😄
and just for good measure the Japanese release was called 1999 AD: Resurrection of the Pharaoh
Honestly, all this lore shit has me dead
only the Doom: ODST idea is concretely set in the modern world, either before or during Eternal
2016 and Eternal basically encapsulated "Romero's vision" for the classic games
for what comes next I want it to encapsulate "Hall's vision"
again, kinda like what 3 did, but better
Probably won't happed anytime soon. Since the latest releases were successful from financial perspective I expect the devs to build something similar, with improved graphics -although graphics would come to a point that you could not be able to point which engine is which -and same similar gameplay mechanics -meaning right inside players mouth tutorials -use chainsaw to kill enemies, go here kill one then second then thirds -dhaaaa.... -and fast speed action or even faster. And the universe will be more closely related to quake. Some of the textures and level assets they build for Eternal will be found there. Like they obviously used some parts of maps of urban areas from (cancelled) Doom4 in DEternal -and dropping ammo and health visuals appeared in Rage 2 already. they called it... don't recall
hugo said they will try doing something else
but that was wayyyyy early on, more then a year back from now
it would be interesting but I am afraid that the finance department won't let them depart too far from the "working" script
Microsoft bankrolls them
Doom is a game that sells on name alone
The most we have to fear about a new ID game is that they will have too many extra transactions
things have come to a point that we would be happy only NOT to have some things in it -how about complaining about other things :)))
here's a risky experiment that would probably end in disaster: have other Microsoft-owned studios tackle Doom
I mean, it's ID
Their next game will likely be great
Second biggest fair is that i personally wont like it
I mentioned the Doomshock concept earlier, maybe Arkane could do something like that
the idea of adding loot boxes to quake champions was a bad idea imo. better spend that time to build stronger AI. computer is weak af even on nightmare
inspired by system shock games?
yeah
and Prey 2017, which Arkane developed, is an immersive sim like System Shock
I think the devs even threw around the name "Neuroshock" for it for a while
although I am a fan of slow paced actions in regard to SP experience I am afraid that it would be way too slow
oh, it wouldn't just be System Shock or Prey with demons
I wouldnt say arkane's games are too slow paced
and it needs level map designed by geniuses. I tried ss2 demo this new one and is boring bc the repetitiveness and bleak maps
at first is nice but after a few hours is gets dunno I stopped midplay
like it should feel "arcadey" like Doom usually is, but "immersive" enough for the System Shock influence to shine through
it needes specific things to have in mind. this general idea is too vague and if they go just by that they risk creating a disaster
I say just pick what you already have and make incremental adjustments -but in the right direction -toward what you say
from a technical point of view I am not sure that renouncing to megatextures was a good move
UE 5 added it and Id dropped it like LOL wtf
What is the difference and is that what eternal used or?
D16 only used it -it was the thing that Carmack would make much noise abt it -the interesting thing abt it was it would permit you as creator not to use repetitive textures
which made environments more unique and interesting -IF applied correctly. the complain was abt texture rendering on slower machines but with modern hw it is not a pb anymore
Eternal used texture streaming instead of MegaTextures
I suspect that they dropped it bc it would put additional stress on consoles -and phones -I am sarcastic here
also MegaTextures are a literal antithesis to modding
Huh?
How could it make environments more unique?
well they did not bother with mods anyway
imagine you paint a whole painting or make a painting from small squares which would repeat themselves
Wouldnt it still be more efficient to have more textures in general with more rotations rather then have 1 big, clunky texture
but from what I have seen when they used megatextures at least in rage they got lazy and did not bother to work on details too much especially terrain did not look well
being clunky can be improved I guess this is why engines evolve. what I understood is that they renounced to it mostly bc the consoles problem -but maybe I did not understand the points made by ppl
I would still imagine a bunch of textures would be easier to use then 1 big one which just has them all though
yes but the problem is that devs tend to much to use the same textures which is a detriment to general visuals, after you play a while. per se normal textures usage is not bad but it also make devs get lazy when they build maps -this is not so often with id since they still have great mapers but especially other games suffer from this as
What stops them from just using the same part of the megatexture
Doom 3 and Doom 3 PSVR is the definitive Doom VR experience. It’s also probably the most immersive Doom experience in terms of a story
At least when compared to VFR
I wonder how does occulus work with D3 since they made much noise abut it
what do you mean? it is a single huge texture. they could use parts of it but would defy the purpose
Ok sooooo you could still just make different textures
you could but you won't. most crates in D16 ie all look kinda the same
Hm? You need SideQuest and another mod I’m pretty sure. Dunno how exactly to set it up
it does not since it would be difficult to even copy paste a 2560x2560 whatever texture and add it to the megatexture block bc you would struggle to fit it in -and hence it would be easier to just add new ones from imagination - like painting; carmack did not make a great deal about it if it would have been stupid I guess -although he had its commercial potential in mind
a friend of mine did buy the playstation recent vr for his kids; now I only have to enter their room without being noticed and grab it 😄
if I'd be to buy one dunno which, the most interesting would be the one vr from starbreeze bc it has superior fovs to anything on the market as yet -but it costs over 1,000 or 2,000 usd -they only sell them to companies atm
I’m fine with my Quest 2. On the cheaper side and can do wireless and wired PCVR.
I only intend to use vr to look around and play with regular mouse+kb or controller so to me a better fov is more important rather than which vr controller they implement
agreed
good arena FPS AI is badly needed
Aren’t we getting a System Shock remake this year? Quite a few BioShock style stuff in the works
yeah
in March or smth if they did not change release date
they delayed it to May
better delay it rather than to release an unfinished product
could Doom 3 be ported to mobile with today's technology?
There's a pretty fun doom3ish game available
honestly I wonder if current id would be able to make something that's not an FPS
I don't think they will be too interested in that
Neither would I
Maybe like a strategy or smn like mc dungeons
...why?
Is there ever going to be another doom game🥺
Hugo Martin once said:
"We havent made our best doom game yet"
So i would say yes
yay
The best doom already happened in the 90s
next game's SSG should be lever-action like the shotgun in Marathon 2
with the same Terminator 2-esque flip cocking
That's just what I picture the 64 shotgun haha
i feel in the next DOOM game, they should allow you to customize the wrist-blade, similar to the suits in eternal.
Speaking of customisation, if possible, I would love to see more customisation instead of just different skins like maybe you could mix and match "equipment" (idk what to call them)
But this is really just something that would be cool to see and not necessary.
Yeah as a beast prob
mix n match equipment + custom colors
That too
And God knows how right he is. The best as of yet is still Doom2.
Highly subjective. My absolute favorite is DOOM Eternal.
I love the mobility in Eternal with Double-Jump's, Dash and "Yeethook"
In order not to get blinded by the moment compare it to their times. Doom 1 and 2 gained millions of adepts and had such an impact that they would direct the direction of fps genre for years if not decades to come. It created a cult. Doom Eternal barely had any impact on others than a few fanatics in love with what they can do with good movement and aiming. I can still beat most of them at aiming and movement since I played quake competitively for decades but I don't think this is something extremely laudable. Some of them don't even know what strafejump is. They should not get too much in love with their knowledge of the mechanics. Not that DEternal is absolute trash, but like a critic said, Doom Eternal did not even win game award of the year winning only 6% of the votes or smth. Does not look to me like "highly subjective".
Game of the year is trash. Fucking last of us 2 won
TGA is blatantly rigged now
Okay but talking about the actual game not “impact”
@main grotto I've been wanted to say this to you and I think this is important for you to absorb take In. You're in a server where people love doom eternal doom 2016 or classic doom. You're basically just baiting going into these other games outside of classic... you re just hating on them.No one here has once agreed with your non sense rants that are non existent complaints or nit picks. I have no idea what you're trying to accomplish but it's annoying. I don't like a few games ( new God of War compared to old for example) but I do not go into those servers and complain hate or shit on things others enjoy. I don't like it so I move on with my life. I think it's time you do the same and stick to things you like. It's bizzare that you have been doing this for a week straight
It’s pretty dumb yeah
yea lmao
doom eternal is also the best-selling game in the franchise, no?
Idk
Sold half a million copies in it's first year
Imagine being this braindead
☠️
A game doesn’t need to win Game of the Year for it to be good
Would have to be either Eternal or 2016 if I had to guess
we were robbed
Tho i was voting animal crossing
I'm sorry but ain't doom 1 and doom 2 pretty much 30 fucking years old and doom eternal has only been out for 3 years what the fuck is your logic
thrre are many reasons why Eternal didnt get game of the year and its 3 parts
-Public Opinion
-Company management
-Corporation Money money and more money
And Sony was dominaint that year and now
-dumbasses who thought doom eternal was bad cuz it was too hard or were just 2016 fanboys
game of the year doesnt mean shit btw* its just another title rating
Game of the year more like shitty award of the century
game of the year can be from any source like the awards by player vote on steam or from thr actual show itself
fixing my statement. Im not saying game of the year doesnt mean anything.
Its just that dont believe its somethin to have as high regard
Imo it ain't mean like anything at all
Sure it's a nice award to have if you made the game but fucking last of us 2 won over so many other actual good games its not like its the craziest achievement
considering doom eternal doesnt have a soundtrack it couldnt win that award ig..
it won on the Steam awards tho
I do enjoy the last of us. Tho the public opinion on the 2nd game was very controversial i was surprised it beat a few games that had the best installments in the series
Animal crossing, Doom eternal
Half life alyx released
Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Demon’s souls, Star wars squadrons, etc.
There were a lot of great games for a year we hated. I bought a Switch, a new PC, and borrow a VR just to even play all the games that released in the year
kinda the first time i spent so many hours for gaming and Financially spent
also kinda stupid to use the game awards as a source
and just avoid anything like major journalists, independent journalists, Google trends, etc. to measure the relevancy Eternal had
Also Doom eternal/2016 did have an impact in gaming further reviving the genre of “Boomer shooters” that games like Dusk also tried to revive
not many newer games now-days exist to be the leading factor of a Genre
Also @main grotto all you have been doing on this server is shit talking Doom for the last ever sense you got here trying to Red-pill everyones asses with subjects like “Fanboys” or some ridiculous claim like people who are new and discovering this franchise arn’t “Real” Fans
I can acknowledge that you arn’t 100% a braindead critic and that u do give credit for newer doom games of what they did right but its greatly outweighed with the most Nitpick BS ive heard and lack any self-Aware the ** “Them”** you dislike is ultimately what ur doing.
d2016 yes
eternal, not as much
most big names in the retro FPS revival started development before doom eternal
and most new projects i see are either inspired by ultrakill or an existing shooter that isn't eternal
keyword being most
scathe and a few others exist
I dont think Eternal has a large impact in the gaming industry as a whole and it doesnt need to
It has however an impact to the franchise’s longevity
Like this franchise is more alive than my love for Half-life
i cope and seethe…
Like Doom right now is at a point where your 56 year old father and you can finally have a decent relationship just cause u both share a franchise 💀
(not saying everyone has a shitty relation with their dads)
doom is the most important and significant doom game considering it was the first almost-fully 3D fps
I dont really understand why Doom has to “Innovate” the wheel cause its more like what does innovating look like in Modern gaming
also he's talking as if eternal doesn't have a cult around it as well
cause innovating the industry is who ever can pump out MTX and content in a week
U can be glad single players still exist 💀
as if any game doesnt have one.
indie games innovate well at least, though a lot of games just feel like remixes of other games
"few" fanatics my ass
i myself used to be a heavy gatekeep virgin. Not proud of it but ya
thats true
even if they are remixes. Earning an identity is well deserved for attention imo
ultralikes
Games like Stardew Valley or Terraria i play on my own time.
Mighty Doom release time?
i mean smaller, more obscure indie games
u mean like. idk happy wheels lol
ye those boomer shooter indie stuff are pretty cool
Not mine(my whole family doesn't know what the fuck a doom is)
reaver felt like weird ultrakill from the trailer but i have to play it myself
Might be cuz 2016 came before eternal
me and my dad share a love for Mario, Zelda, and kirby
force reboot would be fun if the walking camera animation didn't bug me so much
Yall have some great gaming dads
Unfortunately for me my dad doesn't know shit about games
Philippines is right next to Japan so i guess it makes sense he owned a nintendo console (NES) 🤷♂️
Matter of fact I'm finna be the "dad" to introduce him to games and shit
Well I think he did have a ps1 tho
force reboot is post void x ultrakill, but i feel like it sorta misses post void's sheer tension and ultrakill's open-ended combos
mine owned a famicom
thats actually sick
my dad and my uncles talk about playing on the atari
well yk if u dont have one u can be one in 20 years
crossbow bloodnight was like "devil daggers: again" but i have to replay it
Like when im a Dad i’d def 100% have my kid play Halo: Combat Evolve
2 player splitscreen co-op games are the shit
Fair point
i do need to play some of this stuff when i can
When I'm a dad ill def let my kid try the cup head tutorial to see if theyre smarter than Dean takahashi
lmfao
i have a list
Like ive been making a list of Doom WADs and indie games to try out
about a hundred games but it is not quality-checked in the slightest
I don't exactly have the most knowledge of games rn so I don't have much of a list other than....doom
since it's a quantity-over-quality list
i was a generic cod/halo kid so ur fine
If I manage to have every doom when I'm a dad I will def let my kids play them all
Finna give em nightmares I'm such a good dad
Playing zombies on kino hit diff
when i get into something, i get into it
would anyone even let their kid play fnaf today
be it a genre or a series or anything
Sounds awesome
people still play FNAF?
idk does anyone
Every halloween i play once for my “Spooky gaming” events
Slenderman if anyone remembers that
Not me cuz if I don't like horror games they prob won't either
If I want them to play a "horror game" I would pick doom 3
I remember playing dead space seeing it on a gamestop and didnt know it was horror
Is dead space a horror game?
ye
Didn't know that ig I could let my kids try that too
What's crazy is that we're taking "the-future" to the next level by talking about OUR future
ive asked myself if i’d allow kids to play this violent stuff
I would yes
Lmao id be a hypocrite if i didnt
But it's not just about if it's violent games like doom eternal take some brain and that might help...maybe
Ye i couldnt rlly say games like Doom are rlly violent cause the context of it is very diff
Is cup head a good game for young kids to play?
I couldnt beat the bowser level without my dad when i was like 4
💀actually the amount of times ive asked help from my dad in games as a toddler is hilarious
I never touched a game when I was 4 ☠️
I look up YouTube walkthroughs ☠️
kids these days start fortnite out of the Womb so ur not off
The hell am I not off if they play fortnite out of the womb and I didn't even touch a game when I was 4 that's def very far off
this was like 2010 idk if youtube was even that big enough where i could look up walkthroughs
Fair
hell my family didnt even have an iphone at the time
well iphones were made in 2007
Don't have an iPhone now ☠️
didnt get one till last year bro
Didn't get one in my whole life bro
I dont actually know if kids these days have a load of options for games to remember
like ya… fortnite. ik overused but its def gonna be a huge factor in their lives
its like if u were born
Pre-1990 is a whole lot of Nintendo content.
If u were born post 1990’s
-Grew up on Doom, Half life, quake, early CS.
Post 2000’s was like Call of duty, halo, gears of war, so many mp games
I'm trying to grow up on doom rn
Wdym by load of options
Its more so a lot of games these days are reboots of old franchises rn
Is cod black ops and 2 worth it cuz ngl I would love to play a cod game and they're the cheapest so
Well cod is technically the cheapest but I forgor what it is
Cod4, MW2, mw3, Bo1, bo2, World at war are all very nice games
personally bo1 has a sweetspot for me
especially Zombies. so much fun times
Mw doesn't have zombies right
Hell the Moon map on bo1 was peak for zombies
So in terms of content I should pick BO over mw and mw2?
nope just bo
Sense multiplayer is prob dead and beyond thought. Id say Black ops offers more for the casual single player experience
Crazy how the entire franchise is quite a few hundred dollars
like u can play campaign. And zombies has its own loop of gameplay with horde mode and Finding Lore easter eggs
Campaign nice in terms of gameplay(I don't really care about story at this point)?
It is nice in terms of gameplay
some fun stuff happens especially. Great characters too
Hmm is Bo3 ok
ofc if u are looking for more Special ops unit its prob Modern warfare
for zombies ya. idk if tye mp is alive
the campaign was pretty shite.
How long is the BO campaign?
Nice
If you are into things like Cold war era, CIA conspiracies and such Black ops is basically what that is
Modern Warfare is supposed to be the Realistic grounded but Hollywood action type
Don't really care that much about those kinds of things lmao
Aight thanks for the info
gameplay wise nothins rlly diff. as i said idk what the health of the mp is
ive just heard its overrun by hackers
Oh yeah which campaign is longer mw2 or bo
roughly the same
Should I get half life 2 since its incredibly cheap?
i dont see why not* better than half life 1 if u didnt like the old game design
Don't know anything about half life 1 so idk
What's the game like? Should I get it over BO?
honestly i'd let them go wack with anything that isn't rated strictly adults-only (nsfw or overly gory with humans) but not give them access to the community
doom eternal really isn't that bad when it comes to violence
if you let your kids watch something with monsters being shot down or beaten to death, doom eternal is fine
What are you trying to say? people who are new and discovering this franchise aren't real fans? Are you ok?
I think I understand where this is supposed to go. Censorship? Is this a safe space for newer Doom lovers? You should also try to absorb that I am one of the clients who did buy the game even though I knew that it would not be a great game to my taste. I did buy it just bc moding capabilities. Yet if you buy any product of any kind there is no agreement with the seller that you would not be allowed to criticize the product. Unless you dream about the recently resurrected trend of communist rules in modern society to shut peoples' mouth through censorship and other methods of harassment. I see that ppl already started to build the "hype" about my feelings toward the game so they could justifiable act accordingly. I know that this is a Doom channel but the voice of ppl who does not like the game should also be heard here so and Doom fans should know that not anybody like their arguable good game. If not here, then where? Out in the fields? In a normal society you should just accept the criticism or give your arguments why not. Trying to build a narrative around ppl who criticize the game (like me) in order to act in a communist way in the future is a sign of weakness.
You're an idiot and I'm not ready a single long winded bs sentence coming from your mouth again. Fuck right off
The fact that I constantly criticiezd the game should not even be mentioned
Ah here he comes. The good smart guy starting to throw direct insults. I supposed I am still the bad one. Go on I won't feel offended.
Stfu bru
That just sounds like blatant baiting
...to act in a communist way...
What have you been smoking all day?! o.0
And buddy if you shittalk about a game, thousands of people here love, expect some backlash.
If you don't like it. Feel free to leave.
the points people are trying to make are that you didn't give proper criticisms of the game
your rant about doom 2 being better was:
-classic doom had more impact
-classic doom pulled in more players
-doom eternal didn't win GOTY
you haven't brought anything up about the actual gameplay other than:
-older games were better because they managed to create fun, high-octane gameplay with much less mechanics
-people are only having fun with eternal because they found out about the things you can do with aim and movement
if i'm going to talk about those points:
-i much prefer more focused, simple gameplay like classic doom, most older shooters, and devil daggers, etc., that make the most of few mechanics, but more complex systems like ultrakill are fun too
-aim and movement are the basis of mechanical skill in nearly every FPS game out there, i literally try out games just to see what they've done with the movement system because people always come up with new, interesting systems to implement into games
You can criticize the game. Just you can’t expect people to not disagree with you and criticize your criticisms
and then immediately go on the defensive when someone shares a differing point of view
tbh i get where they're coming from
like, with the "censorship?" "safe space for newer doom lovers?" statements
since like, everybody dogpiled on him and he assumes it's because he dislikes doom eternal and not because he didn't criticize the actual game
There's reasons to dislike a game but everything he's said has no legs in reality
yeah
And like I said before. Don't like it ? Why are you wasting your life talking about it just to start a fight and nothing constructive to say? It's not a safe space thing it's you're a troll trying to bait everyone thing
i always seek out differing opinions for more perspective, but only when you actually gain something from reading said opinions
And as someone who used to teach.. when you have criticisms be concise and coherent. There's no reason to type 3 paragraphs of random non sense unless you know you have nothing constructive to say. More words does not mean you know what you're saying and in fact burries whatever point you're trying to make in a Mish mash of blabbering nothingness
agree heavily
too much people on discord (social media in general) have paragraphs that are like 90% filler with no structure either
Ya and you're just combing through there trying to salvage anything that makes sense
true lmao
i hope the next 30 doom games are exactly like these two just to annoy those people
It will be. They won't change a fantastic format just for a room full of weirdos
I’d love for the next Doom to play with giving the slayer more momentum. Like imagine if running into a zombie or imp at full speed launched them back, or if the player could channel Johnny Nickelson and plow right through some walls in the arena
i wanted to code a mod where you could crash through walls and enemies just with sheer speed
I’d also like to see a return of really fast base movement instead of using dashes and such
same
The dash system always felt like a much less elegant way to achieve the same general goal
At least it wasn’t triggered by double tapping one of the regular movement keys
I hate when games do that because it’s so easy to trigger it on accident
Man rlly brought up communism in an arguement
i hate that with a passion
i would prefer clenching my ass to trigger a dash than double tapping the movement keys
i agree mainly cause the dash doesnt “Push u” in momentum it more so feels like a string is attached to u.
Ultrakill’s Slide hopping feels more fluid and free compared to its Dash too.
just let me fuckin bhop in doom
dash is meant to dodge things that are coming at you too fast to be dodged with other means
Ooh, a slide mechanic would be fun
i think a dash that does better is halo 5 guardians
Like Ultrakill and Turbo Overkill
if u seen its “Thrust” mechanics its fluid and nice
when someone says "slide" i think of quake 4 and titanfall 2 lmao
When u dash the momentum pushes you with it rather than just appear in area 1 to area 2
which is how i feel abt doom. Strings attatched
opinions on like
UT-style dodging
it's basically a lunge, since you have some vertical momentum as well
Wow, just skimmed the guy above’s censorship rant, and just wow. Accusing a corporation (and a capitalist society) of “communist rules” for taking issue with wild tirades against the game’s developers. That’s painfully American.
"painfully american" is now one of my favorite phrases
lmfao
i don't get what that means
When u do an Ultrakill Jump + slide u launch urself. Its the same thing here in Halo 5
well its actually a movement tech. Basically he dashed up a ramp
was thinking about ultrakill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtPuFw6SFgk This video might help for understanding if u wanna watch
Distances travelled using slide, thrust, & some of
their combinations.

unreal tournament gets the vertical distance just right
a cool franchise. i heard it got servers plugged out?
pretty much 😔
damn. Would have def tried it out.
kinda a weird assumption but ive heard about the UNREAL editor so maybe some lucky folks will make UT in fortnite 😅
ive heard its a full Game Engine interface using Fortnite assets and the Unreal engine itself
anyway, back to dashes
i wake up with a nice sleep to read communism so a great day
U mean like Movement Mechanics vs Actual Raw movement
doom eternal has agility (dash n shit) but low movement speed
quake 3 arena has low agility but you go craazy fast
not necessarily
Games like Apex and Titanfall i see as a mix with Movement mechanics like Sliding, Wall hopping/run, tap-strafes, etc.
then you have shit that has both
quake 1 and CPMA with their easy turns
dusk with its sheer air control
ultrakill has agility first but because of slide jumps and dash jumps, you have raw speed too
not really about the complexity of the mechanics
again, dusk has high agility with incredibly simple movement
ik what u mean
i can't run titanfall nor have i played apex properly
R u saying like Agility = Movement Features
Raw movement = Base movement + movement techs
raw speed is how fast you can get
agility is how easily you can change directions or navigate tightly
Games like Titanfall u need to use the Wall run or Slides in order to move at the pace ur expected to. But base movement isnt possible unlike quake
ah. I thought we were talkin abt how Movement shooters fall in either
Many Movement features vs Base movement + movement techs
cause i prefer fast base movement. Things like Slide and stuff are cool its just some games make them rlly cookie cutter
yeah
Like call of duty. Things like Slide and stuff arnt really giving u an advantage
the movement system for the game i'm designing has tight dusk-style air control but with some gimmicks
sounds like a preference of mine
namely sliding, gliding, and triple jumps
it flowed really well in the unity mockup i made
even if it does seem rather complex
triple jumping just sounds a bit useless ngl
but basically the gliding's intended to feel like quake 3 strafejumping but in a straight line
eh, i want the player to be able to go really damn high
A jetpack boost can feel rlly restrictive in the movement so i prefer jumps
just make base jumps higher?
debating on whether or not to add grappling hooks because they're so damn fun but overused at the same time
no because i also want finer control over your vertical position
air control
vertical position
thats more horizontal
eternal had a pretty good spin on it, could have something like that
maybe
something games have done for decades: the longer you hold jump the higher you go
yes but what if i want readjustment on the fly
that's where double jump is for
triple jump works well for the way i'm structuring the combat
otherwise you can excuse infinite jumps
maybe make it so that you need to do something "more" for the extra jumps? like idk wall/enemykicking
you can jump off enemies
if u can grapple an enemy and jump off them that be pretty great
make some fancy flying enemies that you can jump off of
doing that restores your double jump aswell
the triple jump just felt right in the mockup i coded
only issue is making the AI for it and make it go the direction u expect ig
i liked in ultrakill is if u grapple an enemy off the ground. Ur in full control where the enemy goes and how ur movement is cause u can jump off it
honestly i was thinking having the main character be too broke to afford a good grappling hook and has a shitty busted one instead that doesn't retract lmao
basically you end up as spider-man
A flying enemy would just be like Moving Platforms rather than an engaging enemy type
i want to rip off the centipedes from devil daggers
sliding on a centipede would be so damn cool
Imagine if they implemented elements from Mighty into the next mainline, like the acid equipment launcher
Really love acid. It's my go 2
will there be a new main DOOM game after DOOM ETERNAL?
i cant even install might doom it wont let me
Yes
Yeah but don’t expect it anytime soon
The new game id Softwares making probably isn’t Doom
Wdym a new sequel? That would just be a new Doom game
Do you mean reboot?
no like
the story from 2016 keep going
w doom eternal
and that would be cool if it kept going in other future games
I’m guessing we’re in for another huge time skip.
Probably but we could always first have a "filler" game and not 2016 opening p2
I’d love a Doom 64 situation where the demons are revived by an eldritch being (Black Goat of the Woods?) but now they’re all mutated and gross and have a body horror aspect to them
Like imagine pinkies with tentacle mouths where their eyes should be
Demons but worse. I dig it
Since 2016 and eternal are both reboots of doom 1 and 2, the next one could possibly be a reboot of either doom 64 or doom 3
Or they’ll go a completely different route and come up with a new original doom
honestly I want another true reboot next
I feel like the Slayer's story has ended completely with TAG2 and it'd just be pointless in my eyes to continue it somehow
the mere idea of "the next game's protagonist will reawaken the Slayer" just ticks me off quite a bit
while y’all are hoping for a new FPS. When will doom make an RTS
that'd be neat
a third Enemy Territory, following the Wolfenstein and Quake ones
no wait, those are online FPSes
still tho, maybe even taking cues from Skulltag and Zandronum's playerbase (well, the different game modes that is)
Will we probably never return to the Doom 3 universe. The Doom 3 demons returning makes sense though and would be cool but going back to Mars City would be pointless.
I think thats better then a new protagonist for the Doom series at that point just make a new franchise. Plus there are still plot points introduced in TAG 1 that need to be wrapped up.
Doom is definitely Doomguy’s story first and foremost. Retiring him wouldn’t make much sense from a franchise standpoint
Fr fr
Eh I think that allows them to introduce a new human character for us to play while also getting doomguy back which is a double W imo
And hey maybe that new character could team up with doomguy
Plus, they could have the main campaign only be about the human trying to reawaken the slayer, and maybe only the next next game(or dlc) we play as doomguy again
That's kind of a W for both "opinions" imo
I don't want it to revolve around a single dude
in general I don't like how they made something out of nothing, at least the way they did it specifically
sometimes I wish they left his powers and how he got them vague, just handwave it with "he's just that good"
Well didn't he lose his powers when he killed davoth technically
yeah
I've imagined a scenario where he's the player character again but the gameplay is completely different because he lost his powers
kinda out of spite
That would be nice to see
Glory kills might not be a thing anymore because of that lmao
also I hate this fucking pretense of "Doom is nothing without the Slayer"
it annoyed the fuck out of me during Annihilation's prerelease period and it annoys the fuck out of me now
I have mixed feelings about it tbh
Doom has basically always revolved around Doomguy, for better and worse. I’m not a huge fan of his abilities having a specific explanation, but he’s the “face” of the series in a very real way
This isn’t a “nothing about Doom except the Slayer is good” it’s “he’s been the protagonist of the series since the first game 30 years ago. It’s kinda too late to go back on that”
Resident Evil or Final Fantasy can change protagonists without issue because they’ve always done that. They never established a series wide protagonist like Doom or Halo or Metroid
That's fair
I do think going to a time, place and/or universe where his reputation is less established would be a good way to shift the tone a bit though
Just gates it to a covenant ship
Don't they still have shit to do with the plot holes and stuff from eternal
Not sure if they could really just go to some other time or universe
I guess, but I honestly don’t care about the story enough for that to bother me
It would feel random like doom 3 was imo
Mostly I’d like for the next game to dial the scale way back and shift the tone away from “epic quest to fulfill destiny”
As in you would like it to just be a human trying to survive and not like doomguy who wants revenge?
Well imo that would be nice and more "realistic" cuz who wouldn't fight for survival like that
Not necessarily, just make it more focused on one place and regain some of the space horror vibes of pre-Eternal
Doom 3 Doomguy technically is a separate character
also, ROE had the Engineer and Lost Mission had the Bravo Team marine
don't forget the other two playable characters in the second RPG
Doom 3 was the 4th title, and they didn’t stick to that new format
Yeah see the problem was that not alot of ppl liked that
Also spin-offs like the RPGs don’t count in this regard
And yeah, Doomguy was established enough that people were unhappy with the Marine
Even in 2003
what about
doom rpg 3
for 3 dollars on the google play store and only the google play store
Don't give me another doom mobile game that I can't play man
great idea right
Sounds cool ig with modern technology doom rpg could get an upgrade
i was joking but tbh doom rpg 3 would be cool
like a port of both doom rpgs to pc as like a bonus similar to how doom eternal had doom 64 and a new doom rpg
That’s how most games are. Doom has always around a single dude from the start and personally I see no reason for it to change
Pretty much
Meh, I see no problem with it
To me, it annoys me when people want a series to become more than what it is
That just results in publishers beating it for as much money as they can
WELCOME TO #the-future
Wolfenstein also revolved around one guy, but the reboots made it so more characters were involved with blazko
But idk if doom can really do that since doomguy isnt the talkative typa guy
maybe new characters idk
or maybe he could work with the intern guy plus dr elena richardson, some new character or even the wretch
actually ngl dr elena richardson is actually kinda out of picture here
but yeah finally introducing the wretch would be awesome
Definitely
considering the insane mystery of the demon
Maybe the wretch would be a character we could play
my personal headcanon is that the wretch is doomguy's dead wife
But there isnt much info about it so idkf
The wretch made the praetor suit right
i mean why else would the wretch betray the demons unless they have some other plans
I don't really care about new characters in this franchise tbh
yes the wretch betrayed the demons to help doomguy
If they made another game that had literally no human characters other than doomguy, it wouldn't matter to me
As it is I don't care about any of the characters anyway
I just kill demons
Same but if they have to bring new dharacters into the story to bring doomguy back, so be it ngl
Do you even need a new character for that?
Could just start the game same way 2016 started tbh
He is stuck in a coffin in heaven rn so
in my personal headcanon the wretch joined doomguy to help him kill demons just so she could free the demons from their eternal pain.
too repetitive.
Meh
We’ll just have to wait cuz they aint giving us anything about doom rn
a lot of ppl specially the ones here want more and new things to doom. imo its cool and it brings more stories in other than the same shit
And if they do it could still change cuz doom 2016 was alot different when the first looks came out
since we know the demons are always in eternal pain unless they're killed, i felt like this would be a valid and good motivation for ANY demon to betray their kind to join the slayer
I must be in the minority then, I mean don't get me wrong I want new things but only where gameplay is concerned. In regards to story and whatnot I really don't care much.
tbh i dont care that much about story too but i feel it would be cool and awesome and could even bring some new fans who care about stories into the community
I'd take a doom game where they literally go back to text screens at the end of chapters, not that they will though
Exactly but its hard to think of something that could fit into a story like doomguy’s
that's why we cant just focus on doomguy and doomguy only
you would take that but not a lot of other ppl would and its possible the game might fail a bit because of this so called "lazy" move in this day and age
Yeah which is unfortunate
i think it makes devs and directors up their game and make good stories and shit
oh and speaking of the future being able to inspect our weapons would be awesome
I go to plenty of games for those kinds of gaming experiences, just not doom
If we’ll still play as doomguy, we probably will need a new character to get doomguy back into the story like Halo infinite did with echo 216
or maybe even inspecting the toys or smth
yeah idk who would be main character enough to do that
like i said, some ppl dont want it to be one soldier so i thought we could play as a human with a team trying to revive doomguy
and while we're on that journey,we see our teammates and friends get slaughtered and murdered which would be so brutal its awesome.
If doom 1993 was released in this time and they made doom 2 shortly after thst, it would definitely be seen as a huge cash grab
absolutely
I'm in the future😱
So if they do that with eternal those people will go crazy
i think my ideas are decent
wait a few years fr
the current ones are all amazing either way. try doom 2016 before eternal or you cant ever play 2016
Ya you can go back to 2016 easily but for some reason people who did eternal first suffer from some sort of muscle memory issue haha
I think I'm doomed cuz i played eternal first lmao
But thank God my muscle memory hasn't developed for eternal yet
But in a few months it prob will lmao
It's all muscle memory which you can work on. I go from eternal to classic to 2016 to 64 to dusk ect over and over hahah just need to practice a bit
Yeah im still new to eternal so my muscle memory ain't there yet so there's still hope
Yes
2016 is harder on nightmare
The new Wolfenstein games are also much more focused on narrative so having more characters just makes sense
I would love doomguy to start talking since what happened at the end of ancient gods pt2
I don’t like his voice. He’s better as a silent protagonist
Who said he was silent?
some people literally told me he was physically mute before Eternal released
I like the idea that he's been talking the entire time, but his helmet plays heavy metal too loud for any of it to be heard
But also agreed
I think it's kinda generally agreed on that the Divinity Machine made him a fair bit less talkative
I think Eternal’s amount of Doomguy talking (single digit lines but more than zero) is the appropriate balance. Especially because the idea that there’s nothing stopping him from just explaining what he wants but he doesn’t want to explain is funnier than him seemingly not being able to
Just let's actions do the talking. Funniest in 2016 just breaking shit ignoring what he's told to do
agreed
Tbf that’s most of what happens in Eternal as well. Just with the added knowledge that he could absolutely say something back and just chooses not to
for Doom Shock I guess the player character wouldn't even be just a normal human marine or soldier, they'd be a scientist or civilian
they would have access to military hardware like weapons and armor tho
I'm thinking a little bit like Half-Life Echoes too, where the player character was also a scientist
even the Doom Bible gives me System Shock vibes
maybe one of the melee weapons (if there's multiple) would be a brass knuckle like the classic fist sprite
I prefer silent doomguy. In my head canon he's just so over with this demon shit that he doesn't even bother with words anymore
You can always turn off the sound
Nah, I'm not that petty
Yeah the vibe I get from the Slayer in Eternal is that he’s not that angry anymore, just sick of everyone’s bullshit
Just look at how he acts in 2016 compared to Eternal
In almost every cutscene in 2016 Doomguy breaks something
Maybe a long rest is what he needed after all
make the Cueball an actual enemy, something like the exploding fuel tank zombies in 2016
or the fast flaming zombies in 3
Agreed
always fun knocking back the fuel tank zombies as a makeshift living grenade
Yeah
One of my friends actually got a trick shot by accident where he shot pb at a cueball and it one shot a cyber mancubus as it spawned in
Really satisfying
honestly I'd like a fast-moving acrobatic enemy with a gun
like, even more agile than the Imps
rolls around on the ground like that one enemy in Rise of the Triad and does somersaults in the air
I would really like to see a good glass cannon enemy
I wish the humanoid Jekkad troopers were actual enemies
I don't know why but I've wanted a proper human enemy in the series for a while
I expected Cultist Base to have something similar to the cultists from Blood
Yeah same
and it'd fit with the entire UAC being corrupted
I want another BFG-wielding boss like Sabaoth and the Doom Bible Cyberdemon too
A rocket-launcher zombie is an enemy that would be a good glass cannon
An SSG zombie?
yeah, a zombie that had an SSG
Skulltag was a multiplayer-oriented ZDoom fork that had custom content built into it
Now that's scary
new weapons like a railgun and a hitscan BFG called the 10K
and it looked just like the 2005 BFG too but green
Nice
Skulltag ended development in 2012 due to conflicts between the project lead and the rest of the team
then it got sorta revived as Zandronum
Cool
Zandronum doesn't include the custom content Skulltag had by default but you can download an addon that restores it
I want a survival horror doom tbh not fast paced demon killing like the og doom doom 2016 or eternal
I would love to see us head to Demios the other moon of mars finally, we always seem to head to phobos!
Set on demon overrun earth where you have to find weapons and supplies to survive
Doom 3 is closer to that than the rest of the series. It’s still action but worth a try if that’s what you’re looking for
Play the Overthinked mod for the true survival horror experience
well sorry i found doom 3 too scary to play past the first demonic invasion map with the zombies
Wants horror but to scared of horror.. interesting
i dont mean doom 3 levels of horror
yknow submerged in darkness with "spooky" jumpscares thrown in
[and a shotgun that doesn't work unless you shove it up a demons nose]
Honestly it kinda sounds like you want Resident Evil in first person, which already exists and I genuinely recommend it
got the original System Shock earlier and I still think a Doom Shock game would be interesting
it should still feel like Doom to an extent tho and not just System Shock with demons
like there could be an inventory system, but it wouldn't be as extensive and complex as System Shock's
and you'd be able to hold all weapons at once
for the setting I'd go for a ship that's literally possessed a la Event Horizon
Something I’d like to see for the next Doom is a rework to UN. Specifically to replace “no continues” with a modifier that makes things harder in a fun way. Classic Doom does this with Nightmare’s Fast Monsters and demons not staying dead. Doom 3 did it by lowering the HP cap but giving you a way to overheal. My favorite example however is DMC “Dante Must Die” mode, where enemies get a big boost to damage, defense, and armor (resistance to being stunned) once they’ve been spawned in a certain amount of time
Eh UN in 2016/eternal is kinda a mememode anyways but it being more interesting yet still not meant to be taken serious would be cool
Basically I wish there was a mode that is harder than Nightmare but isn’t Nightmare but No continues
Phobos is more iconic. There also probably isn’t anything interesting on Deimos besides UAC facilities and we’ve already seen plenty of those
I think revisiting Deimos would be a great way to revisit the Hellish techbase concept once more
Do it just like how 1 did it, random parts are now marble and stone and them there’s the fleshy bits
Have like strange foliage and greenery cover walls
It could be fun to have a small number of demons who use teamwork. Like imagine a wolflike demon that is weak in terms of stats always goes in groups and will intentionally attack from different directions. This is pack hunter 101 so the more animalistic demons should theoretically be able to do at least simple predator tactics like this
If argent energy is the combination of hell energy and souls, does that mean lost souls are just argent energy? 🤔
They even alternate between red and blue colours
Maybe? I think Lost Souls are souls corrupted by Hells influence. Argent is created through a certain process as seen throughout Nekravol. Also think that Lost Souls are quite literally just human souls that have been sent to Hell and weren’t strong enough to become a stronger demon. The alternation between red and blue just indicates whether there active or not. Blue= Inactive Red= Active
@feral plover Sorry for the ping but Lost Souls aren’t just Argent right? There different from the souls used in Nekravol right?
Yes, that's right. They're implied to be souls that meet a different fate than becoming Argent
Nah fuck resident evil
Proud resident evil hater since the ps1
dunno whats there to be proud of
Imo Resident Evil works better in first person. Not saying the 3rd person ones are bad or anything like that.
I love Resident Evil. I haven’t played much of 7 yet but so far it’s the only RE to actually scare me, if only a bit. For me the main appeal is the resource puzzle aspect that colors how you approach the rest of the game. Favorite is the 2 remake
I wouldn’t want Doom to play like RE though. Each franchise has a clear identity worth sticking to, and for Doom fast action combat is a key part of that identity
But i feel doom is just a fast paced power fantasy
To an extent yeah. I don’t see your point
There’s definitely more to it, but the other components are pretty closely linked to the action and power fantasy
doom 64 is kinda close
Never tried Ultra Nightmare in either game. It sounds like a waste of my time. Insane difficulty in which I can lose it all in seconds from a single error. Not for me.
Ultra Violence is basically the default difficulty setting for most players, including me.
Ultra Violence is normal for Doom fans, anything below is basically for people who want to enjoy it more casually.
Ultra Violence likely is the most played by Doom Fans because we all would love to do a Nightmare run, but don't for one reason or another
For classic sure. Not so much nu doom
Nightmare is challenging but surprisingly doable in nuDoom
im not a big fan just cause re4 really has that intensity
When you’re in first person it just feels like u have too much control over urself nothings holding u back.
If ur in third person u gotta worry abt your own character being hit which Increases the fear having to manage overwhelming odds and you can really see the “Close calls” an enemy almost touches u
The Less comfort you have the more fear you’re in
I get that. But with Re7 for example the cramped spaces and first person perspective make everything more tense for me
personally the only section that really spooked me was the Baby halls
in re8
the scariest part of re8 easily
Re7 def scared the fuck out me
