I often reloaded checkpoints over and over to farm masteries and rune upgrades

Upgrading the runes is definitely something that adds to the chore especially the one where you need to collect like 2500 points worth of armor

2016 is a great game but when nearing the end of it I was longing to play Eternal again

no return points and no fast travel makes it abysmal

yes you can replay levels to get things you missed but the entire reason I like getting everything is to see the end screen fill out fully, also its a waste of time

Argent tower has a really fun speedrun way to access the secret level

You grab the invincibility power-up in the final arena and during the second count-down you jump down the opening in the middle and boost yourself with the gauss cannon to go down even faster, invincibility negates the fall damage and you can get another weapon upgrade point

Made me like the level more tbh

Even Hugo Martin himself says 2016 Nightmare was much harder than Eternal Nightmare

He said it on the Cultist Base stream.

Only thing I can think of is, 2016 is probably easier to cheese/exploit, and Eternal wants players to do a bit more things at once.

But Eternal's enemies do significantly less damage, dash spam and air mobility abuse makes you nearly untouchable especially combined with the chaingun shield which is basically God mode and has a stupidly powerful shield bash

Eternal enemies drop significantly more ammo and health. One meathook SSG on a fodder is enough to give you a very significant amount of your health and armor back.

Meanwhile in 2016. Health and armor was significantly harder to restore.

2016 enemies also kill you in one to three hits consistently.

2016 Imps and Barons are extremely accurate, fast, and fantastic at reading your movement and one fireball or melee can fuck you up from them... and you don't have the dash spam and air mobility abuse to dodge them for free.

You have to rely on pure strafe skill and fakeouts.

Though Eternal did improve base fire SFX on the Plasma Rifle as well as the Frag grenade sounds.

2016 guns sounded AND looked really heavy, metallic, echoey, thunderous, and bassy... and would change sounds dependent on parts of the environment you shoot at.

Before I have the rocket launcher specifically

I use the explosive shotgun but that doesn't always work out

And running around them to shoot will kill me 9/10 times

Granates are awesome but I only have one and it takes quite a bit to recharge...

Do you think it'd be good to resist getting hazard protection and decreased weapon self damage in favor of better equipment?

@frail marlin i'm using a very nice tactic for taking down the shield possesed soldiers :
Get the remote detonate module for the rocket launcher, and when you see a possesed soldier, and that you're far away enought, shoot a rocket a little bit off the shield possesed soldiers, and when the rocket is about his position, use the remote detonate module to explode the rocket.
The shield will be useless because the rocket will explode on the side of the shield possesed soldier

That's great advice and I do that too but what do I do before that? I think there are 5 shield soldiers in total before I have access to the early rocket launcher

One needs a bit before his shield boots up and I blow him away with an explosive shot but the others are a real pain in the ass

No. 3 are in level 2 , all in the narrow hallway that leads towards the VEGA terminal at the end. The first is at the entrance. i use a granate for him and sometimes I have to help out with the explosive shotgun. The second is in a room with two pillars and two regular soldiers. I normally use the grenate for the two normal soldiers cause one charged shot can kill me

So that's where i start to struggle

The third is the one I mentioned before with the shield down whan you enter

The 4th is in Lv 3 near where the first keycard and a collectible is. He is behind a pillar, there are imps and other soldiers and he is very hard to hit

The 5th is the worst one. After you gget said keycard a hellknight, a soldier and an imp spawn with him. I can kill all those with ease but the soldier is sooooo far away and waits until you come to him. Too far to throw a granate and too far for the explosive shotgun as well

So far it's a 50/50 shot wether I live it

good on you, the stun bomb is a very useful mod, especially during the beginning of the game

i have another good way to defeat them, with my experience of assault rifle missiles, fire some at them and their shield is gone, master the missile and you are unstoppable, leaving the stun bomb for another use like hell knights, etc...

how i learnt this was by spamming them when i unlocked the mastery lol

the missiles are insanely op when you master them, especially against shields so you dont need to wait for the stun bomb to cool down

not to mention you have an insane amount of missiles so feel free to gun em down

I tend to use shotgun with bomb mod for quick kills but I also use super shotgun or rocket launcher with lock in mod for big enemies

And gauss cannon with sniper mod is a hell of a satisfying weapon to use

It also helps to be close

I'd recommend switching between ssg and shotgun with bomb mod

Usually you can deal with hellknights in 3 ssg shots

Keep moving, know where all health/ armour pickups are (you need to be as close to full health as you can for each fight), use and upgrade the ammo boost rune, use the BFG as much as you can, once you get siege mode USE IT and just know where all the argent cells/praetor tokens are

if you can beat mission 3 then its smooth sailing if you plan ahead

The chainsaw is very different

It uses gas and has a animation for killing demons

The bigger the demon the more fuel needed

You can try the rune over and over again. Every time you fail, (if you do) try thinking of new strategies. Also try doing them when you find them. I set them off and I got about half way through and I regretted it pretty bad. But if you do find and and choose not to do it, when you get back of the campain you can find rune trials and do the ones you found but didn't do.

I can't post images, so I'll describe things. Was going back through the first level, because there were items I had missed, like a Preator Token. And I found this black and white glowy wall looking thing? Both punching and shooting it does nothing. It's too out of place to NOT be a secret... But I don't know what to do with it.

usually the lever and the doorway that blocks this secret area aren't very far apart from each other so you might wanna look in the vicinity

they remade some of them but lemme tell you it does get pretty difficult pretty fast

because of the new behavior of some demons you can get destroyed in seconds

and it doesn't help that a lot of classic maps can feel cramped compared to the more open areas of the campaign

I don't think that'll be too much of a problem on ITYTD. And I'm used to at least some of the levels. I did play the first three episodes of Doom 1, after all! I think a couple maps in Doom 2, but memory is hazy...

Words do not describe my hatred for Hell Knights... They're big and thus easier to hit. But they're fast, tanky, and hit like a ton of bricks! And when you're smushed in the Foundry's tighter halls... You either prioritize the big bastards, or die trying.

How do you get better at movement and secret finding? I'm trying to fill out the map, check all the Foundry's nooks and crannies... But I keep overshooting jumps and burning to death.

Also, a 3D map is useful! But confuses my simple, smooth brain...

Admittedly, Id is quite good at Hiding the Secrets! But I'm slowly getting better at finding them. It's a good feeling, a good sign! As opposed to a Sign of Evil, something of misery.
(Yes, I'm making Doom 1 soundtrack jokes. Secret hunting drives me to boredom...)
