if we're supposed to believe that most or all of the cybernetically augmented demons of Doom 2016 were in fact only cybernetically augmented because of the UAC, then how was the final boss, the "Spider Mastermind" already built before the Slayer met Olivia in the final mission???

been months since I first beat Doom 2016 but I never came back to read the Codex file on the "Spider Mastermind" until now, and now I'm genuinely confused about it

I thought Olivia transformed into the spider mastermind. I assume the mastermind's cybernetics are just a manifestation from the cybernetics that she already had on her body due to her disease.

as much as a broad explanation like that can make sense, it does... "the cybernetics are just a manifestation..." yea I suppose that makes about as much sense as the rest of the series, I just wondered if there was an official answer.

just that, if you go back and read the Codex about it, they really dont go into much detail at all about the discovery, so it leaves a lot to the imagination

yea as far as I can tell, because I played Eternal shortly after 2016 myself, Eternal handles very similarly to 2016 but you'll certainly notice the differences that exist as you come to them

I was mostly saying how 2016 didn’t have as much weapon balance. Fully mastered Siege Mode Gauss Cannon is insanely busted. Your guns could hold so much more ammo. You didn’t need to weapon swap as much if at all.

While Eternal establishes weapon swapping as a core mechanic along with resource management

So doom 2016 is a very solid game, been enjoying it quite a bit

That said, I’ll still take eternal instead any day of the week, but I do think doom 2016 has a lot of qualities that let it stand on its own as a good game

Especially the map design, the map design is so good man

Being able to mix linearity with non-linear map design takes serious skill

De does some things that aren't amazing either, but it just becomes transcendent in its gameplay loop especially on Nightmare. Play them both

Definitely go for all the secrets and challenges, I've essentially 100%ed the game except for a few rune trials and its honestly quite a lot of fun trying to find things in th environment you missed. On the other hand some things like the Icon of Sin secret are ludicrously complicated to the point i had to look up a guide. I say go for it but in the end its up to you

Well, I guess I'm "fresh meat". I started Doom 2016, went back to beat Doom 1993 (no Episode 4 or SIGIL), then started Doom 2. Just kinda stopped playing for a while, and now I'm back playing through Ultimate Doom + SIGIL. Apparently SIGIL is getting a sequel quite soon too, so quite a convinent time for me to come back.

if you have never modded your game and you get a corrupted save file, that's an uh oh. But if you had played one of your saves during a modded devmode play session, then those saves get marked for deletion when not in devmode.

I’d say it depends a lot of whether you’re talking about Nightmare difficulty and if you’re cheesing the game with Siege mode, fully mastered SSG, and the infinite ammo rune. 2016 is significantly harder if you don’t use runes and play on Nightmare, but otherwise it’s easier

there's not really any lore you need to understand. There's pickups for them, but the plot is pretty straightforward that they don't matter. Eternal shoves the lore in your face a lot more.

most of the lore is in collectibles, but they are unneccesary to understand the story. The research data on a specific demon type or background info on the weapon you find doesn't come into play at any point in the plot.

He’s technically the same Doomguy from the early games, but they had very little story at all. Most we can say is he was a space marine who was stationed on a military Phobos base as punishment for attacking a superior officer (who ordered firing on civilians), he was the only survivor when the demons showed up, and it became personal when the demons killed his rabbit (no really).

The dash still feels weird to me. Doom movement has always had a lot of emphasis on momentum and I feel dashes take away from that a bit. As much as I like Eternal, I maintain that it’s a bit too complicated for its own good.

Btw I do recommend playing the first two Doom games on PC if possible. It’s from nearly a decade before aim assist in FPS was really a thing so it’s kind of hard to play on controller

That being said any PC from the last 10 years that can run much of anything should be able to run it (the first 2, not 2016)

In general Doom games can be played in pretty much any order and it’s fine. Main exception is that Doom 2 is kind of built on Doom 1’s knowledge base (they have the same engine, weapon and enemy stats, etc)

Plasma weapons can delete the shield quickly, shotgun sticky bombs at their feet can work, and their shield can never protect them from getting torn in half by a chainsaw
