Depends on a few things. If you ignored secrets if you ignored trials and what difficulty. 7 hours seems normal for a vet though or even less
Hell Razers are basically Hell counterparts to the soldiers, just like the Unwilling is for civilian Possessed.

No? I have a friend here that finds the game easy does un nightmare no deaths often. If you have 2k hours in like me it should be at that point. I still very much enjoy it though and you can still fuck up so challenges do occur on runs. I can say from experience no 1 run has been the same as the other

If youâre beating UN consistently, Iâd take that as a sign that you need a difficulty that pushes things further, like playing without runes or no masteries or a mod that locks you at 1HP or something

i got good at 2016 and now i started playing eternal on nightmare and i felt really dumb for dying like 6 times in the arena with arachnotrons revenants and hell knights in the second level

Hell Razers are supposed to be hitscanners. In theory. Theyâre really bad at it though
Iâd describe them as âtheyâre a really good idea for how to make hitscanners work in this game, but they needed a bit more tuning to get rightâ

they do quite a bit of damage but really won't hit you unless you're not moving. I think the idea is to enforce movement even at range

I think I know a way to make them a meaningful threat, but itâs not really conducive to modern Doom design. Itâs have fights in narrow hallways

My idea of tight corridor combat to make razers work was basically born from the thought process of âthe ai is weak, so how can I level design around the problem?â I wouldnât even think of trying to fix the ai

What the Doom mod Sigil taught me is that minor encounters become really scary if you deny the player room to maneuver. I definitely wouldnât want a whole campaign of that though
i try to encourage movement. the entire map you should basically be in the air as much as possible
since you can theoretically have infinite air time

Thatâs neat. Very Ultrakill all around. Iâm a big fan of pushing the limits of the vanilla mechanics so asking players to master moving in tight spaces is one way to do that. Another would be having a whole arena fight happen in an area where all but a few spots are toxic sludge or something.

That is one of the best aspects of Sigil. Itâs dark and cramped. Makes fights more engaging

As much as I love Eternal, there's something about fighting the Doom 2016 Barons of Hell that gives so much pleasure to me. It's a similar feeling to fighting them in the original Doom
I like how they force you to be really intentional with your movement as they throw a long stream of fireballs at you, some of which are predictive shots that hit you if you don't juke them.
Yeah. For my part I love that 2016 has more of a traditional ammo economy going on, especially without certain runes to break it.
The Barons in Eternal, meanwhile, only ever throw fireballs very occasionally if you're far away from them. Otherwise, they basically behave like juiced up Hell Knights. Still fun in their own way, but I miss some of that dance
(Although I guess similar dynamics exist with the Doom Hunter's cannon attacks)

I just wished we had both the original and fireborne Barons, just as different variations, y'know? I mean, the DLCs eventually added another variation, the Cyber-Barons, so it just makes sense.
With barons no longer being the only massive tanks, it made sense to change their functionality, but Iâd agree they maybe overdid it
I mean, in the codex, the Fireborne Barons are very specifically an offshoot of the regular Barons, so it's kinda strange that the regular ones just stop appearing altogether
Like I said, I don't dislike the design of the Fireborne Barons. They're definitely fun in their own way, being a rushdown superheavyweight that doesn't just immediately die like the Hell Knights... But, yeah, the Baron's dance in 2016 was probably the highlight of that game's combat for me
Yeah. In general I like the feel of 2016âs dance more, in large part because it makes mistakes a little harder to come back from (especially ammo mismanagement) and it works because youâre not fighting quite so fast
Well, I mean, I still personally prefer Eternal overall. It has its own little frustrations ||(like how quickswapping combos gets really heavily emphasized in the DLC when it feels about as awkward as it does in the original BioShockânot bad, but the other BioShock games clearly had better solutions for combo-focused combat)|| but between the intensity, the combat variety, and some of the power fantasy you get to experience, it really touches a feeling of intensity and 'zone' that very few other shooters can
... But if Eternal is an 11, 2016 is absolutely still a 10
I can't imagine Eternal even being playable for those who haven't experienced 2016. It's definitely satisfying enough. Really feels like a perfect revival of that Quake-styled experience

Like, those games are seemingly imitating the experience of multiplayer arena shooters in a singleplayer environment, while something like 2016 feels more like a 'singleplayer arena shooter', if that makes sense.
My favorite part of Doom is the emphasis on playing fast while also needing to be tactical and cautious, and Eternalâs extreme speed kinda forced Id to make the tactical stuff way more forgiving

Most of the tactics in Eternal is based around economy, 'which resources can I afford to use to take down which demons in which order as to minimize my health loss?' While keeping your positioning and the types of threats the demons pose in mindâsometimes a path will be blocked by a Cyber Mancubus, after all.
So, I'm not sure about that 'tactics' thing, per se. I feel like it's about the same as 2016, fundamentally

2016 gives you a lot more ammo, but once itâs gone itâs really gone
Well, I mean, I only ever recalled needing to use the Chainsaw, like, three times, from what I remember of my playthroughâbut I think how you used the chainsaw in 2016 was based more on your own playstyle.
Since I generally liked using all of the weapons, but I can see that there are players who specialize in a smaller pool of the weapons who might use it more.
And, of course, the character upgrades players choose might have entirely different experiences, since those who invest in health will have much less ammo, there's a larger difference
BTW I really recommend Viscerafest. Itâs another indie arena shooter but feels like somewhere between Eternal and Blood.

Definitely been thinking about the idea of one that emphasizes more of Doom's stagger system, for those who aren't as interested in the blinding pace of the likes of Ultrakill or Eternal... Like, a game that focuses less on gunning down hordes with a chaingun like the original Doom games, and moreso tense 'duels'

... not that I don't like mobility. I mean, I'd love to make mobility-centric shooters as well, like bullet hell ones, but Ultrakill definitely has the market covered in 'what if we gave the player ALL of the movement mechanics?'
Viscerafest weapons are really neat. No variation stuff, but thereâs mechanics like how the SSG has something ridiculous like 8 barrels and you can recall the pellets in midair to have them hit the target twice, or how thereâs a flamethrower that is decently powerful and feels amazing to use
Or Mothergunship as well, for that matter

For a while, I've gaslight myself into misremembering the Barons to have shot out multiple projectiles when they did their slams, when it is instead a green AOE attack.
But, yeah, that's really cool. And, like I said, nothing quite like that in Eternalâa demon that mixes up two styles of an otherwise similar attack, I mean
Each projectile generally follows the same behavior no matter what. Like I said, the closest equivalent I can think of is the Doom Hunters firing thrice with their arm cannon, which are all predictive shots that are fun to dodge
It is kinda interesting to see how the Baron's animations have been divided up in Eternal. The Baron no longer does the two-handed fireballs, but he'll sling one-handed fireballs while running if you remain too far away for him to start slinging his various melee attacks... Definitely not at the same rate that he used to, though
... Instead, the two-handed animation is a signature attack of the Dread Knights, who are also very fun enemies to fight
They're slightly less aggressive than the Hell Knights, and instead they'll hold the two-handed pose to charge and fire a really speedy projectile at you, which is generally predictive... But it tends to just barely graze you if you're not just moving slowly in a straight line.
Honestly, no wonder Hugo Martin loves the Hell Knights. Animation-wise, their whole family is just so satisfying to fight. The way they're animated, smoothly going into slam attacks, making big swings at you, and how dynamic they look regardless of what angle you've positioned around them...
None of them are all that difficult because of how much they telegraph their melee attacks, of course, but it feels intense while also being really fair. And they encourage you to dance and strafe in expressive ways
The Barons are my first favorite enemy in 2016, but the Hell Knights are definitely second.
... Also, is it weird that the Hell Guards are my favorite boss fight in 2016?
Not that I don't like Eternal's bosses, but I think I'd rate the Hell Guards as the best in the series
They're very straightforward, but they've got a large variety of attacks, many of which are pretty fun to maneuver around. The contrast between the slow whiff-punishing first phase and the relentless second phase is fun, both phases are fun in their own ways while naturally being reflective of one another
... They don't have any one really annoying or frustrating attack
The Cyberdemon was kinda cool, too, but his attacks just come out way too damn slow for him to pose any threat before you just murder him.
The Hell Guards really got around that by having the first one be protected, so you're kinda forced to go at its pace and pay attention to how its attacks work while you wait for your moment to whiff punish... And then the second phase has the two of synchronizing their attacks with each other's gaps and you're given the freedom to fight them however you wantâor whenever you are able. It's just a perfect fight.
I know some people like the Gladiator in Eternal, but I dunno, he's got some timing-based attacks that just feel really annoying to adapt toâgotta dash out of the way at just the right time, and you're going to get hit a few times or miss a few counters while you try to adjust... Unlike the Marauder, who you fight enough times to get a feel for him, and he's still easy to dash out of the way from if you don't get the counter yet.
With the Hell Guards, what you see is what you get, it all comes naturally, and it's just damn fun.
No gimmicks either.
Oh, yeah, and the Cyberdemon spends WAY too damn long in its staggered states for a bossâon top of generally having difficulty turning around. Does anybody even remember what it even does in its first phase?
I am glad that Eternal ported a lot of his behavior over into a cool enemy, though.. Although I would have much rather they kept those horizontal sword strikes the CB had, instead of those godforsaken ground-waves. I hate the groundwave attacks in Eternal and the way they lock your movement. Any other shooter would have just applied a little bit of opposing momentum that you could maybe improvise with

which means no easy achievements for completionists
the Spider Mastermind sure is a threat as it should be compared to Classic
Classic Spider Mastermind is a hitscanner that can be easily killed/exploited, while 2016 Mastermind is strong and has a wide variety of attacks
such a nice upgrade. it went from being a joke of a hitscanner to an actually challenging and enjoyable boss

and itâs not just enemies glory killing the player
getting electrocuted and gibbed, being set on fire after falling into a pool of lava, getting beheaded by the Cyberdemonâs blade, being cut in half by the Summonerâs ranged attack and a hole left in your torso after being hit by the Hell Razerâs beam
the being set on fire after standing on a pool of lava one is my favourite

Is Doom 2016 Ultra Nightmare hard? It looks like it's difficult for the first few levels, but after you get the bfg and you get the ammo rune, it seems the game becomes a cakewalk except for the parkour
Having infinite ammo above 100 armor just seems a bit broken and the chance for bfg ammo to drop is insane
I'd do it but the only real thing I'm scared of in a UN run is the duo boss and parkour
There's also no real punishment for spamming super shotgun and gauss cannon
it sounds easy
it probably isn't though but still do-able
it's doable but it's not automatic. Once you get bfg, it is much easier though. The beginning levels, particularly level 1 and level 2 are rather hard
i actually think argent facility (level 4) is a run ender
there are tough gore nest fights except for the last one and you have many hell knights and soldiers ready to kick your ass
of course a lot of imps
Imps are probably the most common run killer
They jump around and run away while throwing heavy damage fireballs constantly which will melt doomguy until he gets tanky enough
First 5 levels are probably the hardest
After that it slowly gets easier
argent tower isnt that bad cuz you have 150 health at that point if you decide to spend all cells on health

Yeah mancubus take way more damage if you hit their heads iirc and the triple chaingun to the face has higher DPS than the lock on rockets

when fully upgraded the explosion causes the enemies the splash damage but also depletes their health like poison

Micro missiles for heavy cannon
Stun bombs for plasma
Lock on for rocket launcher

Siege mode for gauss cannon
definitely should try making challenges out of it or trying new things

it decreases the time to get the chaingun to full speed and increase the rate of fire for the normal chaingun (not as fast as mobile turrent tho)
you can also pre charge it to full speed then when you want you can fire at full speed
but really it isnt that much better than even just using the chaingun normally

combine it with the infinite ammo when having a certain amount of armor upgrade, the game becomes a cakewalk

The cyberdemon can just make walls around you, so why doesn't he separate himself from the slayer, trap him in a little box, and just fire rockets in until he dies

it's actually the opposite. the game feels way too forgiving with especially ammo upgrades
Basically the imps will be weaker past foundry because you'll have a fair bit of upgrading by then
Upgrades can affect enemy damage, but then why do imps miss attacks and act differently

They seem to be afraid of the player

when I replay the game, I would upgrade my health and armor but not ammo, because the ammo upgrades are really too forgiving
If I do a no upgrade run I'd spend the one argent capsule or whatever on ammo instead of armor or health
