Doom has always had horror elements (which were sort of sneaked in since they wanted Doom to be an action horror, but due to the technology at time it wasn't 100% possible. But horror still plays a role in Classic Doom), as well as lightning effects. Doom 3 literally expands on them enough to be a horror action, but it slows down the player speed to give an illusion that the game is slower (which surprisingly worked for a lot of people, just pay attention to how, for example, faster Imp is in 3 compared to 1). And one thing that people in general, outside of Doom as well, seem to forget: Horror isn't just about being scary, it's also about being disturbing. And if you don't think 3 is disturbing well, pay more attention. Hell pay attention to Doom 1, 2 and 64 cuz they have disturbing factors.

Also, about halfway through the campaign, you'd have teh chaingun, AR, plasma gun and the shotgun.
I have no idea when to use the chaingun, as it isn't very accurate. The AR is weaker compared to the chaingun, the shotgun isn't very useful except at point blank, and the plasma gun doesn't hurt fast enough. What is the optimal weapon I should keep equipped mainly?

I used plasma as my workhorse and chaingun or rockets when I needed more damage. Chaingun is very powerful and easier to aim hits compared to the slow projectiles. Different projectiles are easier to hit with other attacks. Ie rev rockets are easier to shoot with plasma. Whereas the machine gun easily shoots caco fireballs

Afterwards Doom Marine goes back to the base and waits from (presumably) 16.11.2145. to 20.11.2145. 21PM until the fleet finally fucking comes, by the time they finally arrive everyone on the base is dead as hell (pun intended), expect for Doom3Guy. They find him sleeping somewhere because he presumably searched the base for any remaining demon and take him away. They find ||swaggy|| Swann whom bled to death while Betruger became a dragon with a skull and his head is a tongue, and then in ROE you play as some idiot. No one knows what the hell happened to Doom Marine but anything you could think of is likely to be depressing.

there really does not need to be, but it's modern Doom, so of course every little thing has to do something with the canon instead of just being a design and/or gameplay thing. For example, the predator suit(TM) apparently when it kills demons, gameplaywise when you kill a demon you get resources. But guess what, it's not just a gameplay feature, it's also a canonical thing that happens, basically the predator suit DoomGuy wears gives him the ability to "drain from his enemies (demons)" or some shit.

I like that the demons are actually really faithful mechanics wise to the classic games and that every one of them has some form of illumination so you can still attack them and not need to switch to the flashlight every 0.07 seconds (a complaint I commonly see levied against it, but I actually think them having illumination and needing to find a light/gun balance is cool)

Like having workers take the explosive and toxic barrels outside to blow them up with rocket launcher, a lot of the things are risky, but it's not their problem. People think it's a slower game but if you've payed attention you'll notice that the player speed is seemingly the only slower thing, demons move about the same speed as they did in CLassic Doom, hell some are even faster (and weapon swaping is much faster too)

Only three important enemies of D2 are missing in D64.
The Spider Mastermind is super situational and doesn't affect the gameplay that much.

The one thing you could never remake in 64 style is Plutonia, as ironically those 3 missing enemies (chaingunners, revs and archs) are the fundamental base of all Plutonia gameplay.

It depends. There's a couple of improvements in there, like an armor-flashlight, widescreen support, improved running-speed, checkpoints, and a new campaign, but some features could be considered as down-grades like no 3D EAX Sound, more lighted levels, and no muzzleflashes lights for example.

Oh, and mods incompatibilities, thought, they can be converted, and a lot of them has either been converted, or propose two versions for each versions.

It is still a solid game, and still graphically impressive at some aspect, but do be prepared that it's more of a survival horror kind of game than all other versions. The maps are smaller, more restrictive and you feel generally more threatened.

Well, a lot of secrets and loot are hidden throught PDA-notes, and a lot of story-elements are told like that. It isn't technically really needed to read all of those, but it's really suggested with the amount of it, and it completly stop the flow of the game. Except if you are fine with the horror immersion the game is pushing.

Look, you most likely won't get that from either version. The bfg edition simply adds some modifications (some more unnecessary than others imo), alongside doom 1 and 2, another dlc/expansion pack which I believe is called "the lost mission" and the obvious addition of the bfg.

Doom 3 is generally not that fast paced, especially when compared to the other doom games, it's focused more on the horror jumpscare-y aspect of such games

That personally doesn't really affect me (I have pretty tough skin) but if you don't like that then I'd recommend playing other titles perhaps, like doom 64. Or, if you're willing, try and find a mod for doom 3 that will accommodate your gaming preferences
