some of those are "boom"maps. there is almost no chance that boom engine maps ever get ported onto the vanilla unity port. The last set, Arrival has some larger setpieces. But there are other strong vanilla mapsets like scythe2 or Alien Vendetta that I'd like to see. In terms of the real enormous levels, they are oftentimes not vanilla.

Look, if you want to play more varied and larger maps(In HD uncapped FPS widescreen with custom controls(m&k or controller) for any map that you like from the last 30 years, I would have to recommend getting the game on steam and ripping the doom2.wad file into a folder with a fanmade engine like Woof or gzdoom or eternity

i accidentally tried to switch to the chaingun instead of the shotgun, and i didn't have the chaingun
so i switched back to the shotgun, fired a shot, ran out of ammo and instinctively switched to the pistol
but then my weapons disappeared and wouldn't come back even after going into the next map
couldn't even switch to the fist

Not really a fork, but once it comes out, you could pair up Voxel Doom and Bolognese, if it works it might be fun with 3D models and gore.

doom 2 is considered a different game from doom 1
Id software considers it a new game
but pretty much everyone groups doom 1 + 2 + final doom and refers to them as 'classic doom' or 'og doom'
so I wouldn't call them standalone games unless they make significant changes

e3m2 isn't too bad if you can get the megaarmor quickly. If you have the mega and the plasma, then you should be good to go

e1 has m3 and m9 which are h&ck, e2 is mostly chill but m6 is maybe the hardest doom93 level. e3 is pretty chill. e4 is terribly difficult(m1 and m6. and m4's start imo).
doom2 has a mostly chill first episode but map04 is terrible pistol start. How hard e2 is for you is kiiinda reliant on whether you go for the PE secret. And then e3 is mostly chill except map29....oh wait no map22 is terrible. So maybe doom2 e2 and doom1 e3 are the best NM episodes

Open the files tab -> click doom II in Doom -> wait for it to download -> extract the .pk3 file from the .rar file -> drag and drop said .pk3 file on gzdoom.exe

Zandronum is based on a slightly older version of GZDoom, it is a source port made specifically for online multiplayer doom

On a kind of related note, the chaingun in Doom isnāt actually a chaingun. Itās a portable gatling gun. A chaingun is technically a large gun held in place with chains
does it change depending on who's using it? Your chaingun has one barrel(as does the dropped weapon sprite) but the former human's chaingun has multiple barrels)

highly recommend a -nomonsters exploration so you get a real good mental map of where everything is. There is a megaarmor and berserk hidden in the...slough?

The Unity port is the official source port using the Unity engine

I forgot to mention, but the dosbox version Steam gives, for some reason does not give you all of the vanilla files, so you canāt set custom controls for it unless you supply the original files yourself. The Unity port has the control bindings option built in as you may have notices if youāve been using the Unity port.

Chocolate Doom and Crispy Doom are easier to set up from what Iāve heard

does anyone know how "weapon swap when getting ammo for empty weapon" works? If you are totally out of ammo with all weapons equipped: if you have the fist out and collect a backpack, you switch to the RL. If instead, you have the pistol out, you swap to the plasma.
That's interesting. No idea why. I always assumed it switched to the next most powerful weapon
backpacks are the only way to introduce ambiguity with this type of thing since otherwise, only one weapon type can be switched to(ssg and bfg are not considered as swap options for this. oversight?)
with pistol out and nonempty cells, you switch to shotgun. if both shotgun and plasma aren't empty, then you switch to nothing. stay on pistol.
and with fist, it prioritizes rocket, then plasma, then shotgun.
So I guess the priority is rocket(if from fist) > plasma > shotgun > chaingun(if from fist) = pistol(if from pistol). Which is super strange since the "out of ammo swap priority" is plasma > ssg > chaingun > sg > pistol > chainsaw > RL > BFG > fist

To use mods with GZDoom, you need to drag the .pk3 file onto GZDoom
ZDL is super helpful with loading stuff. I have no idea how files work and ZDL makes it work
Have not used GZDoom in a while, been using exclusively dosbox

When I was playing e1 with the idkfa soundtrack, there was a moment of absolutely perfect timing in e1m8
So sign of evil in e1m8 starts out as just strings and choir voices, and then the metal kicks in later, and I had rockets from the previous level, so I was able to beat the barons pretty quickly, and I beat them at just the right time that the walls lowered right as the metal kicked in

Type this code on the code panel in gzdoom: iddqd, it will activate permanent God mode type the same command and u can turn it off.
that's not just GZdoom. IDDQD has been there since the beginning on dos in 1993. IDDQD won't protect you from level ending 20 damage floor like e1m8's(invuln powerups and idbeholdv does though) nor does it defend against telefrags(usually. some ports allow you to change that behavior in settings)

this is related to doom II slade sound modifications, general question, is there a mod to allow a sound file to complete without being cut off? for example, if I make a custom super shotgun sound it gets cut off from the reload sound. Any mods, scripts, sndinfo, or sndseq to fix this?

it melts into the ground for a bit and then just fucks everything up aside from the starting room
i know about the sector 0 shit so i changed the sector to sector 1 and it still happens
it's not sector 0; it's tag 0. Maybe that's it? Sectors are types of floors(mostly pertaining to lighting and damaging floors) whereas the tag links triggers and triggerables.
nothing like running into a bunch of meatballs, sighing, then remembering you have a bfg

watching GDQ for doom is cool because dime zooms but sad cuz the coach is full of misinfo. Misremembering exact values on bfg tracers, that makes sense. But saying that armor protection value is dependent on armor percent isn't right(it depends on which of these things happened last: green armor or getting zero armor(sets to 1/3); or blue armor, or megasphere(sets to 1/2).

because in cases like unity, it just seems like its just a completely new engine that just reads from the same files that was not derived from the original source in any way, why is it still considered a source port

I tried Knee Deep in the Dead on Nightmare and itās way more of a meat grinder than I remembered. Always underestimating how long demons take to respawn and how fast/accurately they can hit.
When you do kill them on nightmare though they have a slower attack reaction which you can use to your advantage
Iām mad right now that a level in Episode 1 kept getting me killed over and over again on Hurt me Plenty, probably RNG decided to screw me over with hitscan

e4m1 is an m1. It's pistol start only so yeah I think for most people(people tended to play continuous), that was the hardest level in all of doom1 and doom2

finite. They are never infinite on any map ever on UV short of I suppose lost souls from pains
in all original doom wads "spawning" is literally just things teleporting in from offscreen. pretty neat
It's a classic trick for maps to have a small "sound vent" for your sound to flow through which will wake up monsters in a hidden room far away. When you trip some trigger(switch or walkover line), a wall in that room lowers which allows the monsters in that hidden room into a teleporter

pirate doom is a cool wad. uses rayman 2 textures which immediately gives it a swiss seal of approval
its got zdoom functionalities so definitely not vanilla strict
so you're not supposed to jump in pirates!, BUT if you use the sword altfire you can lunge which functions as a dash. Using it midair, you can do some fancy stuff

it has pretty much everything that I'd want from a primary-use port. vanilla,boom, mbf, and mbf21 compat. With All the HD and fps you'd like. It runs smoothly. controller support, full solonet support(even without the annoying multiplayer weirdness if you use -coop_spawns param instead of -solo-net)
That's what I like to hear! Eternity was great. Great controller support but it the lack of solo net made me disappointed. Very small complaint though
I remember the reason you didn't like Eternity's solonet was killcount problems. But eternity's killcount already doesn't work well, unless I just failed to find it in settings
Though I will admit that eternity has mouse movement(like for glides) whereas woof doesn't seem to.
Basically with solo net infighting deaths don't count towards the kill count lol. Year and a half after logging the issue it's still not fixed

I've been intellectually outpaced by the website. Ultimately, my ZDL version does everything that I need it to. I have a spot to enter the IWAD, PWADs/pk3s, extra parameters if I need them(-fast, -coop_spawns/-solo-net, demo stuff, -shorttics), a spot for difficulty(oddly it has very easy, easy, normal, hard, v hard instead of ITYTD through NM but whatever) and it doesn't need to be in the same folder to find new files since there is a search feature. And I can enter any combination of pwads that I'd like which I did need for Alien Vendetta(the dehacked for the level names on the automap was a seperate file)

Doom is already 3d. It has an x,y,z axis for everything. some limitations are no room over room(without trickery), no stacking monsters/players, and a locked perspective. The perspective is there due to the distortion of the renderer.

The way you'd get around these limitations would be by allowing object stacking(this is already the case for projectiles. This limitation was added to ease computation time and not because the engine fundamentally couldn't handle it. Allow explosions to factor in the z axis. Either simply deal with sheering(warped perspective) and allow vertical look OR you would need to fundamentally change the renderer. For room over room -- you basically have 3 options. 1. play Quake. 2. Do some vanilla trickery for very limited RoR(scythe2 map02). 3. Use the Eternity Engine. My understanding is that eternity makes use of portals rather than "adding a dimension." This limitation seems more tied to the level editor than anything.

Innuendo Studios has a good video on the "Arsenal". How different weapons in 90s style boomer shooters cooperate together. To him, he highlights "shotgun" + "machine gun" as your main pair. That might be true for doom1 or doom2. But I was noticing for a lot of these larger mapsets, it's moreso that shotgun + chaingun are really for ammo conservation of bigger guns: whereas rockets are preferred and for shotrange with plasma in panic situations at long range. So really, we get rocket + "better machine gun". Then with BFG, it's usually paired with rockets again where rockets save ammo and BFG is your big gun.
Basically, the vibe I got from the video was that each weapon is similarly powerful -- just superior at different ranges or types of enemy(large monsters or large hordes. alpha damage or continuous damage). But doom weapons, while assymetric, have a pretty clear ranking most of the time.
Classic Doom definitely uses ammo scarcity as a balancing tool

I'm stuck in a triangular room with 3 skulls which leads to 3 different areas how do I get outta there.
you can open the door that led you to this area. With your back to that door, the skulls on the central pillar open the door opposite to where they are(the right skull opens the left door. The back skull, the front door, and the left skull, the right door.) The left door has the yellow key. The front door has two pain elementals and a backpack. The right door has a horde of monsters, a secret, and weird stairs. Only the yellow key is required for progression

doomwiki is of course more reliable for popular maps. For the classic IWADS, scythe, alien vendetta, Ribbiks, Skillsaw stuff(very popular), you'll even get notes on nonsecrets and rando unobtainable objects in the unreachable void that the designer forgot to remove. But for some mapsets, like NERF which are super new, the secrets aren't even posted(last I checked)

There is no secret ending. There are secret exits in e1m3, e2m5, e3m6, e4m2 but the reward is simply the m9 map. The ending is always the same
