if you're playing on GZDoom, then press tilde or ~ and the console will pop up
though, I wouldn't recommend using the console since you can just use the normal doom cheats and they'll work just fine

The main thing is resolution and that it can only support vanilla stuff
but if you're playing on PC, it's overshadowed by the other sourceports the community has to offer

GZdoom is such a specialized engine. It's excellent for heavy mods like pirate doom or supercharge(I think that's gzdoom) and as a bonus, automatically fixes beginner mapping issues like tag 0. But there seem to be more appropriate engines for more vanilla sets. It feels weird to pick a favorite when they all have specialized purposes. LIke woof is vanilla, boom, mbf, mbf21 compatable, eternity is good for heartland and gzdoom for heavy mods

Delving into scythe 1 again modded as usual although when playing scythe with anything plus brutal doom monsters (call of doom this time) I find it's easier to appreciate the speed and the rush it wants you to feel Blasting through those small maps especially the early ones on power fantasy difficulty
Otherwise the a amount of damage I'm taking makes it go from a rush to a slow, slow crawl as I take cover every few seconds to try not to take hits to hold onto every bit of health instead of being able to take a few hits and push through

yeah, downtown has a lot of backtracking
the city levels for doom II are just a flop
the only good thing about the level is that its kinda open-world
backtracking can be fun if the level is interesting, but downtown has none of that
it doesn't look like a city, it's really bland, and the combat just sucks

there are some ok maps in TNT like Mt Pain and in my opinion, map29(though people don't often like that one), map07: Prison is ok. But an enormous chunk of them are confusing and empty and obnoxiously hitscan heavy and overly lengthy.

They are part of retail doom but do not have their own cohesive identity like any of the IWADS

Everyone has this morbid curiosity about the MLs and for good reason: they are a historical artifact of retail doom. So I can't stop you from visiting them but do understand that doom is better than the master levels.

That wouldn't work too easily. doom1 requires the special boss death behavior on e1m8, e2m8, e3m8 and secret exits on e1m3, e2m5, e3m6, e4m2. Doom2 only allows secret exists on map15, map31 and has special death behavior for mancs and arachnos on map07. Maaaybe if you were to use dehacked and convert your cybers and spiderdemons and barons to mancs, arachnos, keens, whatever can trigger stuff and use different WADS for each episode but align them so the secret exit is on map15 maybe
I dunno, I just heard that they did convert doom 1 levels to doom 2
you'll be able to recreate most maps but the episodic structure will be difficult to replicate

Yeah doom 4 vanilla doesn't really allow you to beef up to melt heavies. But embers of Armageddon really give you the 2016 feel if you're looking to melt things. Far from vanilla though

GlBoom+ is the same thing as prboom+
The only difference is they use different config files
GLBoom+ has errors in certain things
By default GlBoom+ is set to OpenGL renderer while PrBoom+ is set to software renderer
But you can change the renderer in the setting making them behave identically

You don't because the source code for doom eternal hasn't been released
But there is currently one mod for classic doom available that tries to copy the style and gameplay of it faithfully which is embers of Armageddon eternal but I don't recommend it because it's very very buggy
there is slayer's testament, a quake total conversion mod
its very faithful to doom eternal while doing it's own thing with the custom campaigns, horde maps, and even some custom fanmade ones packed it
and yeah there eoa as mentioned by the guy above me (doe for some reason it uses doom 2016 weapons on my end)

atleast someone was able to realize the original idea for doom with a mod called "doom delta"
It's not a well written story is what I'm saying if you even think about it for a moment
And honestly with how much they expanded the universe in eternal alone it was bound to be convoluted
Unlike say halo that had like 4 or 5 games to build up the world building and lore to a point where a universe /spanning story makes sense

It based off of 80s 90s Sci fi horror and action so the story takes a back seat to action but the charm of doom lore is the corny inspiration it takes reference from. I'm a giant horror fan and I love it. I suggest if you want a huge complex story and are upset doom doesn't offer that maybe play something else

The plasma gun is better
Its good for hot situations. Small encounters but the bfg is the best weapon in the game and can clear entire rooms when you're in deep shit. Not something the plasma is capable of
But the tracers are a bit unreliable at times
the plasma gun always just shoots wherever you aim it while the tracers just kinda pick a random monster to kill, and not even all the way sometimes
It's not consistent
It's all about practice. Once you learn the tracer patterns how the bfg functions you'll be a beast

consistency for nightmare? Push forward combat, maximize the big ticket items without dilly dallying too much and really optimize how to take out hitscanners without taking return damage. Plan out a route.

What are your guys thoughts on hitscanners in general? Do you think they are a good gameplay mechanic, as they force you to target them first because you cannot dodge their bullets? Or do you find it more annoying and would rather they fire projectiles?

That's one of the reasons I like brutal doom, they actually fire bullets you can dodge
it isn't like a shotgun with random spread. the bfg spread is constant. And with central limit theorem, bfg damage is surprisingly consistent

nope. Everything except zombies, wolfenstein ss, spiderdemons and cybers. doomwiki has a table of probabilities on there
They can force to prioritize one section of the map during a fight forcing you to quickly think on your feet while being engaged by other enemies for one this also works if they're used as snipers and forces you to really learn the lay of the map / arena fast

each monster is a tool and can be placed well or poorly. "Inherently" none are better or worse than others for mapmaking. Sure, hell knights are easier to use than a spiderdemon but both can be used well

Brutal doom converts the hitscans into projectiles and you still get hit a lot
Honestly BD doesn't seem to provide any challenge except for the realism difficulties

You have to change maps before it starts changing unless you turn on Content Locust
It normally tries to build up what weapons you get vs how tough the enemies are getting. Content Locust unbalances the randomizer.
