sunlust is a very fun wad from what I've played, my elder brother who's been dooming a bit recently played it on HNTR.. I tried some of the fights and they still are really fun even when they are way easier
the difficulty balancing definitely is good
Doom has much more rng and organic encounters. You have to be much more on your toes to react, and make broad tactical decisions
And people like ribbiks and danne are very good at making difficult fights
Yeah sunlust on lower difficulties is very fun and engaging
Hmp was the intended baseline difficulty (says so in the text file)

The rest of us who've played through Ribbiks syllabus atleast knew what to expect going into Sunlust. Stardate 20X6, Swim with the whales etc. The start is a bit tricky but not the best indication where it'll end up by 30 🙂

I don't understand people who complain that things are too hard when there's a literal difficulty selection screen

Alot of people aren't used to the concept of practice runs I feel
Some really tough maps I'd be up to 30 50 practice runs
This type of mindset is set by people who say "saving means you're bad" or "UV is the only way to play"
Uv plus fast syringe map 3 took me around 45

I wish boom sourceports would add a checkpoints feature

It doesn't mean you're bad and it isn't the only way to play. I'd just suggest that if you want to increase your skill level. It has nothing to do with having fun though

I feel like having a checkpoints system would be redundant with the save menu, unless you remove the save featire entirely for the checkpoint system

There are some maps ive played that have checkpoints
you can either just let them savescum if they want, but in your readme or on the forum where you post the wad, you tell them not to do so

if you're a doomgod you can do it in one segment, and if you are a normal player UV is now a lot more fair

I recently played hurt.. it's gigantic. Easily done no saves but one of the issues is low enemy count during fights in huge arenas. You want to make sure you don't do something like that just to sandbag your map and make it easier. It takes away from the size and scope honestly

Don't be harsh on yourself, you'll learn very quickly
There are a bunch of great tutorials online for that
DavidXNewton has some videos on the basics of mapping
Chubzdoomer has some GZDoom related tutorials
they make good videos
Check points remove agency from the player. They can be good to have in massive gzdoom sets with things like cut scenes or boss fights but generally I wouldn't have them
I wouldn't use checkpoints in a 20 minute map obviously but If I had a map that's over an hour long it's kind of a necessity
There's already a mechanic for breaking up long maps
The save button 
Auto saves need to be there for a reason
And not force the player into a bad save state
Yeah that's the point, instead of the player saving in a random spot you can have a strategically placed checkpoint
Strategically placed check points can still fuck the player over. Force them to save on 2 hp
At the end of the day more player agency is generally a good thing. I'd rather let players make bad decisions but make it themselves than force them to make what I think is a good decision
well nothing is forcing them to not save if there are checkpoints in the map
a lot of GZDoom maps already do this
if you don't like the checkpoints you can just save
but if you want to play it like the creator intended you save
it's up to the player
I've yet to meet a mapper who has any opinion on when you should save specifically in their maps (outside of general advice)
My maps usually are split into multiple parts or stages
each stage ends with a big fight and after that you have get a bunch of resources and have less monsters for a while
I think having checkpoints in these safe spaces would be great
Well then you can add them into your maps
it's a great format and has a lot of great features
the biggest upsides are how easy it is to use, and more importantly how it remains close to original doom gameplay

The thing is with gzdoom is you can make it feel pretty vanilla adjacent if you want. Just takes a bit of messing around with the settings

Yeah!! It took alot of work to get it there I mean because the default settings but you can adjust everything. I mean even Nash gore is adjustable to a level where it's just a tiny bit more blood. I like having those options

widescreen too if you're into that. can't figure out how to do strafe on(for sr50) on woof though and how to get my reticle back. it doesn't seem to allow sr50 on controller if you use analog turning. If it's binary turning(as if you were using arrow keys, then it would accept it. I mapped my dpad to be binary turning buttons so I can still sr50. It's more awkward than it was on eternity but that and reticle are pretty small things to be fair

you don't really need a crosshair in classic Doom since your weapon is centered anyway

The only Enemy's I've really had trouble with in doom 1 is the shotgun guys and the giant rocket demon
every time I try to open EOA ETERNAL, it doesnt work and doesn't let you enter any levels

I can help a little bit but not too much, since I'm on a mac and I have a launcher that comes with GZDoom so I don't have to use ZDL which is really shitty

Foxtrot uses Hellomemy's version of EOAE, which includes a sprite fix of the chaingun shield and inckuded the Sentinel Hammer
Also I'm pretty sure there are also a few other sprite changes regarding mod swaps

iirc PBeGood4 recommeneded qzdl as an alternative to ZDL
small thing I noticed for WOOF!: the ssg "reloads" even when you run out of ammo.
Hey all, apologies if this is a really dumb question, but I'm curious if it's still recommended to go for one of the source ports of classic Doom (Doom II in my case) instead of just using the version from Steam. I know that at one point it was recommended to tweak the Steam Dosbox settings, but it seems to work pretty well out of the box for me (an admitted complete newbie). If I'm just trying to run vanilla Doom II, is there any reason to dig deeper?
if you just want to try out classic doom the steam version (especially the unity port) will fit all your needs
if you want either more modern features, or the opposite, a more purist experience then source ports are a good option

You buy classic doom on steam. It used to just give you the old version but now it includes the old version and the unity port.

It's a nice compromise to make a playable steam version or else you just get the advise to buy it on steam then use a source port. Now it's you're receiving a playable version that is a bit different from vanilla with extra content and then get a source port and expand your doom mind 🙂

Let me rephrase that. Unity is decent for new players but I wouldn't stick to it because of the wide screen resolution issue and the crashing issue when playing nightmare. The add on are a nice taste of what limit removing has to offer but they could be something added more often. I'd love to see Japanese community project or even tangerine on unity

Im sure add-ons aren't that straightforward to decide depending where the textures/music are taken. Most of the picks to this point looking at the creators are pretty safe. Esselfortium/Ralphis/Rottking/Xaser/Jimmy etc.
Well for some add ons they have replaced some midis with base doom 1 and 2 midis
Reminder: Unity is made for beginners, ofc you're not gonna use it if you dive deep into the doom rabbit hole, but for the average person its perfect

As of now only 0.01 percent of people have completed unity nightmare on console. And I feel map 29 is the reason

I vastly prefer GZDoom, freelook isn't as bad as some people make it
Freelook breaks alot of wads.
Also drastically changes movement skill / target acquisition which is why you can't submit demos with freelook

I can kinda understand but my favorite thing in FPS are strafing around an area looking and shooting in every direction
Movement and pace are a big part of why I enjoy FPS and I think freelook is better for me there
I always say this but man if you're having a blast fuck what people think is the right way to play doom. As long as you're having fun that's what matters

and you just get e3m9 which is just e3m1 but with a few differences
as a matter of fact, I think e3m9 shouldve been e3m1, because e3m1 is very short, and you can just make a different level for e3m9
maybe the cyberdemon part could be replaced with a cacodemon on easy (ITYTD and NTR), a baron of hell on normal (HMP), and keep the cyberdemon on hard (UV and NM)
also, missed opportunity to add doom 2 monsters to ultimate doom (or at lease just E4)

Only due to the spawn point not being set to the location of the cube target when the spawn function is called. Defaults to 0,0, which is the map origin. Just so happens to be out of bounds.

Well situation is key. Say you have a ledge with three archies you need to rush rocket but at the same time the base floor gives you a imp manc horde. You have seconds to rush forward shoot the rockets and get theArchie's before a zap and you need to rush enough where the lock on targets them and not the shit storm coming. That's just one example but you know what I mean

more notes on WOOF!: it's extremely optimized. Even the largest maps that would grind eternity to a halt from AA or eviternity have WOOF still running at a normal framerate.

MBF ported to modern software
Although prboom+ and dsda-doom is better
some highlights so far: runs well(in terms of frames). It's kinda dark. Widescreen. Stats screen. controller compatable. has comp levels from vanilla to mbf21. It picks automatically which vanilla to use. idk how or even if it will ever use comp level 4.
imo really good source port but it's not very vanilla
it's not allowed in speedruns for that reason
My problem with woof is that there isnt an always run option

GZDoom, perfect for modding or just general casual play if you don't really care about super accurate vanilla compatibility(Also has great controller support, if you're into that)
Woof! and DSDA-Doom currently stand out to be the most two popular Boom-based sourceports if my memory serves correctly
Eternity Engine is a whole new sourceport by itself because it uses Eternity Definition Files, but imagine it as a mix between a Boom and ZDoom sourceport
it has UDMF support and all that jazz that ZDoom has(Albeit it's more limited than ZDoom) but it's more close to vanilla than ZDoom is
Controller support for EE is also pretty good
I still have a weirdly awkward time disabling mouselook in gz goom. I turn it off and all it does is recenter the view
if you disable freelook in gzdoom it should just snap you back to mouselook which is just side to side

CL2 is for Doom II, CL3 is for Ultimate Doom

Great for mods, a lot of options to play around with, works great for Heretic and Hexen, and it's not hard to install. Not ideal if you're a giga nerd who cares about vanilla accuracy and all that though.
in cl3, you can play episode 4 of DOOM, lost souls bounce on floors(still not ceilings), and boss deaths are handled more properly. Mostly the lost soul stuff

I play eternal on controller too. Was one of the top console players. Controller does work but it is definitely clunky. Did mostly battlemode. MMAFRO did speedruns for controller

hell, I've found switch players who can quickswap PB + RL consistently with weapon wheel

Doomrunner seems very interesting. It has much more customisation than ZDL, but again, its targeted to zdoom ports and lacks many features boom ports need
Imo there should be an all in one launcher
You tell it what sort of engine you have on a drop down list
And it sets up checkboxes and settings and other features for that engine
Thats what I want to do after I finish the dsda-launcher. It will be a fork of the previous, but, depending on the source port you choose, it will give you different options
But for now, I think doomrunner is very good
I tried it, and if you are using zdoom or derivatives, you should definitely start using it
