Ive played "Doom+" in HDest, which I think uses the map extensions from Maps of Chaos, but doesn't go as overboard on the monster count. I really liked some of the additional rooms that extended the vanilla maps.
I'm a little disappointed in it so far. I thought all the maps would have greatly redesigned rooms, like Entryway did
but the most I get is a few extra rooms, especially at the beginning outside (which I feel is pointless). Otherwise it just adds enemies, which range from tasteful additions that spice things up well, to TNT hitscanner fetish
Maps of Chaos actually has less enemies than Doom 2 in Map 8

I am only familiar with Zandronum
there are other multiplayer ports called zdaemon and odamex, but from what ive seen most of the time matches are arranged instead of being spontaneous
sometimes the #community channel shows upcoming events
iโd say zandronum and steam are your best bets but sometimes there are also people active on the other ports

I quit right after getting to the 2nd world, it didn't really mesh with me all too well
theres some things where i'm overrun and im out of ammo so i just gotta use an axe against melee dependant monsters like husk

every action (NULL or not) in a monster are called states, they can have various durations before the next state, and must be assigned to an actor. e.g. the look actions goes on cycle of LOOK1 and LOOK2 calling A_Look code pointer, same can be applied to the walk sequence.

Even if you could scale the image (which you can't in vanilla doom engine), the resolution of the image doesn't change. These are immutable restrictions, unless you specifically add it to a port which is why you can get round this in other ports. Zdoom family ports are the only ones that have texture scaling afaik
prboom and dsda support larger textures (up to 4096 x 4096) but flats are locked at 64 x 64

i remember running into some trouble with bigger sprites where they just clipped off the map so i think its true, maybe it was because of gzdoom but i dont recall exactly which port i used

... I don't think you understand that low resolution textures are usually scaled up in games BECUASE they are smaller in size. They aren't the same canvas size as higher fidelity textures
and DOOM uses a raster type of rendering for sprites and AFAIK only scales based on its 3D location in the world, not to fit a defined size separate from the sprite so making a bigger sprite would actually make the thing bigger even if it's more detailed and higher clarity
you can see that in DOOM 64 where they use bigger sprites for enemies but Doomguy is the same height so they tower above him more

dos doesnt have its own sound system, soundblaster is its own separate card, personally i prefer using a sc55 soundfont

IIRC DOS didn't have a high resolution like 640x480 that could display 256 colors and even if it did, it would have been too render costly to use that mode so all of the sprite and texture assets were designed with the resolution they were working with in mind.
not only that, but if you are trying to take a high resolution sprite and scale it down to fit what a lower resolution sprite's size would display, that defeats the entire purpose of a higher resolution sprite and is just unnecessary computations to do said arbitrary scaling when instead if you are going to lose a lot of pixel quality doing that, you just use a smaller sprite instead.

Doom Legacy supports boom and mbf, which means you can't scale the textures. If you load higher resolution texture they will be bigger not more detailed. You have to scale them to get them to match the original size, something that can only be done (as far as I'm aware) with zdoom family ports. Specifically in the textures lump

There's a jokewad called DooD that basically mirrors everything in Doom - the enemies, the levels, music, etc. Its amusing, and kinda fun to play

I don't even think that is up to debate if we aren't comparing only soundfonts/PC cards. I remember hearing that a lot of Sega Genesis devs didn't have the same music tools as Sega themselves did so they had a more dfficult time optimizing the sound chip.
libadlmidi + dmxopl bank is the goat for me
but yeah i understand why some people only like sc55, it does share the same instruments as microsoft midi
which is probably one of the most common midi synthesizer thingies
gems existed for this purpose though, a lot of american games used it and they had pretty good soundtracks
iirc doom 32x just uses some shitty midi patches for the yamaha chip and the composer didnt bother giving it good instruments

I had basically no expectations for it, I like Brutal Doom for what it is but I'm not some rabid superfan
but HoE uses Brutal Doom's features spectacularly, and it doesn't skim on level design either
it even has a simple but effective plot and sense of progression. It's easily the biggest surprise on my favourites list

but having played it two or three times now, it does NOT gel with with me at all. Could be because I set it to the UV equivalent and it kicked my ass, but the hitscanners felt too overbearing and cheap
ironically, this is a similar complaint I have with map 32 of HoE, which is a wolfenstein tribute. So maybe I just have a bias against Wolfenstein, lol

Going through Sunder now has been an experience but actually a fun one

I didn't LOVE the rough difficulty here, but I did enjoy c-shock 2 more than anything I've played from Ribbicks
except sunlust perhaps, which was coauthored by danne
C-Shock is more forgiving I think
On a pure fight basis it isn't super frustrating or hard imo
That isn't to say multiple maps took me multiple tries
but compared to like sunder map 05 and now sunder map 06, none of the c-shock maps took me that long to finish
I think sunder 05 took me about 40-50 tries
I suppose I concur. I played it for a lot longer than I normally would have
I would never play a longer (if not super long) but tough map like map 4 in a ribbicks wad

I like that map 3 the jungle one a lot but I played it very hecticly

Map 5 and 6 are very interchangeable imo some say 6 is harder but I had more trouble with 5
6 has a rough start but the individual traps are doable
5's hardest fight is actually the ending imo lol
which combined with nerves when you're 50 mins in a run can be a pain to deal with
well, the longer a map is, the harder it is because theres more oppurtunity to make mistakes
even a map like jade earth that is, pound for pound, not very scary, is terrifying when you're an hour and a half into it

that chaingunner fight with the archvile is a scare but I haven't died there
I think thats the first time I consciously infought an arch vile to survive a fight with one
or at least with chaingunners
On the topic of Sunder, a lot of what keeps the frustration in check is the sheer amazement I have with the maps in general. They all look do distinct and cool

considering all the crazy stuff I've played and am playing recently
I do think Sunder's early maps aren't completely out of the ordinary anymore now, but back in 2009 it was incredible
ancient aliens, going down, the Hell on Eart starter pack, auger zenith especially
but they have such a sheer scale and magnitude
sunder doesn't appeal visually in comparison
especially when I'm frustrated playing it

the difficulty in su05 comes mostly from frustrating bullshit tho tbh
It's very platforming heavy with perma death so if you make a slight mistake in movement and fall down it's gg restart
then it also has pain elementals in a huge void like map which means if you shoot them wrong and they dart off into the distance you'll be dealing with a pain elemental out of reach constantly spawning lost souls
I was enjoying a map called brotherhood of ruin lost temple, and then when I fell into lava and died instantly, it completely killed my enjoyment of the map
So you need to kill the pain elementals in such a way they don't fly off into the distance or it's gg
Ok, noted, never play sunder ever in my life
combination of those two things is what made sunder 05 take 40-50 tries

the others don't have this type of gimmick
su04 has crushers that you need to employ

If you play doom on steam (assuming you are using doom+doom2) you can download the mod directly in the game itself (search it up, you will also need to create a Bethesda account), if it's listed (not all custom maps made for doom are available on steam unfortunately) I recommend switching to a sourceport (like dsda doom), and you can get the wad from IDgames or doomworld

Plutonia 2 is a tough cookie

While playing The Inmost Dens, I got hit with the ghost enemy glitch
so the last quarter or so of the level was me trying desperately to find the rocket launcher while pursued by a ghosy zombieman
dang dont think I ever had this happen in Doom on a map it wasnt intended to happen
I play almost exclusively on UZDoom so its fixed there
The only time it can possibly happen is on the kexengine or dsda on the rare occasion I play on those

a step up in difficulty from 07 and 08 but not as bad as 05 or 06

@crystal hill its a fun thought experiment to think what wads have the hardest first 10 maps
scythe/scythe 2 for example have very very easy map 1-10s
hr as well
pl2 and requiem have relatively tough early maps
out of the megawads I've played, Plut 2 might be the king on that front
but then again, I haven't played many wads that are tough but not ridiculously tough lately
those don't seem to win many cacowards

not your sunders or your kaizo mappacks

I actually like pl2 a lot idk how but they really nail the og plut feel

But everything is still fully playable. Thats how I played Plutonia 2 for most of my life

the clear sky and lack of blackness really weakens the atmosphere IMO

I cannot see Comeback in my head except with the black textures everywhere
Comeback is a great opening map
I just replayed it on a whim, with those black textures
it feels like coming back home
I may have already said this before, but Plut 2 is the wad I am most nostalgic for, except MAYBE Golden Souls 1
its good on its own, but my nostalgic love for it propels it very high up my favourites list
That being said, Black Ice has surpassed Arch Violence as my favourite map from the set
I do remember really liking that one

I do seem to rate atmosphere really highly since all my S rank graded maps ooze atmosphere
