what annoys me the most is mods applying modern rendering tech to og doom, the original had chunky textures and graphics, but it also had talented artists making it a whole artstyle, adding normalmapping and modern lighting to it makes it look like a poor modern game, dilutes the style

besides playing stuff without mods on a proper compatability sourceport makes your achievements feel better
like, even tho I aint submitting my runs, since they arent good times, to dsda, but knowing that they could be and would be accepted makes completing a map on NM100S for example feel like a much bigger achievement

honestly even the effective weapons against them take slightly too long to kill
i feel like they were way easier to kill in doom 1
their stats are identical. The only difference is that in in -complevel 2 (what is used usually for vanilla doom2), they won't ever bounce. On other used comp levels, including vanilla doom1, they bounce off floors. In mbf21, they bounce off ceilings
love the eviternity lost souls with half hp
lost souls in doom 1 are usually way more annoying though, no pain elementals means, they are usually placed in abundance
with pain elementals theres usually less manually placed ones
so you can avoid a lot of them by turning the faucet off as soon as you see it
I remember them being way worse in d2 when I did nightmare100s

Not that I know of, but you can run multiple instances and connect them all to a single locally hosted server to get them in the same game. The tricky part would be getting them to all use different input methods.
there's some super esoteric infighting stuff. on cl0 or 1, maybe both, enemies can in-fight themselves with barrels and pinkies have hitscan melee. Decino did a video on 'em. 0 and 1 are super rare and honestly more of a history thing. It's 2 for doom2 vanilla. 3 for doom1 vanilla, 9 for boom, 11 for mbf, 21 for mbf21 and you'll never use the others unless it's some really niche reason like a year-one boom wad

okay gang bit of an odd ask but are there any epileptic or otherwise photosensitive people here who play classic, especially on gzdoom? i’ve been struggling with photosensitivity that’s slowly been getting worse for a bit and it is now bad enough that i can’t play without feeling sick. i’ve turned off the pickup and blood flashes but not sure what to do about the invulnerability effect fading for example

I did prefer the design of the first as well personally. It was very unique and different from anything else, but Sigil 2 looks like any other mod, it's just that it was built by JR that it's become popular.

Not 100% sure if this is the place to ask...but what would be the best source port for massive maps like slaughterfest maps with LOADS of monsters?
I've tried Gzdoom, and anything over...10-15k monsters in a room drops me down to sub 10 fps.
There was one map I tried with around 40k in a room, that dropped me down to about .5 fps.

he gets it tested in dsda/prboom. but for his own testing he uses gzdoom
this is because gzdoom doesn't use reject tables. the only reason things like prboom can handle 15k+ enemies is because of the reject table (essentially telling the engine to ignore these elements)
there's an 80k monter map and the only reason it runs in any port is because of a highly customise reject table. like manually crafted
sunder actually uses that as well for map ... 15?

Problem with Gzdoom is if I load a map that has 3-4k enemies all active, I get half a frame per second. While other maps I've loaded with 60-70k enemies, I can run just fine. For slaughter maps it's hit or miss.
Guess I either get playability or I get low fps and pk3 support. Seems there's no middle ground source port I've found yet.
Even with as beefy of a pc as mine, I think it just boils down to the way the source port handles things.

Sometimes I just wanna go in and mow down demons. It's therapeutic, so I use a pk3 that makes my chain gun shoot a shit ton of bullets in a big circle on screen. So if I can load that pk3 into a source port that will support stuff with 60-70k monsters in the map that's playable fps... Then I'd be golden. If there's another way to mod the chain gun without a pk3 file.. Then I'd be golden.
Maybe someone knows a different solution

also gzdoom can support much bigger maps because udmf has no linedef limit

I can run Sunder on Gzdoom just fine, it's because the 6k+ maps have monsters that aren't all active at once.
But once I get into a map where it's 4k-6k+ of active monsters in one giant room, Gzdoom bogs down, while PrBoom can play those same maps for me with 200-250+ FPS
what map are you playing
because it's probably not made for gzdoom then
keep in mind gzdoom adds dynamic lights to every projectile if you have lights.pk3 enabled
but if you're playing something like okuplok on gzdoom, well that's on you lol

there's a reason different ports exist, they all have different feature sets and use cases. dsda doom can handly 40k enemies in one map, gzdoom can handle portals, models and 3d floors. you pick the one whose features match what you want to make and use it
but don't assume just because one port can do something, another one can do it equally

yes gzdoom is "advanced", but that comes at a cost. and it's still bound by a lot of backwards compatibility to run vanilla/boom stuff
which prevents it from being fully modernised
I figured, "I have a beefy as hell computer, I should be able to run everything"
hopefully something that vkdoom will fix
gzdoom is still largely single core
so modern cpus don't get properly utilised.
and it doesn't offload much to the gpu in a normal doom map. a map designed around gpu usage however ... well then you can extract more performance. converting geometry to models moves that element to the gpu and helps free up the cpu bottleneck
i have been finding out though that gzdoom's VRAM usage is pretty horrendous, especially with big textures
but again, that's on me to manage
I remember reading somewhere that because of the way Doom has to run in source ports that making it multicore or having paralel computing is basically pointless?

anyway, back to teh original connundrum. you can manipulate how many monsters are active much more carefully in gzdoom with dormant flags and spawning things in
vkdoom dropped backwards compatibility. we found some interesting (and impressive) imrpovements in the shader renderer by stripping things out
like even without the baked lighting it runs better than gzdoom
but it will likely break on vanilla/boom wads (this is known/intentional)
might be some news around that over the new year 😉

createPatch: Unknown patch format TITLEPIC.
SF2023 was a garbage wad full of stolen levels and music
so i'm not surprised it doesn't work
it bears not relation to the original Slaughterfest series
The post I got it from states that the stolen maps were deleted and the music was replaced with uncopyrighted versions.

I'm surprised the Dean hasn't reviewed MyHouse, especially since the map captivated the internet when it was released. But I guess it isn't like a normal Doom map and the experience feels more akin to The Stanley Parable so he may not enjoy it that much despite the insane work put into this map

Slaughterfest was a community project series focusing on massive slaughter maps. There were 4? iterations I think. SF2023 was made by someone trying to cash in on the name and stole a bunch of maps to put in their project.

I remember a friend had that when I was a kid, I was super jealous cause my family only had one computer and my parents didn't like me playing Doom (due to the violence). If I had Doom on SNES I could play it in my room... but after seeing it at a friends house I didn't feel it was worth $70. Second game I got on my PS1 was Doom!!!

you can also grab the contents of the PS1 disc and play it with a source port named PsyDoom.
it basically runs PSX DOOM (and Final DOOM) natively, plus some QoL features

The Trooper's Playground is classic early Doom mod jank, and that's why I love it
Yeah, it's not the greatest, but for the SNES it's RIDICULOUSLY impressive. It was the '90s equivalent to Doom Eternal on Switch, but even more technically impressive than that. Like, it's straight up witchcraft, and Randy Linden ALMOST CERTAINLY sold his soul to the devil himself in order to pull it off.
For sure super impressive! I love seeing the culmination of the work put into the port, and it being at least decent and still very much fun to mess around with
The snes is my favorite old console too so it’s a big thing for me to see one of my favorite games on it is a dream for me

dsda doom is one of the best "classic" source ports imo

But it's not a difficult game either. It's all relative, people consider things difficult because they expect to be able to beat it first try without dying, but that's not a typical realistic play through.

Try OpenGL on DSDA. It's set up to be extremely extremely loyal to software rendering visually, with all the benefits of opengl

Honestly it's one of the easier ones. Get that megaarmor and you'll be ok. There's no need to grab every item on the map. Only the 3 secrets count. So collect only what you need: berserk for health and killing lost souls in the maze and the mega and chaingun

e3 is definitely the best place to start your nightmare gaming. From there e1 has a bunch of hard levels(3, and 9 especially). But e2 is mostly super easy -- except e2m6 is terrible. LIke super hard. then obviously e4 is gonna be terrible too

Anyway, I have a quick question about the Switch ports (also applies to Quake) when I download the addons, they default into the SD card, even if the game itself is in internal memory. Is there any way to change that in the settings? The Switch doesn't let me move that data manually, treats it as updats files.
