Tangentially, I think of all Plutonia-based mappacks, Cydonia captures Plutonia's spirit of 'mean but fun challenge' the best.
Huh, really? I thought Hunted was really fun. But I suppose it's one of the more polarising maps.
I love the gimmick of the Archvile hunting you down in a tight maze but man it’s annoying since there almost nowhere to dodge if it finds you
The trick is abusing the archvile's greatest vulnerability: The fact that it's immobile when attacking.
Oh there's some epic archies based maps out there that put that gimmick to shame
The moment you see an archvile, make your way to a corner and shoot at it until its attack is close to completion, then duck back, reveal yourself again and repeat. A shot from the SSG is highly likely to trigger the pain state, so you can make use of it as you dash towards a corner. Make sure not to stay in cover when it's not attacking or it'll walk straight up to you.
The map gets so much easier once you grok the timing of archvile attacks. Though that alone won't help you with the maps Gougaru is talking about. :-P
i really want to continue plutonia and eventually get thru the whole thing

to improve at the game since up until this point ive been playing on hmp on continuous with a save at the beginning of each map
i have been saving in this playthrough, but i have started every map from pistol start
and ive tried not to save too much
altho ive been saving a ton in this map because it sucks
every other map ive played in plutonia so far has been difficult, but fair

From what I can see, it's possible for monsters to have variable pain state frames but they all have two.

It depends on the monster. revs and viles have long pains and imps have short ones.

is it possible that you're looking at spite frames? cacos have two pain sprites as opposed to one from other monsters(and doomguy)
AFAICT they all have two frames but only caco has two individual sprites for the frames. Though I guess this tells nothing about the tic length.
maybe then one of the frames that's a copy is universally given one or two tics and the other sprite gets the rest of the time. Whatever the case, the actual time frozen is monster dependent

I gave in to curiosity and found out that the actual pain state lengths are all over the place for different monsters.
*_PAIN and *_PAIN2 states where the third slot of each state struct holds the tic count for that state.
So that's 10 tics for revenants and archviles, 4 and 6 for other monsters.

I managed to do a deathless run of Plutonia (non pistol starting) on UV, and I was real proud of that
same with doom II
which now reminds me of when I failed the deathless run at the penultimate level 
I'm not a huge fan of Plutonia 2. I think it's quite decent (and certainly more coherent than PRCP) but I always felt it leans too far into Plutonia's shticks. Not really a sequel to Plutonia as much as a reimagining with its beloved/loathed elements amplified, if that makes sense.
I feel like personally plutonia 2 is known to me as “the same as plutonia but purposely more difficult”

Is there a name for the age-old cheesing strategy of walking into a room, waking up all monsters, walking back out, then repeatedly opening and closing the door until all monsters kill each other?
I feel like it should have a name since it's such a well-known mapping mistake (when the door doesn't lock behind you or the monsters can't open the door to flow out).

I generally call it door fighting or door combat and have seen others refer to it as such
The door fighting I know is more like peekaboo shooting, whereas this one doesn't involve any sort of fighting at all. You just hide and let everything die over time.
more modern mappers prefer switches over doors for this reason
Honestly I wish they kept infighting in Doom Eternal, would have been cool to see people beat the game killing as few demons as possible
Another thing I wish they brought back in Doom Eternal was more thorough ammo management, like I remember in Classic doom I’d find myself thinking “oh crap if I get jumped by demons I’m not gonna have enough bullets to fight them off”
Actual infighting not sets. But I can see why they didn't. Everything would be fighting eachother in 20 seconds

There would have to be a set pain threshold or everything woulf be attacking eachother and you'd be swinging around like an idiot
My speculation is that infighting with be less likely since eternal makes more use of vertically so monsters are less likely to hit each other. it would be a cool experiment but the game isn't designed around it
I have to disagree. Because of the spam attacks in all directions you'd get enemy hits plus large area of effect

why always i get stuck on one or two missions in doom 2 and i just get di anything about it
i started over and now im stuck on the second mission where you get the shotgun. i just dont understand what i gotta do.
Follow where the map leads you until you get the red keycard, then trace back your footsteps to open the red bars and continue from there until you find the blue keycard. Then open the blue door and exit the map.
Many early stock maps boil down to opening doors with keys to reach the exit and incidentally killing monsters along the way.
Beyond general movement skill and monster familiarity, doom2 requires some navigational skill. take note of key doors that you find and refer back to that mental list when you get new keys. That basic lock and key thought process as simple as it seemed helped doom2 be less intimidating for me

I remember playing Overwatch for a while and realized it was always giving me headaches. Had no idea why, until I realized something — every time I looked around, my screen went insanely blurry. Then I immediately realized motion blur was the cause

It's not easy to define "hard" too. Does it count tedious and grindy maps that are doable but not worth the time and effort? (Like UV-maxing nuts.wad) Or RNG-heavy maps few people are willing to try over and over again?

It really was tedious due to pretty much all monsters being spectre variants
if you missed even 1 monster, it could add minutes onto your time
Theoretically, it's not that hard to finish the map without restarting once if you have an infinite amount of time and motivation to play it like a Sunday stroll.
True, the map isn't necessarily hard to finish, just very tedious to get all kills and secrets (mind you there's 23 secrets)

Maybe I'll give it a try too. I'm not too fond of slaughtermaps but I enjoy the 'siege' type of maps popularised by Alien Vendetta where you slowly, piece by piece do away with the monsters.

Well, it's classified as a slaughter wad, however, back when the term was used, it was usually associated with very tough maps
Well, slaughter imo is just high monster count, big arenas where you fight tons of monsters
Example being the final arena of God Machine
Yeah but there are many different types. For example those that take place in wide open arenas where you deal with waves of monsters spawning in. Or the siege type I mentioned where you walk into a giant room with clusters of monsters and have to prioritise the map into different chunks.
Or the more technical ones that are essentially combat puzzles with massive amounts of monsters.
Rush probably fits the Siege type in that case
Rush is also pretty short
There's 12 maps, and they usually take around 5-10 minutes to beat each
(except the last one, which takes over an hour)

To be fair, all the technical ones I've seen appear as set pieces in larger maps rather than standalone ones.
I mean, the maps speak for themselves.
I think Micro Slaughter Community Project is a particularly good example of a mapset packed with technical slaughter fights.

Well, limits that are genuinely annoying have already been removed in most ports.
Visplane limit is an infamous one that makes intricate maps really difficult to port to vanilla Doom.
I thought more of the logical limitations like doors moving sideways or being able to build more than two floors under eachother

in vanilla doom, a yellow skull and card open exactly the same doors. It wasn't until source ports that there were doors that could only be opened by a yellow skull
I like how KDiKDiZD circumvented that by putting invisible barriers in front of doors that instantly and silently lower once the player reaches the correct key.

Brutal Doom is just a mod, not a source port. (It runs on the source port GZDoom.) You can simply not use it when you play Doom.

DSDA has a really nice overlay for kills/items/secrets but otherwise looks just like dos doom(with higher resoultion and better aspect ratio if you prefer). GZdoom also has enough options to make it look like vanilla but dsda has the better overlay and actually emulates vanilla

e2m5 isn't really hard because of monsters, more hard because of navigation and eh map design
i've only played through episode 4 one time (i just recently started playing doom) and e4m2 was SO hard

this is totally unrelated, but im using this thing called dsda-launcher to play. i tried to go to a specific level of doom2 and it wont start... but when i try to start on level 1 it boots up just fine

it doesn't throw an error to my knowledge. what happens when it works is i hit "launch" and the screen goes black for a second, then doom boots up. when it doesn't work, the screen goes black for a second, but doom does not start up it just takes me back to the launcher

thanks for saying this! after checking console i realized it was trying to play a demo file and thats probably what was preventing it from starting.... what's weird though is it had no problem starting the games from the beginning. having the demo file there only effected it when trying to select a level
There were some problems when running demos and trying to warps to levels on prboom+
dsda-doom decided that if you were warping to a level which was not present in the demo, then it would not run

It's hard to overestimate how important launchers are for accessibility, especially when considering that they're one of the more straightforward things to program(I believe it's something something writing a batch file and running the batch at its core). While dos doomers might be comfortable with a command line, I can't imagine players who grew up with Graphic user interfaces like me writing or a text command to play a game
I specifically love dsda-launcher because it does some extra stuff that can't be easily done with the terminal
The launch history is my favorite
But you can always use the shell history. That's what I do. I press C-r, type, say, surge and it brings up gzdoom -iwad iwad/DOOM2.WAD -file Resurge.wad -file mods/levelinfo.pk3.
Not saying launchers aren't useful, just to be clear.

basically, dosbox doom launcher
it is integrated with dosbox, and allows you to select which dos executable you want to use (you could have like a folder with ultimate doom, doom 2, final doom, and boom and whatever others you want) and then you can select parameters and wads, and maybe even select a dehacked file and it would generate the new executable
that way you dont have to go thru the hassle of setting up dosbox
I'd just use chocolate doom in that case tbh

Hey, y'all. I have a question about telefragging. I was explaining to some people how i managed to kill a boss in Dusk by telefragging him, and i mentioned examples of Telefragging in doom. And the question came up whether telefragging is something that delibrately programmed into the game or if it's just something that happens if y'all get what i mean. Like is it a feature you have to put in, or is it just part of how teleporters and hitboxes and stuff works?

If you somehow get stuck inside another enemy, for example if you create a map where you spawn in inside a monster you get stuck instead of it dying

I wasn't prepared for that when i played the level. I teleported, expecting to BFG the cyberdemon, but i turn around and i just see bloody hoofs
E4 was just so painful for me. I'm really bad at games and e4m2 and e4m6 both took me like the better part of a day to finish

I played TNT: Evilution up until map 30 until i got to the Icon of Sin and just quit the game and decided to do something fun instead like ripping my toenails out

Because i haven't actually played Doom II. When i launch Final Doom, it asks me, do you want Final Doom, Plutonia or TNT? I say i want Final Doom and then when it opens Dosbox it loads me into Plutonia

It’s so rememberable in fact that the WAD doom but something is not right (map makers had to make doom 1 by memory) nearly identical to the original
Decino played it and he was shocked because of how accurate it was
yes. You can test this by firing a bfg ball and well... dying. try it with the e2m8 cyber(with idkfa). Makes no difference for single player beyond adding insult to injury after a death
i find ultimate doom in terms of maps forgettable anyways
since this year is doom’s 30th anniversary tho, I might end up doing episode speedruns for the original 3

Boy, ALT sure is something else. I went back to play the secret maps and one of them has this:
||After finding all keys, you use them to enter the final room with mandatory supercharge, invulnerability and blur sphere. The room has ten archviles lined up with a cyberdemon in the front, all have their backs turned. I forgot this was ALT and punched the air to get the cyberdemon to wake up, but I noticed they were in invisible boxes with sound-blocking linedefs. So I pressed the switch right in front of the cyberdemon, which just opened a room full of pathetic zombiemen shooting each other. From there you continue to the actual ending room and the cyberdemon + archviles fight never actually happens. It's not possible to get 100% kills.||
is it possible to make crispy doom save demos to a different folder so that my crispy folder doesnt have 2 pages of demos?

lmao i love watching demos and just sitting in a random part much later in the level and watch the enemies just doing their thing, and then you start to hear firing noises
and then you hear a door open, and you see the guy standing right at the turn in the hallway get shot and then doomguy comes around and starts fucking up all of the demons in there

There's a 'Releases' section on the sidebar. If you click that, it'll take you to the page that lists all released versions, starting from the newest one. (You know it's the newest version if it says 'Latest' next to it.)
If you're using Windows, download the one named like prboom-plus-version-w32.zip under the release of the version you want to get.

IIRC most of that map is optional.
Simply grab the blue key and make haste to the exit. But secrets will make things easier. If you're struggling, I say go ahead and look up where the secrets are on the wiki and try beating the map with them.

Maybe you could try and reroute the location the demos are stored in?
So maybe you make a new folder in the crispy folder
Then you could rewrite the path the demos go to to that folder

I assume you're on windows so I'm not of much help since I use mac, but essentially you want to find the path that leads to the crispy folder, then add the extra folder name at the end before then entering the desired demo name to be recorded?
I'm not totally sure how to explain this without pictures

I use the dsda-launcher which is pretty convenient for recording demos but basically I first have it look for a path for my recorded demos to be stored in
I usually store it in a folder called "Doom Stuff" which has a "demos" folder in it, which also has a "recording" folder in it
The path written out in order to get to that would be Users/(my account name)/Desktop/Doom Stuff/demos/recording/demoname.imp

you have to find the green card (zandronum, woof, zdaemon, odemex) are all ways to play online. doomseeker is a good resource too. If you look those up, you'll find some video guides I'm sure
Just found out classic doom is on EmuVR
download zandronum, which comes with doomseeker. use doomseeker to find servers and join the fun. you can host your own servers through TSPG (the sentinels playground) hosting service
there might be some freedoom servers idk but yeah you gotta use doom2.wad from your steam
freedoom2 resources should theoretically be compatible with doom2 servers but yeah, better to have DOOM2.wad

I kind of quit at map 30 because i was getting frustrated with the Icon of Sin. I was getting really frustrated again today because i fired like 70 rockets at the icon and nothing happened 💢
I guess there's a pretty specific spot you have to stand. Like just on the edge of the stairs and not up against the far back wall?!?!?!?
It's on the third stair. Your rocket lands lower on the icon of sin wall texture than other wads because they're goobers

Excellent design. Like i was firing 70 rockets and wondering how many it would take. So i watched a youtube video and the guy fired 8 rockets and it was done, so i took his cue and stood where he stood and lo and behold, after just a few rockets i got the victory screen

I take credit for most of that and even I say it's fine. I just wish people used it for heavily modified Gameplay or pk3s that require it instead of a general use vanilla but inaccurate

Doom originally supported multimonitor gameplay through the most overkill method possible by using a separate computer for each monitor. Even if you have the hardware, it's a lot of work to set up, but I've always wanted to give it a shot. So today I finally did!

Just played Poison Oak (M32 of Resurgence) and I think it's much better than Poison Ivy II (M23 of SoD). Very spacious and comfortable to play, unlike the maps it's a pastiche of. Even constricted fights like the final fight feel fair and balanced.

What we are trying to create:
When the player is in a really dark place he should get hallucinations like: some acid overlay, some ghosts or flowers should spawn near him, the soundtrack should change and then after staying for really too long he should pass out, the screen should be black, and then he should come back in the same spot near a pool of vomit, and the soundtrack should come back to normal again

Could you make a map that is three different maps depending on which skill you are playing on by having difficulty specific player starts?
not directly. p1 starts ignore difficulty setting(just tested in dbuilder) but is doable with mapping tricks(difficulty dependent lost souls in monster closets triggering linedefs)
you could have the default HMP setup be that one teleporter is blocked so you take the other. But a lost soul on UV/NM in some closet trips a linedef that blocks the HMP teleporter and opens the other. That way, doomguy takes separate teles depending on difficulty at the start. open up fractured worlds in the editor. It uses this technique for difficulty dependent platforming
I think you can have 3 different paths for each difficulty and 2 of them blocked by a decoration thing
Maybe cause your playing with a mod TNTs sucking less

You can literally finish the map in less than 20 seconds which is a godsend because it's like map18 but 1000x worse if you take the normal route
I do think that I should've played this on UV instead of HMP bc I dunno why but I feel underwhelmed
Maybe bc I watched MtPains reviews and say "why there isn't a cyberdemon in map13" or "why isn't there a spider mastermind in map14"
But then I realize, I'm playing on HMP
But tbf I play a mapset on HMP to get a feel of the map, bc if I did it lower I wouldn't feel a challenge or baseline, but if I put it too hard, I wouldn't be familiar with stuff like the map beforehand
ultra violence is sort of the default difficulty. it's what most maps are designed around, just on a basic level. I think it's the difficulty where things are most balanced and ofc you don't get the full experience for most maps and custom wads without it due to different enemy spawns. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself if you think hmp is too easy, if you're experienced with other fps games it probably is.

a lot of ribbiks maps are built around all difficulties really
sunlust recommends people who aren’t confident to try hurt me plenty or even not too rough
but tbf, uv sunlust is designed for those who are pretty experienced at doom in general

if im not mistaken then yes since all sector sounds starts from the vertex of that sector with the lowest index (as indexed in the vertex table), including door sounds. have the door merged with a sector 3km away from the door (with the lowest index far away) then the player wont hear it. this is how silent insta raise bridges is done, so its doable in not just boom or mbf21 or mbf but also vanilla

What id did is a bit complicated. It would've been called an expansion pack, since DLCs been around for about a decade only. But it's a standalone iwad that contains all three levels plus the new one. So it's like "deluxe edition" if that makes sense.
Yeah, it may be more fun to play it coop than solo.

No Rest For the Living is pretty decent
the only thing that might bug you is the secret hunting, some maps have ridiculous secrets
I've played through crumpets casually twice now and I can happily say that the first couple levels don't actually seem so bad, the last levels on the other hand are quite menacing

For me the e3m8 map felt like an arena which makes sense
While the e2m8 seems to look like the top floor for tower of babel which would make sense
Its weird how shit bosses is almost a legit tradition for id software
Atleast the modern boss fight look like an actual boss fight
the cyber or spooderdemon might not be great boss enemies(without some more specific level design at least), they're still great monsters
Episode 2 is my favourite episode in Ultimate Doom
it has quite a bit of cool levels, like Containment Area, Command Center, Refinery, Spawning Vats and especially Tower Of Babel
They can be threatening enemies if they are done right
But their mechanics are so easy to counter and how the player moves so fast to the point it reduces it
Cyberdemon with hordes of enemies especially with archvile can be a challenge

If i have time to learn doom builder i would create plutonia 2.0

A cyberdemon in a cramped space for me is genuinely frightening
I don't know where I'd place a spider mastermind, but a greatly placed arachnotron will give a run for your money
Using the spiderdemon is hard to get right, but it works the best as a central turret that oversees a large portion of the map, forcing you to take cover in specific points.
In my experience at least.

I was thinking of spidermastermind with chaingunners but i realize plutonia already did that
I always like the hell knight design in classic doom
Basically just a reskin for baron of hell
But the color palette makes it look like an actual goat (If you wanna imagine it, gladiator is already the design)
Baron of hell color looks like an actual hell goat so it makes sense it would be present in hell world
While hell knight is basically the opposite of baron of hell
I like fighting hellknight hordes. Never understood the hate
Felt like balanced version of baron of hell
To the point that getting damaged by its attack is your own fault

I think it is a unique take on tricks and traps but it does feel like it was being more itself than being strict on it
The start was alright, the ending was great
Just feels a bit more novice but that's just me
Tricks and Traps is one of my favorite maps in Doom 2 so maybe I sound a bit more critical on it

Yeah JPCP Map10, you're one of the worst maps I played atm (maybe the second or third time might not be that bad)
Somehow a Doom map really angered me , I respect it but damn it genuinely gotten me pissed the whole time
It isn't easy to make that trap go work easily

Secrets are weird, some are laughably obvious, and some are hidden in a dumb way that I don't think people would realistically find on their first try

It's not terrible but it drained me, and it's not hard either

UV+ in the Unity port refers to UV with fast monsters and coop monsters.
It's not an established term in the community, however.
Originally uv plus was just a name for solo net
I sometimes think uv plus being between uv and nightmare where its still uv but the monsters seems to be on nightmare
Nightmare monsters aren't just fast monsters; they also have an instant reaction time.
When i look onto it with e1m8, i found the pinkies and spectres being fast like in nightmare but still keeps the uv feeling (i think)

I usually cannot tell if uv and nightmare have same monster counts in some levels since i never play nightmare anyways lol
Nightmare is essentially
- UV monster and item placement
- Fast monsters
- Instantly reacting monsters
- Respawning monsters
- Double ammo pickup
- No cheats (can be overridden in some source ports)
An advantage the instant reaction provides is that as long as ranged monsters can see you, they remain stationary as they're constantly shooting at you. This makes archviles very easy to deal with. The cyberdemon becomes a death turret that continuously spews rockets but if you can circlestrafe around it, it's trivial to take it down since it won't move around.
Hitscan monsters become your worst enemy though.

I can see why some people like doom 2 rather than doom 1 in terms of creating maps with default textures
Nightmare requires a much different playing style than the other skill levels that I find too stressful myself.
The additional textures, monster and the addition for super shotgun really helps

Nightmare makes you play like your playing cod instead of classic doom style

I'm not a speed runner. But after watching speed run videos I was able to copy the pathing enough to complete it. It really is speed running for the most part or at least knowing the fastest way to complete the map

Played with corruption cards. One card was a pod that continuesly released chaingunners somewhere in the level until you found and destroyed the pod

Honestly the first few stages of Plutonia wasn't very fun for me
But it is a skill issue
plutonia sucks imo
on doomseeker, zandronum's application to run multiplayer servers, you click on the servers and they automatically show you the list of the mods with an "install" button

It does, at least I will play it with final Doomer to somewhat improve the experience, but I'll be honest me going through JPCP even with it's weapons tends to be difficult at times
I fear of what Plutonia has, I didn't like it's first few levels, imagine the rest, easy filtering on HMP for me

If JPCP is harder and I'm tolerant of it more than Plutonia, maybe it's all in my head and can actually best Plutonia with some trial and error
