Personally used to be obsessed with fast but not anymore. Used to do alot of fast and fast uv plus. ( being the first person to do uv plus fast sigil so I have experience) fast forces alot of passive play and really effects movement. I'd always suggest a harder wad rather than playing fast these days
I should mention that before doing solo net you should playthrough the wad and see if it's balanced or if the map maker thought about it. Rather than just tossing in a cyber demon or 3. Some are balanced well and increase difficulty while others just bog down the map

A lot of people hate it when there's lack of health, either a shit ton of hiscanners or cyberdemons

You can set items to spawn for multiplayer, you cannot set them to spawn specifically when there are 2 or 3 or 4 players
My current solution is to isolate each player start and make special areas that can only be accessed in coop

TNT is absolutely dreadful. I know this sounds awful, but most people I've seen who prefer it usually have issues with revs and archies.

80% of the time the arch vile was too busy infighting to zap me
Often times, the fulfillment will be finding ways to mitigate that percentage

e1m3 was more skill so it was eh, despite the crushing deaths I got near the exit door
I can either get good rng with monsters in toxic room or just get a dead run or miss the exit switch for e1m1, or not get a fast wobble or miss the angle of the void glide by a single tic and either die or not propel myself into the void, not to mention either undershooting or overshooting the void switch press in e2m6
But for some reason I still keep going back to e2m6, idk the void glide is just so fun to do
e2m6 would be faster if runners used the secret exit

anyway, if a sleeping enemy is blind or not in an "ambush" state, then yes
in an ambush state enemies will automatically wake up if there is any line of sight between you and them even if they face the other direction

kinda. Levels are not usually built around it but enemies do have a cone of awareness in front of them and sound propagation is limited by walls and the like. There are some niche instances where you can silently trigger shootable switches by using the delay between the sound and the actual weapon attack, or where you can prefire bfg/rockets before enemies are aware before the full barrage unloads on the enemy the moment they see you. So in the majority of cases, no: levels are not designed for it. But there are rare times where you can "surprise" enemies or keep them unaware longer than you might expect.

don't see why not -- though bear in mind that it'll be harder in coop. In solo, you can make a save after 35 or so rockets so you are confident that you don't kill him with stronger weapons

well, use berserk for some parts of the map

and if you still struggle just skip the map, barrels o fun is sandy’s worst map

i’d go as far to say that barrels o fun is one of the worst maps in doom II

I don't know why it took me this long to try wads outside commercial Doom, but Revilution is great so far. What's the general opinion on the Plutonia sequels? Might try those next.
plut2 is generally regarded as quite good. plut3 is just a few nonsense levels made by a young kid who liked plutonia and is not regarded as good. There is also plutonia revisited which I think is pretty decent as well. There are no sequels made by plutonia's developers themselves. I do personally encourage you to try stuff that isn't plutonia themed as well(even though plut is great), but also play what you like
if you really like plutonia, you should also consider everything Josh Sealy has made, as well as Ribbiks' Crumpets pwad. Sealy wears his plutonia inspiration on his sleave, and crumpets is just in my mind, an extension of plutonia but with Ribbiks distinctive style and a good intro to ribbiks(this is one of his easier sets and he makes harder levels usually

You could go for a wad that’s completely different in aesthetics but only a step up from difficulty compared to plutonia

It always floors me that Doom was made in less than a year because it has such an impressively fine-tuned game feel. I've been rediscovering some 90s favorites with my older kid, and even most of the good ones feel at least a bit dated in a way that Doom just doesn't.

You know what's kind of weird though? When I step back and think about Doom as a dad, it's violent as hell. But when actually playing it, the gore doesn't even register. It's just a high speed strategic spatial puzzle.

Once you open it, it just does not register

Honestly, one of the things I really like about Doom is that it's full of hacks and stuff just thrown in which unexpectedly turned out to be incredibly fruitful for fanmade content.
It's a very idiosyncratic game that lends itself to abuse of its quirks and that's one of its charms. Newer games feel much more sterile and bland in comparison.
To give a (more intentional than incidental) example, Tom Hall, with his signature "gameplay over aesthetics" focus, insisted that teleporters be added to the game and fought the rest of the team over it, who thought it was too out of place. In the end, Tom won and it was a throw-in feature. Doom itself wouldn't be too different without teleporters (they were mainly used for technical convenience) but I can't imagine how modern maps would be without teleporters.
The more I learn about Doom's eccentric details, the more I love it.

i actually think ultimate doom has a better soundtrack compared to doom II. Since with Doom II it constantly overuses blues to the point it kinda annoys me. Plus it’s less adrenaline inducing

Ultimate Doom does have a lot of stolen riffs and it overuses a lot of songs, so I get why it’s least preferred

i played plutonia and only got angry zero times
the difficulty of plutonia is overestimated relative to other wads since far more inexperienced players play it relative to other stuff.

TNT is one of those wads that would have been better as a 12 map wad. something that ends on a "THE END" map where all you can do is run around and it has no exit.

So anagnorisis and dehydration are lengthy for different reasons
Dehydration is, as its name implies, a grind, a drought. It is a grueling hour long slog by design with few arena fights. It's all about tredging forward. I think it's good and one of the few maps to accomplish that gameplay style well. Gougaru hates it though. Anagnorisis is a massive massive level with a dozen secrets(and real secrets. not double counted ones) that opens up in many different ways depending on the order you tackle weapons and keys that culminates in a mountain climb into a central core arena fight

It's not hard at all the fights give you plenty of room even the last one if you rush one side first. The issue is the fights are paint dry boring with long pauses of walking around doing nothing hitting switches for 9 minutes and then another fight with 5 enemies and repeat for an hour. Pure ass crack
The only map I think that does the "long map with lighter fights" really well is Misri Halek.

Hi, in GZDoom i have my .zds files in ~/.config/gzdoom which is the default directory. However, when i open GZDoom with classic doom, it says i have no save files

And do you have a save_dir value set in gzdoom.ini?
If you did update it recently and haven't changed your save destination, it's most likely because of the new structuring GZDoom uses for separating savegames by iwads. eg my save_dir is ~/.config/gzdoom/saves, which means that if I save a game on DOOM2.WAD, it gets saved in ~/.config/gzdoom/saves/doom.id.doom2.commercial.

the platform doesn't lower. Instead, another step rises to help you up. if multiple of the final arachnotrons are killed simultaneously, they all trigger the step to rise. But if that happens, it's too high to climb.

doing some testing, the map won't break when they die on the same frame. It breaks if there is a very slight delay. I honestly couldn't say why. Maybe there is a delay between when the arachno is considered dead and when the tag 667 is called
Is it just me or is the icon of sin really hard to kill, I can never tell if my rockets are actually doing damage, if I have to hit specifically the Brain or if I can hit just right above it and the explosion will still damage him
It's hard, but with practice the timing intuitively clicks and becomes easy

Now, I learned somewhere down the line that Classic Doom’s larger demons were sculpted before they were turned into sprites, like the Spider Mastermind, Mancubus, Barons of Hell, and presumably the Cyberdemon. What I wonder (but somehow doubt) is if the Cacodemons were sculpted beforehand
Slade 3 is what you use to import and export textures, but you also need any photo editing application to modify the sprites
One photo editing app that I found to be great for pixel art (and is also free) is paint NET

Considering pretty much all of Classic Dooms sounds are stock sounds that are free to use. It probably came from there
Now that I think about it. I’m pretty sure all of Classic Dooms sounds aren’t made originally. The sound effects are taken from a sound library and the soundtrack is just riffs from Metallica and Slayer songs
They do take a lot of metal riffs from the era but not all of it is just ripped, plus some of the much more mundane sound effects like picking up health and ammo is theorized to have been made by Bobby himself

I'm struggling to find a consistent route in getting secrets and kills, since all the monsters are invisible. Plus ammo management is crucial to getting a good time, and basically majority of weapons are behind secrets.
I've been thinking of using berserk for a lot of the enemies since you can easily get it at the start, and then trying to go for basically all the keys and most of the weapons. Other than that, coming up with a strat has been mostly alien since i'm the only person to ever do something as stupid as this

local only on steam, but with woof, zandronum, odemax, zdaemon, you can play multiplayer online. All those ports are free granted that you have the doom iwad which you do if you have the game on steam

under 1 hour for casual was impressive for me (when I mean casual, I do save for some parts)
The only problem with this map is that I feel as if there will be some runs where I have all secrets and then some monsters that have ran off and hidden
and that does become a big problem, since you can’t hear their roaming sound
so in other words, if I miss a monster or two in the final minutes of the run, im screwed
it’s most likely a restart
completing this map on uv-max speedrun would be a very impressive milestone for me
Hey guys I'm introducing a friend to old doom and we are playing through the games based on release date with the exception of episode 4 which we did first. After we finish Plutonia we are going to start playing community wads so he can see the progression of level design. I was wondering if any of you had a recommended list of wads starting with older releases going up to the more modern spectacular stuff.
Momento Mori, alien vendetta, scythe2, speed of doom, heartland/valiant(anything by skillsaw really), sunlust(haste is probably better for such a huge project cuz sunlust is long), fractured worlds. These are ordered by release date, and they also happen to be approximately ordered by difficulty

There really is so much new content though. I like sunlust and fractured worlds and flotsam and haste, but lots of people don't. They play stuff like pirate doom or enter the mapwich. so the actual games have very limited story. There is a small amount in handbooks and stuff. Ignore the snes manual though. Be careful about a lot of lore youtubers though. They might yaknow, make stuff up. Secrets are not required for achievements. Finding them sometimes gives you helpful items though.
enabling cheats disables achievements. However, opening a new game or loading a save where cheats are inactive will re-enable achievements

the doomwiki has locations for the bfg for every level. But like they said, map08, 09, 10,11,12,13,15,16,17,18,20,23,24,27,28,30, 31,32 are the levels with bfg by my memory

Yes, though it's essentially a fleshed out version of the original story
Plutonias story is still the best
not if you don't pay attention 😎 doom2016 almost barely makes sense but doom eternal lore is a mess
so I should just play the end of each episode to get the scenes then jump to the next game?
You can read the text on Doom Wiki without bothering to play.
I don't think anyone plays Doom for the plot.
Then again, people made films and cartoons of games like Tetris and Pac-Man, so what do I know.

Secrets can be used in more creative ways, like offering shortcuts or letting you take down monsters in a strategic position in advance to make a future fight easier.

Hey I'm in E1 M4 and i accidentally used both the bio suits and i can't figure out how to get to the yellow key. Any pointers?
You might just have to make a run for it if you wasted both rad suits
Yea but the prob is i know i have to get ver the nukage pool and like get on this longer but the only way to do that would to get in and i keep dying
you don't need any rad suits for the yellow key lol. It's accessed through the maze(through the blue door). If you insist however, it is possible to jump to a ledge on the wall near the YK over the sludge. it's hard jump but doable

Old Doom games are stored in a .WAD file type. So whenever someone asks about WADs there talking about any good custom level packs or mods to play
Or at least the assets: sprites, text, textures,levels, sounds, music. The executable is not part of the wad

I think I can very likely aim for sub 30
I have a specific route that I have very nearly memorised
I just need to be certain every enemy is killed in the area
because if I miss a couple then it’s most likely a reset
I wonder if notes would help, saying how many kills you need per section
I think it would be cool to be able to stick and write notes to yourself on the walls of maps.

Don Ivan Punchatz created alot of Sci fi and movie art. Not sure about dungeons and dragons. His son helped create some classic demon models as well

Early in development they toyed with the idea of an Alien tie-in but dropped it for the sake of creative freedom
Maybe I'm mixing it up where they took the first edition Astral Dreadnought head as inspiration for the Cacodemon
The inspiration for doom came from a botched dnd game the id crew played where they unleashed hell through a gate/portal

anyways, just gonna bring up that sub 30 is 100% possible
I did my first attempt and died around 14 minutes, and I was well over halfway done (kills and secrets)

I mean, tbf they would never be able to tell
It's not like I need to even use doomwiki at this point
i've memorised where all the linedefs are that I need to cross, as well as all the 23 secrets in the level
since in Comatose, over half the enemies are ambush, and they teleport in once a linedef has been crossed
so it's definitely important to be aware of the linedefs in the case of 100% kills
Oh yeah, forgot to mention I have started attempts for this run
I meant for during practice so that when you do the Speedrun you turn the corners and out of instinct remember the notes and do the stuff
oh, already did that i suppose, just without the notes being stuck
