theres a game similar to doom on roblox. Its called hellreaver arena. There might b more i dunno

ornate vortex

uv-fast seems interesting and I wanna try it out at some point

#

I was thinking since next year is doom's 30th year anniversary, I might speedrun through some id levels

and idk whether uv-fast would be suitable there or in other wads

dapper flint
#

More ammo needed for more monsters

#

Not at all

#

The exact opposite which is why people do it

#

Map 22 uv plus plutonia and get back to me

dapper flint
#

I should mention that before doing solo net you should playthrough the wad and see if it's balanced or if the map maker thought about it. Rather than just tossing in a cyber demon or 3. Some are balanced well and increase difficulty while others just bog down the map

ornate vortex
#

Please test your maps to see if it's balanced

#

A lot of people hate it when there's lack of health, either a shit ton of hiscanners or cyberdemons

#

Idk, whenever someone throws tons of chaingunners with no health pickups, it annoys me

#

I basically groan at it

azure nimbus
#

idk if playtesting coop even works cuz mapmakers don't know how many you'll play with

pearl osprey
#

^

#

This is a problem I faced creating maps

#

You can set items to spawn for multiplayer, you cannot set them to spawn specifically when there are 2 or 3 or 4 players

#

My current solution is to isolate each player start and make special areas that can only be accessed in coop

#

Although it is very tedious

finite crag
#

I’ve got that music from map 10 or 11 of Doom 2 stuck in my head. The one that sounds remarkably like an old Slayer song.

#

ah yes I still have my 18.83 speedrun on it

#

it's such a dumb run that I'm not even going to submit it to DSDA

#

i still love it to death tho

dapper flint
#

Co op spawns like I mentioned are hit or miss. I suggest you test the map before deciding to do the wad anyways. Some are fantastic like btsx and eviternity some not so much

finite crag
#

So I’m halfway through Doom 2. Are the new demons special appearance only or something? Haven’t seen many of them.

slim willow
#

you're playing on hurt me plenty right?

#

the old games and their enemy count and what appears where is dependant on difficulty. they're a little more there on ultra violence sometimes (often) to the point of "wow a room full of pain elementals. great..."

finite crag
#

Only one Archvile so far 🙏

slim willow
#

Oh those are scarce in 2 regardless of difficulty

finite crag
#

With little exception, Doom 2 definitely feels more or less like just more of Doom 1.

#

I don’t know anything about level design, but it’s taken me a very long time to find my way out of some of these maps.

slim willow

what map are you on now?

finite crag

I got through map 15 earlier before I called it a day.

vale gyro

this man, has been through more doom maps in less time than I have

#

yet again, I don’t play often so, thats a reason

#

I just want idbeholda cuz my only problem is that I have no idea how to progress in this one wad

#

so do I just type idbeholda like if I was doing of those controller button combos

slim willow
#

TNT is absolutely dreadful. I know this sounds awful, but most people I've seen who prefer it usually have issues with revs and archies.

#

And then they get better and go "wow Plutonia is so much better than I remembered!"

ornate vortex
#

What makes me bizarre is how I personally think Plutonia is overrated (not saying it’s a bad wad)

slim willow
#

I think Plutonia has the best official maps. But I also sorta agree. It's definitely a wad from 96.

#

I still think Alien Vendetta is peak vanilla.

ornate vortex
#

I would actually agree there

#

I mean, there’s also hell revealed, but i think i’d pass on that one

slim willow
#

I know. But I'm saying AV outclassed all of the classic vanilla wads.

#

Also way harder than Plutonia.

ornate vortex
#

Alien Vendetta is way harder than Plutonia, longer in average map length as well

#

Plus the difficulty curve for AV is definitely a lot better than plutonia’s

slim willow
#

I agree fully.

ornate vortex
#

Plutonia is almost a mix, you get maps like “Abattoire” and The Twilight which are hard casually compared to the levels that come before and after

slim willow
#

Yeah I like how it eases you into the mean stuff

#

Map 20 being this sort of "calm before the storm" map

#

Wish it didn't fall victim to needing an icon fight though...

ornate vortex
#

I’d come close to saying that Sunlust’s curve in difficulty is almost similar to AV, except Sunlust is just known for being superior in every way possible

slim willow
#

Well yeah. Fancy Boom wads can do it way better because they have more tools available.

ornate vortex
#

True

slim willow
#

For a 2001 wad that can run on dos though, AV is definitely super impressive.

#

At least in my opinion.

ornate vortex
#

Scythe is also pretty good

slim willow
#

Yeah Scythe rules too

ornate vortex

The final level is a ball buster tho

#

Anyways, pretty random question but where would you say Magnolia is in terms of difficulty?

Plutonia is in the process of becoming my favourite official wad

#

Every new challenge is unique and still fun to solve

finite crag
#

What is the most extense level wad?

craggy bone
#

The final level of Scythe is such an insane difficulty spike haha

#

I wish Scythe had ramped up the difficulty a bit more gradually, rather than have those BIG spikes on 21 and 30

narrow condor
#

Yeah, that's a common complaint about Scythe.

#

The first episode has a very gentle difficulty slope in comparison.

#

I'm not sure if I ever finished the last map. I remember it being too tiring and overwhelming to be enjoyable.

dapper flint

# marble tundra Can you sneak up on enemies in the original dooms?

kinda. Levels are not usually built around it but enemies do have a cone of awareness in front of them and sound propagation is limited by walls and the like. There are some niche instances where you can silently trigger shootable switches by using the delay between the sound and the actual weapon attack, or where you can prefire bfg/rockets before enemies are aware before the full barrage unloads on the enemy the moment they see you. So in the majority of cases, no: levels are not designed for it. But there are rare times where you can "surprise" enemies or keep them unaware longer than you might expect.

plut2 is generally regarded as quite good. plut3 is just a few nonsense levels made by a young kid who liked plutonia and is not regarded as good. There is also plutonia revisited which I think is pretty decent as well. There are no sequels made by plutonia's developers themselves. I do personally encourage you to try stuff that isn't plutonia themed as well(even though plut is great), but also play what you like

#

if you really like plutonia, you should also consider everything Josh Sealy has made, as well as Ribbiks' Crumpets pwad. Sealy wears his plutonia inspiration on his sleave, and crumpets is just in my mind, an extension of plutonia but with Ribbiks distinctive style and a good intro to ribbiks(this is one of his easier sets and he makes harder levels usually

broken heron
#

Ooh, Crumpets looks promising

inland hamlet
narrow condor
#

Honestly, one of the things I really like about Doom is that it's full of hacks and stuff just thrown in which unexpectedly turned out to be incredibly fruitful for fanmade content.

#

It's a very idiosyncratic game that lends itself to abuse of its quirks and that's one of its charms. Newer games feel much more sterile and bland in comparison.

#

To give a (more intentional than incidental) example, Tom Hall, with his signature "gameplay over aesthetics" focus, insisted that teleporters be added to the game and fought the rest of the team over it, who thought it was too out of place. In the end, Tom won and it was a throw-in feature. Doom itself wouldn't be too different without teleporters (they were mainly used for technical convenience) but I can't imagine how modern maps would be without teleporters.

@finite crag If you want to pull your hair out of anger then Plutonia, and if you want to get bored very fast play TNT evolution, I don't know if they even have lore but I think they are lore friendly, I don't usually put custom wads or mods into any game, so I could be wrong

Once you reach the point where want to mod or customize the game more later down the line then you consider a source port

For example:Source ports like Crispy Doom and Chocolate Doom keep the game as close to original, GZDoom allows for endless modding, DSDADoom is specifically for speedrunning etc...

azure nimbus

So anagnorisis and dehydration are lengthy for different reasons

#

Dehydration is, as its name implies, a grind, a drought. It is a grueling hour long slog by design with few arena fights. It's all about tredging forward. I think it's good and one of the few maps to accomplish that gameplay style well. Gougaru hates it though. Anagnorisis is a massive massive level with a dozen secrets(and real secrets. not double counted ones) that opens up in many different ways depending on the order you tackle weapons and keys that culminates in a mountain climb into a central core arena fight

If you did update it recently and haven't changed your save destination, it's most likely because of the new structuring GZDoom uses for separating savegames by iwads. eg my save_dir is ~/.config/gzdoom/saves, which means that if I save a game on DOOM2.WAD, it gets saved in ~/.config/gzdoom/saves/doom.id.doom2.commercial.

They do take a lot of metal riffs from the era but not all of it is just ripped, plus some of the much more mundane sound effects like picking up health and ammo is theorized to have been made by Bobby himself

And the statement is incorrect anyway cause you’re not gonna find “To win the game you must kill me, John Romero” played backwards in a stock sound library

I was wondering if any of you had a recommended list of wads starting with older releases going up to the more modern spectacular stuff.

azure nimbus

Momento Mori, alien vendetta, scythe2, speed of doom, heartland/valiant(anything by skillsaw really), sunlust(haste is probably better for such a huge project cuz sunlust is long), fractured worlds. These are ordered by release date, and they also happen to be approximately ordered by difficulty

We are doing chocolate doom

#

I will switch us to zandronum for the later stuff

#

Brutal doom is on the list but not until much later

#

It ruins most intended design in wads I think

ornate vortex
#

Brutal doom is as far from classic doom as it gets

azure nimbus
#

Choco is going to limit a lot of what you can play. Rowdy Rudy and BTSX are fully vanilla compatable though

ornate vortex
#

A lot of modern wads are boom compatible

random crescent
#

Prboom+? That's my usual go to

#

I used that for Sunlust okay

#

Not sure about the multiplayer aspect of it though

azure nimbus
#

A new version of woof released recently. I think that's a popular choice for coop

random crescent
#

It's weird getting somebody into classic doom for the first time but it's fun to see how people react to it

#

We just finished doom 2 and his reaction to barrels of fun was hilarious

azure nimbus
#

pain elemental gaming

random crescent
#

I'm gonna make him solo go2it

#

I'm going to keep him away from things like hell revealed I don't particularly consider one and two very good

#

Although maybe they should get the exposure I don't know

azure nimbus
#

if you want to show off one map or whatever, it might be good for contrasting but that seems like a good idea

random crescent
#

Yeah maybe I'll load some of the maps toward the end so he can get an idea of it. I like slaughter maps but I don't save scum and if a map is built around that I don't play it

#

Thanks for the suggestions guys I'm made a note file on my phone and will reference it when it's time it's gonna be great going through the classics

random crescent
#

I'm 35 and aging fast anything I played when I was young is old now.

#

Old final fantasy old Metroid/Zelda etc

#

It's all timeless I get what you're saying

broken heron
#

Just got into community megawads myself after finishing Final Doom. So far having a great time with TNT Revilution.

random crescent
#

Yeah it's one of the highest rated wads for sure

dapper flint
broken heron
#

Just finished Transduction from TNTR and it might just be my favorite Doom level yet

low karma
#

this is doom one chat right

finite crag
#

Yup

#

Anything related to Doom 1 and 2

low karma
#

okay cool

#

so I gots a question

#

since the campaign doesn't run in a direct story line like you just drop in like in something like god of war what order do I play the single player doom 1 in and is there any story to get from just the first game or do I have to look into the lore on youtube

slim willow
#

You just play episode after episode. Knee Deep -> Shores -> Inferno -> Thy Flesh

low karma
#

okay and how do I get story out of doom 1 or is there not much to get?

slim willow
#

At the end of each episode there is a story dump

finite crag
#

It’s pretty minimal

slim willow
#

True

finite crag
#

I guess the episodes have “themes” but that’s stretching it

slim willow
#

Basically, you are the Doom man and your marine buddies are fucking dead and oh shit there are demons and oh wow Doom man has a gun.

finite crag
#

Hell invaded, you shoot demons. The end.

slim willow
low karma
#

okay sweet thanks

finite crag
#

I’d say yes when it comes to level design. When it comes to plot, it’s all pretty irrelevant

low karma
#

and what do the secrets mean should I be lookin out for em or do they have little impact on anything

#

also trying to 100% the game

slim willow
#

You get nothing for 100%

#

It's just for fun really

finite crag
#

Just the chicks

slim willow
#

I have 100% completed Doom 1 numerous times and all I got were food eaters in my dms.

finite crag
#

What a ripoff!

low karma
#

wait

#

so there's no achievements in doom 93?

slim willow
#

What version you playing

#

Like what console

finite crag
#

Xbox port has achievements

slim willow
#

Because Xbox and Playstation have them

#

I don't think 100% all maps is one of em. I could be mistaken as I play with source ports and shit.

finite crag
#

It’s mostly just for finishing episodes and stuff

#

Secrets are mostly just extra ammo and stuff isn’t it?

#

I stumbled across a few of them, but most of them I completely missed

stark quartz
#

Any doom 2 levels with the Bfg in em past level 8?

slim willow
#

10

finite crag
#

I’m gonna do 16-30 eventually

shrewd hull
#

Does anyone know if I’ll still get steam achievement’s if I enable cheats on Doom 1993?

low karma
slim willow
#

basically

#

Yes, though it's essentially a fleshed out version of the original story

dapper flint
#

Plutonias story is still the best

#

You can read the text on Doom Wiki without bothering to play.

#

I don't think anyone plays Doom for the plot.

#

Then again, people made films and cartoons of games like Tetris and Pac-Man, so what do I know.

Secrets can be used in more creative ways, like offering shortcuts or letting you take down monsters in a strategic position in advance to make a future fight easier.

#

But those are few and far between.

azure nimbus
#

or give extra content

agile junco
#

Hey I'm in E1 M4 and i accidentally used both the bio suits and i can't figure out how to get to the yellow key. Any pointers?

spice radish
agile junco
#

Yea but the prob is i know i have to get ver the nukage pool and like get on this longer but the only way to do that would to get in and i keep dying

azure nimbus
agile junco
#

Okay sounds good thank you

finite crag
#

Sre there any good WADs that have a crusade theme?

agile junco
#

Wtf is a wad

spice radish
# agile junco Wtf is a wad

Old Doom games are stored in a .WAD file type. So whenever someone asks about WADs there talking about any good custom level packs or mods to play

azure nimbus
#

Or at least the assets: sprites, text, textures, levels, sounds, music. The executable is not part of the wad

agile junco
#

Okay thank man

spice bronze
#

WAD apparently stands for Where’s All the Data

agile junco
#

Or What Are you Doing in my swamp!,

#

*?

warped jungle
#

Playing through doom 2 on ultra violence +

#

Sucks and is super frustrating (i love it)

dapper flint
#

Good old plus

slim willow
#

It's ok plus is fun!!

ornate vortex
ornate vortex
#

Speaking of which, I now have news about that

#

I managed to beat Comatose casually in 42 minutes

#

So now I am very certain I am ready to start actual attempts this map

#

I think I can very likely aim for sub 30

#

I have a specific route that I have very nearly memorised

#

I just need to be certain every enemy is killed in the area

#

because if I miss a couple then it’s most likely a reset

azure nimbus
#

I wonder if notes would help, saying how many kills you need per section

agile junco
#

I think it would be cool to be able to stick and write notes to yourself on the walls of maps.

dapper flint
vast reef
#

????

#

not to mention you can't do that without console commands

#

playing doom for story is like going to mcdonald's to get sauce by scouring it off their burgers

ornate vortex
#

I could definitely try and find our how many kills are in each section

low karma
finite crag
low karma
#

Yeah. “Press space to continue and just run over things you’d normally have to jump”

finite crag
#

What?! No cinematic cutscenes?

spice radish
#

That’s fine. Those 2 are fantastic games

finite crag
#

Hey, playing any Doom is awesome

finite crag
#

Plutonia is awesome

#

Probably the most consistently good official wad in the original engine

finite crag
#

Yeah true

small spoke
spice bronze
#

oh yeah how do I play the Doom or Wolfenstein RPGs

#

didn't the USMC make a Doom WAD in an attempt to use it to train soldiers?

#

Wait wasn't the guy who made the cover art for Classic Doom games also the dude who made art for first edition Dungeons & Dragons?

dapper flint
#

D n d was an inspiration though for doom In general

spice bronze
#

Early in development they toyed with the idea of an Alien tie-in but dropped it for the sake of creative freedom

#

Maybe I'm mixing it up where they took the first edition Astral Dreadnought head as inspiration for the Cacodemon

dapper flint
spice bronze
#

yeah the RetroAhoy Doom video did a rather thorough analysis of Doom's stuff

dapper flint
#

Been years since I've seen that. Remembering it being good I think

ornate vortex
#

That's why I find it best to just memorise it

#

that way it's not classified as cheating

#

anyways, just gonna bring up that sub 30 is 100% possible

#

I did my first attempt and died around 14 minutes, and I was well over halfway done (kills and secrets)

#

Actually so hyped for when I release this to the community

azure nimbus
#

you can have notes, as long as it isn't literally in the level I thought

ornate vortex
#

Oh, I thought using doomwiki during a map run was cheating

#

I mean, tbf they would never be able to tell

#

It's not like I need to even use doomwiki at this point

#

i've memorised where all the linedefs are that I need to cross, as well as all the 23 secrets in the level

#

since in Comatose, over half the enemies are ambush, and they teleport in once a linedef has been crossed

#

so it's definitely important to be aware of the linedefs in the case of 100% kills
