Apparently the PS1 cover art of DOOM had been created before both PS1 and DOOM (the original PC version) were released.
@KinoFabino I painted the DOOM art. What folks don't understand is when I did this art - the DOOM game didn't exist. I was being asked to make stuff up based on black and white faxes of 8 bit characters. Instagram @rogermotzkus

PSX Final Doom CE is the way I'm choosing to final tackle the dreaded TNT. Then I guess it's on to the first playthrough of Doom 3.

PSX Doom CE is a PC port of PSX Doom/Final Doom. Keyboard and mouse controls with that PSX Doom atmosphere/soundtrack offsets a little of the tediousness of the TNT experience.
Really love the horror vibe of that version. Also, CE offers a number of enhancements to the original experience that kinda makes it feel like its own thing.

I'm playing the NG+ of Overboard and it feels much more distilled.
It throws bigger enemies at you but also gives you lots of resources to work with. I was hoping for changes to the maps' design though. It rather feels like just a difficulty level above UV.

My original copy of the Master Levels for Doom II is dead. The play button has been removed, meanwhile I can still play all of my other old copies of expansions that I bought pre-grouping. I had a menu launcher set up for the Master Levels and now I can't play them through my old copy because the play button is gone. Otherwise I'd have to add my Master Level menu launcher as a non-Steam game to play it that way and my original copy would sit there as a dummy.
I'm aware they're still accessible through Doom II now but every other expansion still has a play button and still works. My original Master Levels copy is just dead now. Can you guys add the play button back please?

I finally figured out the origin of the arpeggio in The Healer Stalks.
It's a simple chromatic pattern over a flamenco/rumba chord progression called 'the Spanish cadence' (or 'cadenza').
It's been bothering me for so long, but wasn't bothering enough to actually dissect the Midi or try to figure out the chords by ear.
You can look up "Spanish cadence flamenco guitar" on YouTube to hear how it sounds like.
Just to chime in, once you get a foothold on ammo and weapons it's a bit more manageable, only just.

A little reminder, the original 1993 doom doesn't have freelook (looking up and down) or jumping, if I recall correctly GZDoom enables those by default
If you like jumping and freelook you can keep them on, if not you can tweak almost everything in the settings
For a first timer, GZ strays quite far from the original executable. I'd really recommend something like woof or dsda to start with
Unfortunately I don't think woof or dsda have auto wad detection like GZDoom

woof has an autoload folder but idk how to use that. Is it really that much harder to grab ZDL3-1.1 and select it from the menu

You can use PrBoom+ or Woof if you want a more authentic experience. Or go for Crispy Doom or Chocolate Doom if you want something even closer to the vanilla version
What features does crispy or choco do that is more vanilla than woof or prboom? On woof for example, I can do a 4:3 aspect ratio and lower res just like classic
I mean, the goal of Chocolate Doom is to be as vanilla as possible, and Crispy Doom is a fork of that same source ports with more modern features

I once played all Master Levels on GZDoom with the Master Level Menu Interface mod, LegenDoom, and a Doom 2 music pack thanks to ZDL. I just had to set everything once, done

Yes. Limit removing is cl2 or cl3 essentially. So all vanilla doom behavior except the game won't crash just because the map is big. Boom is a separate engine(cl9) with new features like fancy line triggers, door types, conveyers, and more flexible weapon swap behavior, slightly improved AI, and the ability to push monsters off ledges. On boom you can swap instantly to the shotgun for example without needing to go to ssg first
Worth mentioning that some boom maps (very rarely) can't run on BOOM.EXE because of the limits

True, you can use "lists" which will dynamically increase the limits whenever you need them, but eventually your PC will run out of memory
The solution that modern source ports is simple, make the limits insanely high that you can't ever reach the limits
unless you are a mapper who is designing for the vanilla executable, there is basically no gameplay reason to use doom2.exe rather than a limit removing port. Anything that plays on true vanilla will play identically on lim removing. Anything that is lim removing won't run on true vanilla at all

It can, in theory, since it's just a webapp in a browser.
You can inject a Doom source port in JS and write a shim to make it interface with the chat interface, completely violating the Discord ToS in the process.
It'd be essentially the same thing, except instead of running natively, it would run in the web browser.

Heya. I'm brand-new to the DOOM series and have completed the Steam version of Ultimate DOOM. I heard there is some expansion of sorts called Sigil that adds to the story; so where do I get it and how do I make it work? For some reason I couldn't find the answer via Google, which surprises me.

Sigil is not on steam. It can be bought on John Romero's website, or you can play the free version(equal to the paid version except different music(by Jimmy Paddock instead of Buckethead) downloadable there or through various doomworld or idgamesarchive links. You'll need to run a source port to do so. Download the port, the launcher and give the launcher access to the port and sigil as well as doom.wad(right click on your steam game and you'll find this file). Is it canon? idk if there is even a story.

My recommendation is to search up "ZDL" as your launcher(I run 3-1.1) and either woof or DSDA as your engine. Either will get you a vanilla compat port. From there, you can ask more when you have those unzipped, or follow along with doomkid's or sobad's youtube videos as a guide for how to get them running.
It can be intimidating, but as someone bad with computers myself, it is rather easy

id Software simplified their Steam catalogue, part of it involves renaming Ultimate DOOM to DOOM (1993)
Other changes included DOOM II dropping the Hell on Earth title as well as combining Final Doom and Master Levels into one purchase with DOOM II.

It’s not even that big of a deal but I like it them being titled The Ultimate Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth instead of just DOOM (1993) and DOOM II.
Though having Final Doom packaged with them now is great I can finally play it through a source port without needing to purchase Final Doom.
Ultimate Doom seems to make more sense as DOOM from 1993 did not have Thy Flesh Consumed as well as improvement on some maps. It didn’t get a fourth episode until 1995.
Though I can understand why they decided to rename it to “DOOM (1993)”, to avoid possible confusion on some newcomers between DOOM from 2016 and DOOM from 1993.

in the latest Karl Jobst video, he says that some wads were so good that id software turned them into official releases. This is true for TNT but he shows footage of plutonia. As far as I remember, plutonia was commissioned, not purchased after the fact.

he says revs have a 25 % chance of firing a homing rocket. Where did he get that number from? Someone talked about it in the comments. doing all that research and explanation, it can be hard to not miss nitpicky things like that

That revs spawn with a 50 % chance of favoring either type with a 25 % vs 75 % split. And it might switch from pain state. It's reliant on frames count not rng. revs have even length states except pain state(and pain state can interrupt other states). I just wonder where he came up with it. Maybe he watched decino's video and stopped when he got to the first 75 % 25 % stat shown

Well, PS1 revenants are slower. But their missiles always home and the sounds they make are way creepier.
Would have been funny to have the missile traps in N64 play their new cry before they fired
while playing either, after a short while, the pauze manu wouldn't open anymore and whenever i pressed the spacebar ('use') i'd hear the menu selection/pistol sound and after like 4 presses it would suddenly put me in either E1M1 (Doom1) or Map1 (D2) as if i'd selected new game in the opening menu
never had this issue before today, normally both games played flawlessly
All you can realistically do is contact ID software and tell them about the bug, in the meantime you can download a source port like GZDoom

Yeah in GZDoom you can look up and down, however you can disable that to make it more like vanilla, or if you want gameplay identical to vanilla use Chocolate Doom (Vanilla Doom that runs moderns computers) or Crispy Doom (Same as chocolate but with quality of life features and higher resolution)

gzdoom is what you want
all you really need to do is download gzdoom, put it all in a folder, drop in your .wad(s) and run it

You can still pick up health bonuses at 200 HP but it won't do anything other than count towards total items.
100 % items is more important than any health

the custom binds menu for unity made me cry. why is there a separate bind available for chainsaw?

no. Neither would have any effect on a vanilla port. Boom does give you the chance to have separate binds for ssg and sg though but unity is not boom supporting.

Depends on what’s around you more often than not, plasma is great for pain stunning them, a few point blank SSG blasts will work too, but best? BFG em and get close so the tracers shred them, good way to take them off the board fast and nuke whatever they were bringing back

The BFG thing is just RNG I’m pretty sure. If you have the plasma to spare just keep shooting him and try to avoid as much damage as possible (perhaps try shooting from afar) if you don’t have the plasma you’ll just have to default to the Chaingun or Rocket Launcher

explore the level. there is an invuln. For what it's worth, the bfg isn't all that rng dependent because essentially law of large numbers/bell curve. you can expect about 3k damage each time

With a berserk, you have 10 possible damage outputs and they are all weighted equally. imagine a die with 6 faces. all are equally likely. but with 2 dice, 7 is the most likely outcome as it cab be reached in the most ways. 2 only has one way to get it. with day 40*15 + 1 dice(the number of rng calls that a bfg uses in damage calculation(more for blood splatter and projectile sprite offset), it oddly becomes more predictable.
there are a bunch of cqc cybers in e4 who are either a pain or easy if you know the layout. that's Romero

rng isn't hating you here. You're doing some insane calculations. Max damage from a shotgunner is 45. ceil(45/2) = 23. You will never take 76 damage to your health even without armor from one. Same for shotgunning the shotgunner. They will die in a single blast 100 % of the time. Even if you get all 5 rolls (idk if that's even possible), that's still 35 damage which is more health than he has. My guess is that you had blockmap bug

I kinda just added a shotgun to the door,then next the door a couple of imps and some barrels,then i added a secret pathway to get the chainsaw. what should I "improve"?

So I said “screw it” and once the crusher was not crushing me, I got myself back to 100 HP, and I call it kinda fair as I was at 130 before and it was not even my input that caused that

Steam allows you to have both the original and unity ports

doom (1993) is what the steam build calls ultimate doom. My guess is that they mean ultimate doom and might not release that ports exist and that they technically play on a port

nothing is mentioned for bugs. At the end of the day, the MLs are a combination of 1994 shovelware, deathmatch maps, and a couple decent maps like the black tower. Nothing crazy

with gzdoom, you just have to double click the .exe file
There are a bunch of guides online, but the way that I do it is: download a version of ZDL(I like 3-1.1), and a version of GZdoom from the zdoom website. Right click on your doom 1993 game(or doom II). Go to manage, then local files. Pull the doom.wad or doom2.wad files and put them in the same folder as your unzipped ZDL (the launcher for most doom ports) and GZdoom(the port/engine which works for brutal doom). Then in ZDL, select the files from your folder: namely gzdoom and doom.wad in this case. From there, you would have the game working on a port outside of steam. Then you can download stuff online and have your ZDL grab it like we did for GZdoom and doom.wad.
to run a mod, you drag the file onto the said .exe file
you can also just double click the mod file and when your OS (i'm assuming windows) says to select a program to open it with, just choose the gzdoom.exe file

I played on various source ports including Doom95 and the stock Bethesda release, played the 1.1 Shareware on DOSBox, and I still refer it either as the original DOOM or DOOM 1993.
Zdl is super useful for quickly switching ports adding all the wads or mods and quickly removing or adding them. I really recommend it

You’re supposed to use command line arguments to pass the pwads into it, drag and dropping doesn’t work if you have more than one pwad to use and the order in which it loads them matters
Or ZDL. I never really figured out drag and drop. Huge proponent of ZDL. It neatly categorizes all of my stuff

in classic doom, when you die, you have the option of restarting the map with 100 health and a pistol loaded with 50 bullets: A pistol start. Many players, including myself, play every map this way. If you don't want to play this way, use the built in save system, @fallen edge

either with saves and loads, or you'll have to recollect items throughout the map. Like you can regain a shotgun in map03 as well as armor. But that's finding a new weapon to replace it. It's not like you can find your old gear in a backpack on the level like quake multiplayer

The bfg edition wads should be fine for just playing them and they are compatible with most source ports, but if you want to play some community made pwads you might have some slight issues

How do you play co op?
The steam and console ports are local coop only. If you want to play coop online, there are tutorials for odamex and zandronum online. Woof also supports coop but I've never tried it myself

the only reason i sometimes play with it is to get that janky 2015 doom mod video aesthetic (usually playing complex doom with addons or DRLA)

so it’s one of the few non-vanilla options I have on
well, all brightmap does is add some light

found out about the whole steam consolidation thing (how did i even miss it)
more could have been done, like putting doom 1 and 2 together and adding the bfg-exclusive episode that really shouldn't be exclusive to the bfg edition
but its still a cool thing to do
another cool thing they could have done is put bfg and doom 3 together
allow all changes of bfg to be disabled
I do use widescreen tbh, but not high res textures
