It really is incredible how much more exponentially fun Eternal gets with mastery of the mechanics

Every game has this to varying degrees obviously but the only other games I’ve played that have had this effect to this degree are like stealth games

I can understand why most people don’t enjoy Eternal a ton too though

I never learned the one cycle, I learned a combo that gets him low enough to stagger from ballista splash damage and then finish him off from there.

Just going off of memory here but in normal gameplay, you can expect damage fall off to make a sticky bombs splash to do about 265 damage against a marauder, like yeah it’s safe to a certain extent but being harder to hit stops being a benefit when it also becomes harder to restack, and splash damage is the worst thing to do with screechers around

Closest thing to a life hack I can suggest, kill the cursed prowler asap, use the bfg pickup when you find most convenient in that arena because it’s downright useless against the dark lord, spam hammer and flame belch and or ice bomb, and just lock on burst spam the tankier enemies

Well the game tells you about the basics to get good like quickswitching, and I got fairly decent on consoles without watching guide videos. So I don’t think the learning curve is atrocious, but for advanced play on master levels and the like it can certainly be a pain.

i know from 1200 hours of experience - with unintended quick switching to much faster drain ammo supply - that you have more ammo than you'd ever need, as long as you chainsaw intermittently and don't only use one gun

Tbh I get you a little, Eternal’s tutorials annoyed me quite a bit, and on my first play through I struggled with ammo a lot.
If you do come back to Eternal, I’d recommend getting acquainted with the chainsaw and getting acquainted with when to use it, also make sure you go for ammo related perks on your weapons and suit.

They delibaretely changed it in DOOM 2016 to be just Nightmare but permadeath while in RAGE, its first appearance, it was actually a higher difficulty

RAGE 2 has the best of both worlds. Ultra-Nightmare is a real difficulty, and you can permadeath any difficulty mode. This is what TDA needs

anyhow, excluding people who aren't as skilled in the game from discussion creates a very asymmetric dynamic where you either have to conform to other peoples' opinions or just not have an opinion at all. and even if you are less experienced, you can still apply logic and reasoning to your opinions to increase their validity. moreover, skill in a game is not the only metric by which you judge game design, by simply being experienced with games you can recognize demonstrably bad game design.

it's also another perspective compared to a player with 500 hours in the game, which is healthy and good, because a game should cater towards newer players too - if only the experienced players enjoy something, that's not good game design. and there's a difference between making something so only experienced players enjoy it, and having something with depth.
