Doom 3 is indeed canon. It's another universe, so most of it is unrelated to 2016 or the OG games.
But it does have lore that connects directly to the other games. The Martian Hero is implied to be the original Doomguy, and the Argenta appear in this game in lore as the Martians.

Think of Doom's canon as a spider-web; each notch is another dimension, many of them have Earths.
Below the spider web is Hell. Above the spider web is Urdak. Hell has invaded multiple of these "notches," and Doomguy's ended up getting there.
He goes from his OG world, to Hell, then to Doom 3's Mars through Hell after they invaded it, then he ends up with the Argenta - when he becomes the Slayer he rampages through Hell for eons until finally UAC people from a third "notch," 2016's universe, find him in the sarcophagus.
Multiple Earths. But only one Hell, and only one Urdak.
So the Hell we fight in Doom 1 is the same Hell we see in Doom 3, and in Doom 2016 - just in different points of time, and in different dimensions they're invading.

OG Doomguy appears in Doom 3 as a figure in the lore, not the protagonist.
Doom 3's lore mentions the Martians, a race of proto-humans, being invaded by Hell and nearly rendered extinct before their Hero, a man depicted as Doomguy, defeated the demons using the Soul Cube. This lore happens millions of years before the events of Doom 3.
The Martians are clearly Argenta, as named in 2016, a race of medieval-aesthetic space warriors who worship the Maykrs. Doom 3's Martians are likely an Argenta sect that dimension-hopped. It is very possible Doomguy had this encounter after 64, ended up with these Martians through Hell's invasion, and then found his way on Sentinel Prime (in 2016/Eternal's dimension) through some sort of portal.

All we know for sure is that all of the Argenta lore happened before Hell's First Age ended. 2016 happens at the end of Hell's Fourth Age. So the Slayer rampaged across Hell for basically like two Ages before being put to sleep, which would likely be eons.

The Argenta are fucking nuts. They've been an empire spanning galaxies for loooong before Doomguy ever met them. They colonized several planets under the banner of the Maykrs, and the Martians in 3 imply their conquest even spanned dimensions.

In Eternal's first level we see an ancient bell for a clock tower with Argenta text scrawled across the base.
The lore Codexes for Cultist Base and Doom Hunter Base also confirm the Argenta were present on Earth during its prehistoric age. The bases are retrofitted from ancient Argenta architecture, and Doom Hunters are cyborgs made from ancient primordial monsters that were on Earth at the time.

On top of this the Urdak Codex implies the Maykrs' existence is what led to warped versions of their doctrine as religions, like Christianity, which would imply the Argenta were here to become humans and misrepresent this lore.

Not even accounting for them like losing it to history or something, they have explicit lore saying that the conciousness and knowledge of every Maykr that ever was is preserved in some kind of hive mind. This is possible but the Martians and Argenta are simply identical. I think, personally, it's best to go with the assumption they are the same until proven otherwise.

On this: The Maykrs have been subjugating cultures for the majority of their existence, ever since the Father became a Life Sphere. It's just that before the Transfiguration nonsense, they essentially did it "just because" - the Maykrs are narcissistic and self-worshipping, and they feel it's in their culture to demand worship from "lesser" species. They did this to the Argenta long before it was a necessity.
It was only when the Father was stolen from the Luminarium that the process of Transfiguration got ruined and the Maykrs required souls to sustain their lives.
In fact it's possible the Maykrs did this even when the Father was alive. It is 100% possible the Father was approving of this and in fact led in it. We just don't know for sure. If he did, that could be a reason why it was best for his Life Sphere to be shattered.
And finally, on this last part: I believe it's plausible that, given the Maykrs' rewriting of their own history, that they willingly forgot (perhaps intentionally so) about Hell in order to push it from their minds, insisting Hell no longer exists. This would be another facet of their narcissism and hubris.
Eons passed between the Maykrs' and demons last conflict and the Argenta lore. I think the Maykrs are simply arrogant and, while they have this knowledge preserved in the hivemind, simply never bothered to keep up on it because they deemed it unimportant.
I mean I didn't get any vibe that they were like, destroying civilisations beforehand. It seemed to me they were more just colonists, going around and spreading their influence, getting lower civilisations to worship them because, like you said, they're narcissists, but nothing suggested they were getting them to "sacrifice themselves to find redemption"
I mean, before Argenta they wouldn't even get anything out of death, there were no soul factories or anything.

You might also consider installing some mods. There are a great number of mods that can enhance visuals and gameplay, to whatever your specific tastes are.
un is a fine goal to aim for, of course, but you shouldn't stress yourself out over it
and you certainly shouldn't attach and notions of pride or self-worth to your ability to conquer it
"Rip and tear, until it is done" leaves plenty of creative freedom. Explode demons, have fun.
I personally enjoy using strategies that I find maximally fun, but are mechanically suboptimal. I sometimes do nightmare if I want to challenge myself. Typically I do ultra-violence.
My family watches me game as well sometimes, so I'm doing that playthrough on 'Hurt Me Plenty'. Just so that the demons zip around less & they have a better spectator experience.
This way, when my family says "Use the BFG again! That thing's awesome", my reply will never ever ever be: "But we have to save the ammo"

it, for some ungodly reason, just does extra damage on 90% of the enemies in the game because ig it wasn't strong enough

If you want SSG firepower with CSG spread, I recommend checking out the redeemer shotgun mod (it's not an in-game weapon mod, it's a mod you have to install into Doom Eternal that changes the per-pellet damage of the CSG)
It turns full auto into a very satisfying chaingun-shotgun hybrid.
And those big enemies will catch all the pellets well outside of point-blank range. Which is...satisfying.
so for TAG2 speedrunning, immoran soldiers are a very peculiar case because in the 5.0/5.1 patches, they have virtually no hp, usually you just spam a rapid fire weapon hoping to hit them with at least 1 bullet, but with the high pellet count of the super shotgun, I wonder if it’s more efficient to just aim the SSG in their vicinity and basically kill them without even having to aim, making a minor timesave
doom 2016 also had universal cooldowns on every weapon, sure you can shoot twice in your shotgun all you want, but if an identical mechanic existed in doom eternal, punchswapping would be more overall DPS. or even deadswapping
imagine how overpowered the meta would be if you could shoot the SSG twice in eternal, any meta that uses punchswapping would just become mind numbingly easy

i.e. using Sticky punchswapping to clear out groups of fodder that are spread out
precision bolt punchswapping is good for clearing fodder
rocket punchswapping is good for massive splash damage ( I.e. wiping out a horde of pinkies without blood punches )
ballista punchswapping can be used for traversal
sticky punchswapping is obsolete as opposed to just hitting the headshots on fodder, but it’s good for when you don’t feel like having to aim

Now in 2016, I got A TON of mileage out of SSG/CSG-burst swapping. By the time you blow the super shotgun load, the three round burst is ready. By the time you shoot the three round burst, the SSG is reloaded. It shreds through shells, but it was undeniably awesome.

Combat shotgun in Doom 2016 was one of the instruments I used to burn down the final boss in the game. It never really goes obsolete.

The most stupid Mastery Challenge is the Chaingun Shield lol, at least for PB and Meathook you still have to "think" about the mastery

You can shoot a rocket and then pull out the shield and it'd count towards the damage counter for the challenge
grenades, blood punch, dashing, etc etc all counts towards the challenge
You ever think about how dashing does more damage than punching
your quickswitching could be better, but that’s not really what’s holding you back, in your situation it would only make you faster. I skimmed through a bit of it and to when you died, you have good fundamentals and I feel like the only reason you died at the end is because you started panicking

nah what you do is do super gore nest, then at the part where the pinkie pops out of the door, just kill it reload the checkpoint and keep doing that over and over again
that's also how i got lock on mastery i just kept reloading the mars core level cuz a prowler always spawns when you exit the elevator lol
Tbh I think masteries are just not great design. At best you get them without thinking through normal gameplay and otherwise you have to go out of your way for them and it breaks up the flow

also for the pinky section it was a mix of things, I honestly think ontop of it being panicking, and less than optimal decision making. you got a teeny bit screwed over, you were at a very specific health value where you didn’t hit the low health status so one shot/damage reduction didn’t kick in and you got killed despite having the ability to have been able to tank the shot had you had gotten to lower health first.
Maybe if they were used as like, soft tutorials on how to use the mod effectively

For Lock-On Rockets it uses Prowlers to promote that "Oh this thing seeks out stuffs even if they teleports away", but Full Auto using Pinkies for the challenge promotes nothing, using the weapon against Pinkies has no inherent advantage

nope the games stupid, the only things I can recall is having armor values above 25, and having the low health display prevents you from dying in one hit ( although the low health display one shot prevention has a cooldown, don’t remember the number )

After Skimming through the footage the lowest my armor goes is 48, which means for this entire run i was basically working with just 102 hp, which is insane to think about, this might be slower than my last run but it's far better

The shield has 600 HP, and basically it has a constant DoT on itself that drains 100 HP per second

6 seconds is a ton of time lol, no idea why they didn't make the health decay to be at least 200 HP
But yeah this means on lower difficulties, the Shield can take more hits since enemies deals less damage
it was odd because when I switched my classic difficulty speedruns from ITYTD to UV, the wolf skip set up became a bit different ( literally requires you to stand still for a few seconds, so energy shield is crucial )
I think this is the only weapon in the game where it's objectively better on lower difficulties lol
btw something that I didn’t know for the longest time is ITYTD in specific gives more ammo in terms of pick ups, which I find weird because it’s obviously a homage to classic doom, which makes me wonder why they didn’t do the same for nightmare

a pattern I’ve seen all across doom eternal level design is plasma pickups almost ALWAYS come in twos, 60 ammo on higher difficulties as allowed to 90 on ITYTD is kinda wild

brink of death didn't kick in there because the pinky charge, which is what he got hit by, is coded to ignore said mechanic
it just goes right through, no damage reduction or anything
also, brink of death is guaranteed to kick in if the last hit you took would've killed you (as long as you had 21 health or above and the mechanic itself wasn't on cooldown)
instead of death, the damage of that singular hit is reduced enough for it to leave you alive and you gain iframes for the next 300 milliseconds (500 milliseconds on HMP and ITYTD)
having armor also isn't a requirement for brink of death being triggered, your total stack (health + armor, armor is irrelevant if it's 0) just has to drop below 52, because at 51 combined stack you get the low health warning
he wouldn't have died there if the damage he got hit by had been almost anything other than a pinky charge

it is for when you're above the threshold. As long as you're above 20 health an attack that would have killed you will leave you at 5 health instead, and it has a cooldown depending on difficulty (seems to be absent on Nightmare, meaning you can use it as many times as you like)
The reason Clamshell died there is because the Pinky's charge attack is one of the attacks that bypasses this system

there's two important takeaways here
- always try to have at least 21 health, that's the bare minimum for one shot protection to start cooling down
- never try to facetank a pinky charge, it ignores one shot protection and can do 100+ damage if said pinky has been charging for long enough
it's hard to test the maximum possible damage in that situation but i just got a pinky charge to deal 120 damage

possessed enemies obviously don’t deal more damage normally, I’m thinking it might be like a pre 6.0 dread knight situation where it deals multiple instances of damage at once
if the charge's damage scaling is based on some kind of internal timer instead of distance traveled, possession could be speeding up that timer

bring up weapon wheel to buffer an arbalest double shot, pain elemental dodges, but since my weapon wheel was up, my framerate was an effective 1786 to the games physics, enemies are frame dependant, although I do find this instance odd and at least to my knowledge it implies it doesn’t just change the speed of the AI, but their rudimentary thought process as well, so normally he wouldn’t have enough speed to make such a lunge, but I guess during the weapon wheel buffer the thought process becomes “wait I have enough speed to cross this gap, I should lunge forward”
Tbf Deltas UAC ML also locks you in a hallway at one point with alot of different posdessed enemys and at the end 2 possessed marauders
as early as 2021 bros thought process was “let me make an hour long slayer gate with no checkpoints” I’m so glad he’s retired from that shit AFAIK. he’d be a menace in 2024
His World Spear ML does have a 30-min long Escalation Encounter which has checkpoints, so I don't think his design principle would stay the same
But yes idk who would come up with something like a Slayer Gate and go "hm let's make it 1-hour long and no checkpoints"
now that I think about it, who’s the intended player base for these modded levels anyhow? the majority of the doom community doesn’t even know how to pb rocket, and even the people I’ve seen play these levels, they lack technical knowledge and don’t even know how double shot works

I did talk with idk929 about it and he gave me pointers on how the encounter is supposed to go, I still disagree with that encounter's design philosophy but maybe when I replay the map sometime in the future I'll have an easier time with it
I really like the start in the CBT levels, flying around outside with a lot of demons is just really fun
I think the intended audience is the general playerbase but not in the intention for them to play it, but to be shocked
there's a side audience that's the super dedicated megaplayers who will put themselves through the torture of actually beating it

you either get the questions right by thinking about them, or it just becomes a memory game on each sequential playthrough, it just breaks the flow of the entire level, don’t even feel like playing it after that

I did it before without even knowing it was the feet that made him stagger instantly
Not entirely sure but I think if you want to do that you have to stagger him with PB, throw a grenade, shoot a rocket and then use SLOB to double LOB him
But it is way easier to ballista although the rocket one is faster
It's pretty big, you just have to make sure that when he un-staggers you have the ballista ready to shoot near his feet
Shoot the Ballista at his sides, or just whichever side of his feet he doesn't have the shield faced towards
I can do the Marauder SLOB 1-cycle tech but I usually just go for the feet tech most of the time

Sentinel Prime is great for UN, i get the whole panicking part tbh. I would say to W-key but this is a single player, so one way to W-key imo(i havent tried it myself) is to just go into UN with no objective to beat it. Just play it for playing it and memorise the layouts on the way subconsciously. To really relieve stress, just don't care.
Aside from stress itself, you'll also wanna be prepared for the arenas and boss fights. Since you died at the gladiator boss fight, i highly recommend you to practice it over and over until you beat it easy, or just practice it tons in normal nightmare right before you fight him in UN

In the first level they appear they come as bosses with more HP than normal doom hunters
The first one has the most HP the second ones second most and the the normal ones has the least

I mean yes but the idea of "Ok here's a boss, now spend the most of your time not fighting the boss" just sounds ridiculous.
It's definitely a byproduct of Eternal's gameplay design, but I find it baffling that it took them until the worst boss in the game, The Dark Lord, to realize that maybe making bosses drop resources like ammo throughout the fight is also a viable option.
Also it's not like this is a new idea either, that's literally how 2016 does it.

just because you used to be able to bait TDL in earlier patches doesn’t mean 0 cycles were possible, because you opened differently, combo interruption wouldn’t work the same
although,, maybe it’d work, but it’d be super impractical, im talking like so impractical that it’s basically the same as the one cycle but with a different opener
assuming the first hit always has stunted damage, that means your opener would be dealing 1800 damage instead of the ( I think ) 2900 damage
effectively halving your damage output in the beginning, but it’s okay because there are ways to deal slightly more damage during one cycles, but usually it breaks him out of it because the massive damage prevents combo interruption from taking place
although if the rockets actually stun him, you could follow with an SSG and being the opening attack to 3400 damage, making the idea of a zero cycle much more plausible

Damage to its face is 38.4, so it's possible whatever you're looking at in the files is referring to the """headshot""" damage
I use "headshot" in quotes because the game's weird with how it does weakpoint damage, and shotgun doesn't normally actually do extra damage to weakpoints/headshots/etc. My guess is the maykr drone head is coded to just do "extra damage", kinda like Pinky faceplate vs. back.

hold on that’s insane, let’s say you start with a full stack upon every death, that’s 23,800 damage you took. for reference a cacodemon bite does 36 damage on ITYTD, meaning you took the equivalent of 662 cacodemon bites

3 archviles, and they don’t spawn until 3 tyrants are dead, and you can just destroy the buff totem

it’s a shame how the first and one of the only times they implement such a mechanic they handle it like that, like for a good players it’s literally a few clicks and he’s dead, and at worst he’s like a miniboss for more casual players
the buff totem completely fucks up his AI though, he does this thing where he greenlights but immediately decides to cancel it
by definition you're forced to deal with a buffed enemy there but it doesn't really make a difference

the slayer is inactionable during it but you don't have iframes so there's literally no counterplay if you get hit by an attack as soon as you're teleported
ie death plane teleport into attack that ignores brink of death is checkmate unless you already have shield out
maybe this applies only to portal lock fade in, but I think you can cancel that by going to your dossier and then closing it
having to constantly stay aware of stupid ass death plane placement while playing modded master levels is so mentally draining

there's situations where meathook makes contact with an enemy and starts pulling you back up so you WOULD'VE recovered, but you also touch a death plane a couple frames later and get fucked

death plane is an inaccurate name cause they don't actually kill you in this game
but whenever you fall during platforming or combat, your screen darkens for a bit, you lose some health, and you're teleported back up

Nightmare is very much a nightmare for sure. Fodder can easily deal 20-50 dmg, making gargoyles and plasma soldiers 10x more annoying

I always try to go for full completion in any level I'm in so I haven't missed any so far
I can bet 100% the reason i didnt die to 2 tyrants, 1 baron of hell and multiple mancubi is because there were no whiplashes
and if I do miss some collectibles I just come back to the levels later
Pinkies and whiplashes put into large arenas paired with other demons and fodder boils my blood

But honestly(it might seem biased but) i feel like fodders can be seen as a learning curve. Knowing theres so many of them and they deal so much dmg despire being weak, youre prompted to either kill them fast with large spread weapons or just avoid them by being in the air and traversing around the arena
shield soldiers have terrible movement and no range so i'd say their damage output is fair
I once played a master level that spawned an enemy behind you to surprise you, wasn’t too effective, i imagine a shield soldier could’ve had potential to be a bigger kick in the ass
no joke I can beat the entirety of TAG2 without using the plasma rifle even once, it’s so useless
unfortunately I don’t run hundo, I barely touch TAG1 and Yeetblast is too good in early campaign to not use
PR has some functionality. It’s very little (one stagger per fight or stunlocking a demon) but it’s something.
stunlocking isn't as useful as straight up removing the demon in the fight faster

the stunlock gets immediately broken out of at close range, meaning if you wanted to quickly do pb ssg whatever enemy you’re attempting to do it to immediately bumrushes you anyways, atp just throw down a frag
that means your best option for something like that is pb rocket, or maybe a lock on, but let’s use the first one as an example, because if you’re lock on-ing you might as well rely on the damage falter anyways. so it’d go like mb, pb rocket, 50, 400, 900, damage, takes about 1.5 seconds to do that each cycle, using a tyrant as a baseline, you’d spend about 7.5 seconds to kill a tyrant with a combo like that, which is laughably bad because chaingun base fire deals 1000DPS, killing a tyrant in 10 seconds.

possessed manc projectiles are a tiny bit scary i guess, but the other 2 spirits in world spear and immora can grab what, a fuckin tyrant and hell knight?
i'm going to mention the possessed enemy falter so nobody else brings it up, the issue you mentioned just gets amplified in this context
instead of relying on tiny stuns that gimp your movement and force you to stay in possessed enemy melee range, it just makes more sense to use your busted ass movement options and deal damage like a normal person
lel… the only time the spirit is even remotely threatening you can just out damage every enemy

spawns not possessed so it’s a free 2710 damage meaning you can sneeze on him while he’s possessed and he just dies, there’s methods to downright instakill him but if you do that the other arachnotron gets possessed instead
and the BFG placement is intentionally shitty for this reason, you could most certainly get a placement that spawnkills both arachnotrons, but then the first tyrant spawns possessed
No clue why they make it like this though, there’s most definitely instances of enemies spawning possessed, like the possessed hell knight in immoras turret section not too long after the escalation encounter arena
which by the way is a kick in the ass because that arena requires a double dblade set up with the hell knight and turrets to basically Instantly end the arena other than the second hell knight, but ID devs love adding features that make the game harder than it needs to be like aim punch so you can just straight up miss your double dblade with perfect aim in that section

i use balanced quite often
it’s anything that applies FSE ( use the precision bolt for simplicity sake ) and then a rocket with said FSE applied to it, meaning if the rocket doesn’t come out fast, your SLOB isn’t happening, and after that FSE rocket is fired, you immediately start your lock on, this activates a sort of buffer state that makes it start without a wind up, and if you release both left and right click during the volley firing, both volleys will fire, I find it nice to just spam left click during the volley firing process to give it a little bit of leeway, but I can assure you sylars video was most likely accurate

I’m doing this next number off of memory but it takes about 6 seconds to fully charge up a heat blast like that anyways as opposed to dblades 2 seconds
