Not really, if you've played Tower defense games like Bloons, then something more akin to Apopalypse, whereby enemies spawn in the arena continuously with no breaks, you earn perks and resource refills for smart play and maintaining kill streaks. Man, I really wanted to get good at battlemode but the learning curve was just too steep. I didn't try it until after the .666 update when they started pairing equally leveled players together. Then move onto Exultia, repeat, and so on with the other levels. I made it to Doom Hunter base before realizing it was going to take forever, but it could work.

That gate is hard for your first time but if you take your time and don't rush in so hastily it's doable. Just manage ice bomb and blood punch usage. I think at that point you should have flaming meat hook and Punch and Reave, and an upgraded Ice Bomb

For what it's worth - no. The Divinity Machine was originally meant to use Davoth's power as a way to "purge" the Sentinels by recognizing the Malicious One. It was essentially bullshit and a way to stoke the Khan's paranoia. It actually giving someone Davoth's powers is a secondary effect Samur found by reversing the machine's polarity.
It was a transaction. Davoth's powers went into Doomguy, and it's implied this process destroyed the machine or at least rendered it inert.

We know Davoth's power is completely gone during TAG2 because the Codex shows us what he was like when he did have that power - he was like the Slayer. And in TAG2 he's not like the Slayer, hence why he has to use an Immoran mech to fight you, hence why he dies to a simple stab to the chest. His power was stolen, it is in you. You are the usurper.

In terms of the stakes and direct conflict of Doom Eternal, the finale has always been the Slayer's fight against the Icon of Sin at the end of the base game. That is the culmination of Eternal's plot - save Earth.
TAG1 and TAG2 are definitely important, but they don't tie into that plot. They are a new plot - Hell has taken control of Urdak, you need to stop them lest they figure out how to use Maykrtech to expand their reach even further.

Davoth isn't even close to the most physically powerful enemy the Slayer fights.

Maybe it's a time loop thing, were upon the completion of the Slayer's task, he is sent back to his origins as the Marine from the classic doom games, and is made to relive his life continually until the end of existence.

That would imply the will of a higher being even more powerful than the Father. Or even the Father himself is causing this timeloop.

So this climactic fight at the end of TAG2 - obviously it's important, and it means a lot to the Slayer as a character. But narratively, this is less "THE FINAL BATTLE TO SAVE ALL OF REALITY!!!!!!" and more "Well, nothing left to do but take out the trash."
