the first gate is one of the harder ones actually because you have such low HP and don't have the tools to quickly dispatch heavy demons. I always save 3 chainsaw for the dread knight to make it easier, but those gargoyles are brutal on nightmare

once you get SSG, destroyer blade, and some health upgrades they're quite manageable

They are though, albeit on a surface level. There's a rather well built token system that co-ordinates demons based on how close they are and manages demon cooldown. Enemies never mindlessly charge you, there's always just one charger and the rest throw ranged projectiles.

In all seriousness, Whiplashes aren't that bad since like most demons you can just lock on burst it. 2charge Dblade puts it into GK, 3 charge kills it outright.

Even early on if you REALLY need to you could just get a single heat blast to stun it then do PB rockets or whatever else, I dunno.

In modded content the most annoying (but in a fun/difficult way) enemies are probably Pain Elementals. Base game doesn't use them that well but a good Pain Elemental can completely change an arena in modded content.

The most annoying in an unfun way is Marauder, hands down. Marauders are laughably easy to kill nowadays, but they're still boring, poorly designed enemies with a plethora of bugs attached to the hip, and they change an arena's design for the worse.

The game caters to noobs and not to higher level play.
