I used eternity because I needed to use UDMF but I don’t care for gzdoom and zdoom all that much
Zdoom’s fullscreen has an odd effect on my screen and gzdoom isn’t my favorite, to put it nicely

Nice and fun, you could try adding enviromental objects here and there to spice it up a bit. Like barrels, lamps and stuff

Oh i'm bad with decorating too, trust me. The important thing, i've learned, is to try to envision what you want your map to look like in the end. Hell? Space? Earth? If it's earth, maybe add a bunch of marine/dead soldier corpses. Hell? Bunch of demon corpses. Stuff like that, atmospheric. Level 1 of DOOM is so iconic, i think, cuz of the dead soldiers. That was SCARY in 93!

In UDMF format is there a way to get the player sprite to reflect off of surfaces? Like if I have a room and the floor is a mirror is it possible to reflect the player sprite on the floor?

aight just did it, the baron cage you should make bars for both sides and make the bottom part of the cage a different texture, also make them impassable

No, you have to use other programs like SLADE to create new monsters. And custom monsters that are really new are only possible on GZDoom.
There’s a programming thing named DECORATE, which allows you to code custom things and monsters.

I'm trying to play Blade of Agony standalone but all the models like vehicles and flak guns are 2d. I thought it was normal until I found a YouTube playthrough where they looked normal. Anyone know what setting is causing that? RX590, Ryzen 5 3600 if it matters. Max settings wherever possible, but I've tried lower presets and searched settings for models and sprites, found nothing that can fix it

how do I test a Doom builder map on the Steam version of Doom 2?
Don’t use the unity build for that
so should I use the .bat one?
Look for the .wad file
Should be doom2.wad or somethings
Get a source port
To run the game directl on your computer
And get the wad file for the custom map and drag it onto the exe file for the source port

There are a bunch of different source ports for different purposes so Im sure you could ask someone what source port suits your needs, or I could give you a small list

For basic vanilla with some extra friendly features like horizontal mouselook and wasd keys I use crispy doom

If it’s a vanilla wad it’ll work on there

quick question, I'm new to mapping in doom's engine, and I had a win32 exception error pop up whenever I try to test my map (with both doom builder 2 and gzdoom builder) any suggestions on what I could do to fix this?

neither of those editors are supported anymore, i'd suggest getting ultimate doombuilder which is the currently maintained iteration.

you need to point your doombuilder to a working sourceport in the settings

I think you're trying to run the dos version of doom
you probably want to use a source port instead

there are many different sourceports you can choose from, but the most popular are GZDoom (for mod support), PRBoom+ (good all rounder) and Crispy/Chocolate Doom (similar to vanilla doom)

You gotta use gzdoom for mods, not the unity port
The unity port is a good start to playing doom but it should be replaced with a source port quickly
Gzdoom for mods, crispy/chocolate doom for vanilla, prboom+ for optimization or something like that

Boom or limit removing are the 'easiest' formats to learn but tbh pick which ever sounds the most fun. Vanilla is full of esoteric limits though so is generally the hardest for a new mapper to get into.

Brutal Doom needs zdoom. Bethesda is not allowed to support that

Finally! An experimental Alpha (Alpha 0.5 as I call it) is available for download! Unfortunately I had problems uploading the file to Moddb, so that will be for another time...
For now the mod is special for Brutal Doom, but it can work on other mods like Project Brutality and EOA (bugs are expected...)

last i checked doom uses drum textures and not skyboxes but i might be wrong

According to zenimax the problem is that the game has the doom IP but runs on a different engine (which would ne gzdoom) so to them it is an entirely different game with the doom ip
That sounds... not correct, unless GPL has changed since then. Because lots of games like Selaco use the gzdoom engine
The GPL license remains the same lol, licenses cannot retroactively change.
Selaco doesn't have to doom IP, doom remaster 4 is a doom game not made by zenimax (who owns that intellectual property).
Now making a mod for a game doesn't count becouse a mod isn't a game on its own but Bethesda doesn't consider dr4 a mod bevouse gzdoom (despite being a fork (of a fork of a fork) of the original doom engine) isn't the doom engine (in other words, dr4 is not a mod for doom but rather a game for gzdoom which happens to require doom files in order to work).

my friend decided to challenge me, he said "if you make a map that's so difficult i can't beat it i'll buy you lunch" so yeah we went to chipotle and it was good so i deiced to show off my dumb map constructive criticism is encouraged if you find any bugs tell me (i only made the map in 6 hours so yeah it might be a little raw) fair warning don't play it on the lowest skill
this wad works on GZ Doom so far
in terms of "bugs" you can reach for some boxes of rockets through the door, not sure if that was intended
map design wise the archviles can be cheesed by retreating into the room w/ the switch that releases the archviles, and the barrels in the final room are easily spotted so you could detonate them before going up the lift into the final room
also in terms of ammunition there's something like 150 rockets (30 boxes) in the Cyberdemon room, and 1-2 boxes of shells too
if you want the player to have to resort to using the SSG to kill the cyberdemon for that dank difficulty then reduce the rocket number to 35-40 (7-8 boxes)
there's also a BFG in the final room which isn't needed as you already have a lot of rockets left over so you can kill the Barons that way
for the barrels if you want to be really evil then make the lift to the final room smaller and raise the height of the final room so that you can hide the barrels and prevent them from being detonated too early by the player
Embers of armageddon is entirely ripped assets from doom 16 so there goes that argument
well some elements of the map are there because i plan to make this one of the maps in a mega wad specifically the bfg to use for later same with the plasma gun

When creating the map, it asks what format you want. None (vanilla), Boom, Eternity, ZDoom. Even if you choose zdoom but only add vanilla features, it will only work for zdoom

Actually this is a bit wrong. First it asks you what port you are targetting: None (vanilla), Boom, Eternity, Zdoom.
Then it asks the format: Doom, Hexen, UDMF
If you choose None or Boom, you can only choose Doom format
if you choose Eternity you can choose between Doom and UDMF
If you choose Zdoom you can choose Doom/Hexen/UDMF
So vanilla maps are None/Doom
Boom maps are Boom/Doom
Make sure you're in doom in doom format. Check that you haven't exceeded the vanilla limits using choco renderlimits. If you're in the right format you can accidentally make a limit removing map which means it won't run on chocolate doom, but it will run on crispy doom
I'm assuming you are using ultimate doombuilder. You can check the map format by pressing F2 and also change it if required. If you change it the map will be fine, just the line actions will break and will need to be redone
It may also behoove you to not naively simply change the map format through DB - I have had a few nasty issues with this in the past resulting in corrupt levels
Instead, convert it "properly" (using command-line tools) or open two DBs and copy everything over

I've never had any issues using udb. If you're worries the easiest safest way is to just copy paste into a new wad file set to the new map format.

Depends on what you mean by "look 3D" - You have some interesting options if you want to fake 3D-looking architecture like suspended catwalks and whatnot
But it depends on how your level is set up and whether or not the player can access the 3D objects, and a few other factors
If you're willing to make a few custom textures and sacrifice a few additional drawsegs, so-called "Mordeth bridges" are probably the easiest of these effects

It didnt work with neither crispy nor prboom+, so I used gzdoom with doom2.wad
The map itself is pretty chalenging and fun, but it has a lot of missing textures (see screenshot)
To open doors (required to beat the level) you need to press switchs that dont look like it. Right from the first room, it is required to press in one particular spot that no one would think to press on

if you want vanilla expierience, crispy doom is one of them

There’s chocolate doom, which is 100% vanilla
If you want limit removing and vanilla but enhanced, use crispy doom
If you want optimized with extra features, use prboom+ or something like that

You can run crispy doom through a shortcut on the taskbar or Home Screen if you want but for the custom map you’ll have to drag it every time

This update is called the funify update. i made it to update some weapons to make the game a bit funner. this includes changing the lazer shotgun for the t600 into the grid gun, a gun that shoots projectiles that bounces off of walls in a grid like pattern...

Discussion about ZDoom
If I want to use some of doom 1's computer textures in a doom 2 map, is it better to add doom 1 as a resource or to rip the textures from the doom 1 wad and slap them into mine in slade?
Don't use more than one iwad, it'll break shit. There is already a doom 1 texture pack for doom 2 (and visa versa). I can't remember exactly what it's called but pretty sure it's on realm667

Looks like you're missing some resources
If you made the map with custom resources loaded in UDB, you'll need to either load those as well, or compile them into the map to run it direct through gzdoom
What bridge burner said. If you don’t feel like putting them in the wad itself try using ZDL to load both the map and the resources
I second this, ZDL is super useful for basically everything to do with doom modding, including loading PWADS

it's not compatible with DSDA-Doom, the error says that "Hexen format is not supported"
doom in hexen format is only supported by zdoom based ports so yeah, you'll need to use gzdoom

I think without a key I'd just make the linedef the action
switches are much easier to read as progression points

if you want an extremely authentic Doom 2016 experience in 1993 then you can try Zion
or if you want something more lax then try Embers of Armageddon
if you want even more complexity then you can load in the Embers of Armageddon Eternal mod to swap out the 2016 mechanics for Eternal ones
