Oh it’s object file, and it gets created during the preprocessing phase, before the actual compiling.

What are you trying to accomplish?
If you're looking to integrate in some custom behaviors the engine isn't capable of, I highly recommend learning ZScript for GZDoom, or just GZDoom in general, as it's very likely capable of covering what you need. You'll be having to release any code you make as open source anyways, so might as well use an engine that's had all that hard work done for you.

I have a problem with enemies dying immediately after testing a map on gzdoom, the enemies work just fine if they are in the same room as the player, but if they are behind a door they die seemingly by nothing just spontaneous death, is there something I need to tag or something, I don't have on no monsters I already checked that
All the wads available are fun so eventually try to play all if not most of them

Mod idea, it is literally just a re texture but it's all neon, all black and bright colored lines replacing the textures.

if a .png has the same file name as the texture in doom, it will replace it

just thought id throw this on here. i made a map in three days (originally meant for one day, but family troubles got in the way). aptly named "origwad Redux", its part of a series of maps I plan on making where I take classic maps, their motifs and key aspects and recycle them into a new map. origwad was a 1994 WAD and is well known as the first user made map ever published, so i chose it as my first. heres the download. it should work on vanilla or any sourceport; i tested it using GZDOOM and DSDA-DOOM, and I found GZDOOM to be a better experience. A bit late, but merry christmas.

at the loop part of the music for the 3rd level, the background droning noise gets repeated way too much and it kinda hurt my ears

Just getting started with my next Redux map; my Redux series is where I take old WADs, their motifs and key aspects and recycle them into something new. This time, I'm taking the 1994 WAD "Aarrghh!". i recommend a path of atonement playthrough and then a path of the dawnbreaker playthrough with mutators
Just played it, here's my thoughts
-Areas are too big, why not make smaller maps? sometimes less is more, and I skipped through most of the monsters, not sure if this is just your style for mapping yhough
-Theres not enough ammo or health, and for some cases the rocket launcher and some ammo pickups could've been easily accidentally avoided due to the map being large, also the scarce amount of ammo and health led me more to skipping past all the monsters, which is kind of boring
-Also few little tips, try adding more detail to your maps, like pillars on the corners or terminals, and try playing with heights more, make stairs that lead to an elevated room or something, and use border textures like doorstop,the silver support texture, or metal to create good transitions to an area whenever you use different textures
So far it was an interesting map though, I like how it went from a base to a hellish cave, I'm assuming you're an early mapper so you did a decent job here🙂👍
Thank you! I’ve been told that there wasn’t enough ammo and health, so I added some more pickups around the map, but I could add some more. I tried to balance out the larger areas with some tight corridors, but I’ll keep that in mind for future maps. And yes, this is my first map.
Oh, and about the border textures-is there any place in particular where I forgot to use them? I thought I used them well enough.
You did use them well enough, but there were definitely some places where you forgot to use them, no worries!, the fourth pic with the green walls is also just a recommendation, adding borders even without a change of wall textures could also work too! I should've also said that.😅
I just played the map, I agree with pretty much everything here although I didn't really have ammo issues.
One thing to note is that the yellow door only opens once from the outside so if you don't go through before it closes you have to noclip to finish the map.
Also this map would greatly benefit from some teleport or closet traps, you could try adding one of those to the room with the pillars and move some of the random monsters to a closet or teleport room that the player trips when they get the yellow key. Would easily make that room a memorable highlight along with the end cave.

i guess i like the concept more than the execution, because it is sometimes so tedious
just wanted to give a thanks to filbert and fishy. they're some of the first people to ever compliment one of my maps. it might be a bit of an over-reaction, but im new to mapping and it means a lot, especially for my motivation to keep going! thanks.

@light prism Just wanted to say that I love the game you and everyone else has made. I just got done playing it on the hardest difficulty and thouroughly enjoyed it. I do think, however, that "comboing" with the Hammer could be tweaked a little - I feel it should work so that the more the player combos with it, the stronger it becomes until they stop comboing. This rewards skill with power, while at the moment the combo mechanic is just "Fire, then Alt Fire". But I'm just some British schmuck who knows nothing about game design. Overall, great demo, and I cannot wait for the full release.
there is actually an upgrade that does exactly what you said
though it caps at 35% damage boost
btw the combo mechanic is not that, there are heaaaps of combinations - press f1 for contextual help to see a few

the upgrades are randomized so you may not have seen that one come up
i will still probably end up adding some more 'special moves' for it though
like a 'drill attack' style thing and some kind of whirlwind uppercut
the idea of randomization was to force you to have a roguelike-ish build, it still obviously gives you a branching choice each time, but you can lean towards specialization
ah i see. thats really cool! ill be sure to replay it a couple times. i really hope the game gets more recognition, especially for a modding scene to start. you bet ill be making some maps for it!
i think the endgame is to allow the player to not only pick the skills but upgrade them
atm the code logic isnt there but i can eventually implement (there are 32 hammer skills alone so might take a while)
give it a try with the mutators, i did try and make those change up the gameplay quite a lot
like barrels of fun and achilles heel change up target prioritization a lot for dawnbreaker path

So, they changed the panel press mechanism when you trigger an action to happen, like a remote location for a door or several doors
my question is where in the hell are those triggers for labeled 1?
do I need to switch it to be labeled 1 with the rest of the doors/actions labeled for 1 or is there a place that TELLS YOU which it opens when triggered?

one thing i used to do is just watch other people map, such as DavidXNewton's RAMP tutorials. Another good one is DOOMKid's "Vanilla Mapping 'Stream'".
Even if you watch them in the background, they can still be helpful and provide inspiration.
You'll get the hang of the engine real quick, don't worry.

Slade is compatible with Strife, Heretic, Hexen, lots of games on the good old idtech1 engine.
Is UDB not? I've seen Hexen format but I haven't looked to see if strife or other games are.
As I've read through, you can make maps for the Build engine, even for the first Quake also. UDB only works for doom engine.
Weird, I had no idea Slade supported Build engine stuff. That's pretty cool.

How do I edit the main menu with a personalized title
And how do I retexture the HUD and enemies?
I want to make a kinda total conversion and I want to retexture the base doom enemies, but I don't know how to do it

With SLADE, you can import your main menu picture(It's aspect ratio should be 320x200) and rename the picture into TITLEPIC,
for the personalized title, you can import your photo(It's aspect ratio should be 125x60) and rename it into M_DOOM
IMPORTANT: be sure to convert them all to doom gfx pallete after
For retexturing the hud and enemies
HUD:
Import your photo as usual (It's aspect ratio should be 320x32) and rename it to STBAR, and you also need a separate photo for the ARMS section, the aspect ratio for this should be 40x32, and rename this photo to STARMS
For enemies you can import your sprites and then rename these sprites to the names of whatever enemy your trying to replace (For example, "POSS" is the zombieman's sprite name, you can look up the sprite names in the doom wiki or just view the doom2 iwad with slade for the sprite names 🙂👍)

The sprite thing can be done on your own custom wad, you shouldn't mess with the doom 1 or doom 2 wads at all🙂👍

What I mean by this is don't edit anything in the doom1 doom2 wads, just simply check it out for the doom monster sprite names 🙂
I mostly edit my sprites on my mobile phone so I use Pixellab, there's an option there to change the aspect ratio which is very useful

Hey everyone. Currently getting ready to get started on my first largish scale mapping project after many small maps, and need some input. When it comes to mapping, I don't want to be just another ribbicks or skillsaw (but much worse), I want to reach out to the niche amount of people who want DOOM maps themed around other games (me included). So, I want to ask anyone thats here to give me there suggestion for what game I should do. Preferably, the game should have graphics that translate well into DOOM textures - so stuff like pixelated graphics. This doesn't just have to be classic games either, newer games like Minecraft can be offered too. Thanks in advance!

So far, I've planned making a mapset using the original SMB Textures, and then a series of maps using the Minecraft textures, but each map is themed around the next update (e.g. there will be a map for 1.0, then 1.1 etc.) But yeah, I'll take a look at Terraria's sprites and see what I can do.

A wad is actually a special type of archive format (like a .zip file) and you can view all of the files inside using a program called SLADE

I'd then also like to add some pk3's and pwads to Doomrunner or ZDL into Gzdoom, such as Smoothdoom, and some other stuff to give it a more "modern" coat of paint while still retaining its classic charm

Brutal Doom is extremely fun, but i just have one problem: The Ammo. Whenever i want to exclusively use my ssg or combat sg, it always runs out of ammo just like Eternal. Does anyone know how to increase the limit of my ammo in BD?
go into the console and type "sv_infiniteammo 1"
that works with standard doom at least, not 100% sure about BD though

Ok i have tested it and i will confirm that sv_infiniteammo 1 doesn't work with BD. i did test "give ammo" and it gave me the maximum ammo for every gun, yet doesn't increase the ammo limit.

At the start, there is a invisible actor that spams the wander state at a very high speed, and after it runs out of wander frames, it goes to its death state, and dies. During the death state, it runs "A_SpawnItemEX", this refers to an actor that is a random item spawner, (can be used to spawn any actor)
To make it spawn multiple types of actors at random, i used code from the allready existing actor "RandomSpawner", for the monsters, i had it so that when the wandering actor dies, it runs A_SpawnItemEX which spawns the actor i made called "MonsterPool"

In summary, you can have random thing, in random place.
or random thing, in specific place.
Here is one where i made it 50/50 if a sector goes up and down around 30 times, and also visible monster spawning and item spawning
As for the sectors, i just made a 50/50 actor, which has a chance to spawn basically nothing, or a potted plant. If the plant spawns, it gets pushed forward on a moving sector (treadmill behavior) and then gets pushed past a linedef, which activates the sector going up. causing the pillars to rise

As your first map is very good. The only criticism are the texture misplacements, if you want to know how to adjust the texture to be aligned press CTRL + A while on 3d view in Doom Builder

yeah i didnt really care about the texture alignment and all that, i think the most important thing is the shape of the map and monster placement
ofc texturing is really important too but iam not good at choosing textures so just decided to go with a pretty simple look
My recommendation is making a sector with a limited choices of textures and sticking only to that certain palette you want to use
Or additionally if you want there are custom texture packs for Doom
it's good but easier modes are harder than the harder modes, the cyberdemon at the start isn't there on nightmare difficulty

like if i wanted to have fancy architecture like the ceiling be shaped like a triangle or a hexagon

I think about this because you see, doom is actually a top down shooter game, a genre that is mostly synonymous with 2D.
It uses raycasting to make it 3D, which also turns the game into an FPS.
It's pretty clever if you think about it.
I always thought people thought Doom wasn't 3D because of the usage of sprites for enemies and weapons

fun fact: when rain is spawned, it has a chance to be thunder (about 5% chance) or a 1 in 1000 (0.1%)chance to be mythical rain that heals you to 1000 health (mythical rain is pink)

all the weird boxes outside the map are kinda like weird 50/50 rooms where it runs odds for serperate things, and others are weird logic-gates which do things based off if others happen or not

Iv made a wall that gets replaced with a random letter of the alphabit
if you dont belive it, it really does put one of 26 letters on the wall (i had to use many braincells to do this rng method)
it uses 26 "3DFLOORS" / Dummy sectors.
for each letter of the alphabit i had to make an actor for that letter, and i seperated them based on height, made it so 1 of the 26 spawns, and based on the height of the actor it will trigger the right triggers to make it end up on just its letter
why not just have 26 separate sectors one map unit wide?
that wouldent work, that would be 26 seperate things, and also cause the actor gets treadmilled across activation lines
if we did that, we wouldent know what the result of the other 25 letters were
and thus it would result in a mess
also if you mean the dummy sectors, i like them being the origional size of what im replacing
it also makes it so i can ajust the texture how i want it
How about three letters, now this... This could form a word.... Possibly. Given the 1 in 26 chance hits just right 3 times in a row.
I could even make a "no letter" teir, which puts the wall back if i wanted. That could create spaces. I could also make it pick vowels more often

you are paying for the assets and levels, NOT the code and engine
you can compile the game but it will not run without a file containing the assets and levels
