but 2016 is genuinely timeless, Kadingir, Necropolis, Titans Realm, Argent D'Nur, you get this like genuinely stone age vision of Hell, and I loved that direction so much, a land of cracked rock, of crackling red lightning where gravity is perverted in portions of space, with floating platforms, as ancient skulls line the grounds.

Hell in 2016 is legitimately this stone age, primitive fucking place, and it just adds to the overall darker and more grounded atmosphere of 2016.

Also the UAC levels were genuinely super immersive, the level design was build in a way where you not only had fun combat encounters, but when you weren't in combat and just exploring these very dense levels(like the foundary) it was actually very well deesigned on a structural level, you could see how such a facility could work, it was just really good sci fi.

The guns I gravitate towards most are combat shotgun, plasma rifle, chaingun, and gauss canon.
Plasma and combat shotgun being my typical duo of guns, depending on the situation.

In this run, I'm actually using the SSG and rocket launcher.
Still only using heavy assault for fodder demons. I'm completely aware of heavy assault, just doesn't interest me.

There's also times where reflecting their projectile back at them is super inconsistent and doesn't work 80% of the time so you get one shotted

Like I said its Hell being in this primitive stone age during 2016. 2016 when you go back, doesn't have buildings, it has crevices of rock, and cave, where simple skulls can maybe activate a mechanism to drag forward a heavy stone wall.

its a place bereft of technology, any and all aspects of civilization wiped up, dashed on the jagged and crushing rock(even though we actually know Hell is a very technologically advanced species, Immora is arguably just as advanced as Urdak.)

Deadspace is exactly what I was thinking of, The Foundary especially, its like, a legitimately immersive piece of environmental building just in terms of immersion, like you could imagine how a day at the foundary went, who worked what, and the codex entries describing the facilities going on's, it actually felt like a sci fi factory.

I don't remember 2016 being so ridiculously buggy and mechanically inconsistent in the same way Eternal is lmao

This replay made me realize that 2016 is EQUALLY as garbage and trash as it is incredible

like the background tells the story, in both Eternal and 2016, but its the actual level design that has changed.
like the foundary was immersive due to the level design, you traversed the pathways, you were walking along the walkways, you saw where the smelted magma pooled from, and dropped into, it was a level that tried to also be immersive as a lived in space
while with Eternal the UAC levels, are very clearly designed as a game.

Despite my preference for the more immersive direction of 2016, I must say
Eternal has probably one of my favorite pieces of levels ever in gaming, in Urdak.
Doom Eternal makes it very clear its a game, there not tryna to create these super lived in immserive grounded spaces like in 2016.
but by becoming more "gamey" when it came to actually designing this very alien and divine and technologically confusing and advanced realm in Urdak, absolutely other wordly in its presence(especially when you combine the peaceful music of Urdak.)

I've actually thought this out enough. I think Thira and Doomguy were likely intimate and that this partially influenced Novik to make him a Night Sentinel despite tradition saying outlanders can't. She probably put in a good word for him. I think their closeness is why Thira seems so close to him in TDA - she's the only character in the game to vocally defend and advocate for the Slayer even before he breaks free from the Tether.

Now, as the Slayer and with his trauma from the Maykrs, the Slayer isn't really capable of something like a relationship. It's a bit sad, so all that's left is Thira remembering the man he used to be and the Slayer feeling vaguely comfortable with someone who reminds him of who he used to be.

From a more platonic standpoint I think the same about Doomguy and Valen. They were probably pretty close friends IMO.
