there was a rune in 2016 that dropped equivalent amount of armor as health upon enemy death. the time challenge is more of an annoyance than an actual difficulty issue because it doesn’t even count as a death on ultra nightmare I don’t think. I recall an equipment ( siphon grenade ) in doom 2016 having functionally the same effect as ice bomb if not better, being able to stun enemies alongside dropping massive pools of health when you attacked them. The points of exploration is more of a quality of life feature. And the new ways to dodge enemies attacks doesn’t matter when 2016 wasn’t balanced around a mechanic that it didn’t have.

Archviles 100% are conscious and self-aware. They are the highest ranking normal demon of the franchise, working directly under the Archdemons, and IIRC are themselves tasked with manipulating demons lower on the totem pole.

Summoners - unclear but IMO probably conscious.

"Demon" isn't really a species - more just a term to mean denizens of Hell. In reality the enemies you fight in the franchise are a diverse group of Hell citizens, warlords, enforcers, wildlife, and war beasts.

Well, Earth was thriving before Hell started invading. During Doom 2016 everyone seems to be having a relatively fine time on Earth.

Think about it. After the events of Eternal, nature is taking back Earth from Hell. If they nuked the whole planet the entire place would be uninhabitable for humans and many animals for like a century.

Driving off the demons would not mean much if it meant nearly rendering humans extinct. (Humans are on other planets but that is besides the point.)

Similarly the demons, for the 13 years it takes them to invade Earth, have the power to fucking obliterate everyone left. And could do it at any time by just releasing the Icon.

The invasion of Earth is colonialism first - complete genocide is not necessarily Hell's intent.

But during Eternal they are working with the Maykrs, and the Maykrs do not like genocide unless it's a last resort. The Khan wants to be worshipped. This is why Argent D'Nur is how it is. The demons didn't wipe out the Sentinels - they just crippled their military and then had Titans destroy their cities to establish dominance over the planet. The Sentinels as a race are alive and well during Eternal, just being subjugated by the Deag and the Maykrs.
