all that changes is how difficult it is to stay alive

as for pickup values, they're worth anywhere from 25% to 100% more on itytd compared to other difficulties

shell pickups give 12 instead of 8, rockets give 2 instead of 1, plasma gives 45 instead of 30, and bullets give 40 instead of 30

in the timeline its just him. Basic timeline for our Slayer is Doom 1, 2, and 64 happen, then he gets stuck in Hell for eons due to time not really passing in Hell. Then when he finally does escape from Hell its not the same universe he came from, due to Hell effectively bridging multiple parallel universes together (idfk how that works but it does I guess.) Then he meets up with the Sentinels and joins them, all the stuff with them and becomes immortal via the Divinity Machine, effectively stopping his aging permanently while also granting a myriad of other benefits.

Dark Ages takes place presumably either soon before or after the Divinity Machine was used, as it takes place during his time with the Sentinels

so in the timeline it would go Doom 1-Doom 2-Doom 64-Dark Ages-2016-Eternal

I’m curious, but if The Dark Ages had a multiplayer component, what kind of multiplayer style would you guys want it to have?

Truthfully, it’s going to be The Dark Ages, Deathmatch would be the best possible multiplayer mode.

However, if id wanted to go a step further, I dare say that a co-op Horde mode, Invasion, a revamped Battlemode and some other multiplayer mode could go hard.

DOOM itself is a PvE, which is perfect, but PvP is half of what gave DOOM the longevity it has. The other half of course is the mod ability!

Of course, with the weapons we have seen and have been described at Quakecon, might be a fun element to max your loadout for fighting demons, and other Slayers.

Honestly, I would love the Unmaykr. I get it, it’s not quite the BFG, and not as powerful as the 64 original, but it’s so damn fun to use.

As for the Meathook, no arguments here! I’d want my favorite mod on my favorite weapon!

So far, we have the Super Shotty, the Accelerator, the Rail Spike, the Dual Plasma-Cannon, and the Skullcrusher. A rocket launcher of some kind would complete the weapon wheel, BUT, the weapon we need again is the Ballista! After all, it is the Sentinel go-to weapon!

what "makes sense" in this context is game mechanics that feel good, that's the priority

Tbh I don’t think the meat hook will be in the dark ages because since in the 2016 doom that didn’t have the meat hook and it was called the super shotgun it’s probably something doom guy changed post 2016 and pre eternal, plus it’s set before 2016 (I may be wrong because I haven’t seen the trailer since it dropped)

Does anyone else think this new game might reintroduce secret levels? Since the main levels are supposedly more open and back tracking will return, I think they could make it work, although the concept might be too time consuming for modern day game designs.

While I love the idea of them coming back, I highly doubt that they will. In modern game design I feel like it's just not worth it to spend so much time delevoping levels that most players will never play. Even though it seems to me that the devs are passionate about making this game feel more like the classics than any modern doom has before, this is one feature I would be very surprised to see return.

Maybe they can hide new weapons (or something like eternals skill points) in those level making searching for the levels an optional thing but necessairy to most (maybe make the a little less secret by hinting to the presence of the entrace of a secret level through something like statues holding the weapon or something like that). This way it’s not wasted time for the developers and fun to explore the whole world

I think doom eternal’s slayer gates was kinda a test to see how secret areas could work on more open maps. Maybe they could expand them to be a sort of mini levels inside the maps instead of the basic arenas we got in Eternal.

I find Eternal's level design to be more linear and less open than 2016. In eternal there was rarely more than one obvious path to advance, while for example I found the secret hunting in 2016 to be much more engaging, since even at the end of a level you still had access to almost the entire level and could backtrack freely
