My friends have always told me - stop reading chat, stop reading comments .. This insane ultra weird judgement/assumptions mindset has grown exponentially. I happen across some local area facebook groups. A legitimate question was asked and IMMEDIATE impunity on the assumed circumstances surrounding the question instead of reading. the. question. and giving an answer. This group think mindset prevades everthing, not just reddit couch warriors and tech. Its everywhere. Still formulating a combat solution to all this crap.

And embarassment and shame is right out the window.

I'll give an example that describes the same outcome: Someone asked in facebook community medical advice group (okay - this is really stupid, I know, chatMD...) that they had in itchy crotch and how to fix it. So what would happen is a majority of the respondants would clammor on about how sexually immoral the person is, they deserved the discomfort and should be ashamed of themselves. It was brought up they are endangering thier significant other and should be jailed (the extreme angle). When all it really was, the wife changed the detergent washing the clothes and the man's underwear now started to cause an adverse reaction to due to being skin sensitive to the new soap.

The thing is, humans are just naturally social people. Even introverted people are seldom truly alone forever.

While social media being your ONLY form of socializing is far from good, it is a (on paper) perfectly reasonable way to socialize. The problem lies in user behavior and user mindset imo.

User behavior is fairly plain to see, we've all seen the cesspools on reddit and twitter and such. But i think the mindset we as users have going into it has a hand in this as well.

Back in the late 90s early 00s, it was far more unrestrained and dangerous and people engaged with that in mind. Now that its become more controlled, we have relinquished that duty of vigilance to companies hoping they enforce their rules. When they dont, people naturally want to test the limits.

Just look at how we handle user profiles. Nowadays, its common to see people using their real names online and often also geo-taggjng posts. Do that in the old days and you'd be yelled at for being an idiot.

We've just started looking at the internet as a casual place, like a home or a school classroom or what have you. Instead of it being a truly public vibe like a train station or restaurant where we put up a different mindset.

We treat strangers as friends, and people are often harsher to friends when they think they're doing something stupid

Pre-covid (and especially pre-internet), people had to moderate their opinions on the simple grounds that you can't really offend your neighbors or coworkers because either A) You get excluded from the few people you can socialize with; or B) You get punched in the face. (Or both).

Now, with everyone's social groups being distributed on the internet, if you disagree with your social group you just find another one. Why bother getting along with other people's viewpoints when you can just find a group that 100% agrees with you?

So you end up with a situation where everyone is living in their own personal little echo chamber and anyone outside them is evil. After all, if they weren't evil they would be part of your little in-group too.

Now, those dangers still exist as seen by how many people click on scam links, but people just seem to not be taught to be careful.

I think people's mindsets have changed to be more relaxed now. Hence the lack of media literacy, and echo chambers, and lack of internet safety lessons, and the whole thing of going aggro at the first sign of something out of the norm instead of asking more questions.

We treat the internet as a personal safe space where everything is perfect, of course it's fine to have my personal info on display, of course i'll click that link I'm not dumb enough to fall for a scam in my home, you come into my home and DISAGREE with me? Get out of here

Thinking is tiring. Constantly having to think critically about things wears people out mentally. People have enough stress in their lives that they don't want to spend their mental energy on things they consider low priority.

As such, Everyone has blind spots where they just turn off their brain and accept what's given to them. It might be with certain friends or family who you just trust. For more limited contexts, you might trust certain news sources without digging deeper. etc.

At a certain point, you get enough trust worthy information from a source (or, at least you are familiar enough with their biases) that you just start accepting anything from them without thinking too much unless it sets off a red flag in some way.

The problem is that once you start accepting a source without questioning it, its biases start contaminating your thinking. That's a fundamental part of how propaganda works: You get people to accept you as a source of truth for easily verifiable things, then you move on to things that aren't verifiable but are tame and reasonable, and then eventually you work up to things that are completely (or mostly) false but are still believed because of that trust that's built up

Really, what's changed isn't that people don't critically think enough. It's that people are inundated with so much information all the time that they have to let some information through un-checked or else they'll be overwhelmed.

I'm not sure if that's the case as looking at the previous goings on With the Indonesian government it seems that they are trying to invoke heavy censorship upon its people including trying to prevent things that have the message of questioning authority figures and rebellion from reaching the people

thats why games like Persona 5, GTA 5 Metaphor Refantazio and Boulder's gate 3 are rated as "NO Fit for distribution" under their system
