@tight skiff Depends. If you are not very far into the main storyline at all, to the point you don't have any portal glyphs yet, I would consider starting the expedition with a new save. It will give you a jump start on your game.

Use the Elixir of Blood to commune with those beyond the boundary.
If that's not drinking it, it's slathering it on my legs. But whatever happens when I Use it, I used it.

I think you 'use it' by giving it to the portal. You make the other recipe to actually locate the portal then interact with it while you have blood in your inventory.

Elixir of Blood charges the portals, but you need to drink the first one to progress the mission and make a second for the portal.

one thing you might try (if you have't already) is waiting a few seconds after crafting and exiting your inventory for the objective to update, then drink it when it actually updates to tell you to do so

if you pause/options, you'll see two save slots: autosave, an actual automatic save, and the restore point, updated by a bunch of actions, for example exiting ship (except on derelict freighters and non-owned npc freighter)

@remote thunder for your gtk file: I did not have to excavate. I did not dig the first ruins I found but left a marker in case I needed to go back and excavate then used a map to get to a second alien plaque and when I chose knowledge of the past the milestone completed. Yay!

Okay, good, thanks. Because I made the 'mistake' of not doing things exactly as the devs expected and jumped just before hitting the portal. Finally figured out the base sentinels can't be ignored. At least the repair ones. Those are what make it impossible, so it is still doable for someone who sucks at combat like me.
