Yeah I used the animals on the first planet, Lowest Mano, because none of them are harmful to you, and they herd around very easily, to get lots of ancestral memories

This way you can easily farm like 1000s in a short amount of time relatively. In fact, you can just feed a whole group, wait for their cooldown, and get more. Over and over and over again. You could get virtually infinite memories from one pellet drop

What I did, except I fed each of them individually once.

I found mining liquid sun to be sort of a pain, because you need sodium I think it was to recharge it, and early on sodium is kind of a premium

If you go to the creature thing in quick menu you can toss out a pellet and it’ll feed a crowd of animals with using just one or a few pellets

Exactly the problem I had. And I wanted to pile up sodium for shield recharges, not blow it on mining that takes hours. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in my mining, but it seems so slow, unless you just don't care how much stuff you get from it.

I’m just now coming back to nms. How does this expedition thing work? I know it says start a new save but does that mean that I lose all progress?

Yeah, you start as a brand new save with a few things in your inventory, in a pre-selected system. And then there are goals to hit in order to hit milestones.

It advances you a lot faster than you would otherwise, and it encourages you to try things you might not have done much before (like this last expedition made me go on derelict freighters a bunch and now I'm a lot more comfortable with them, although I still don't like the biological horrors).

If it's loot that you claim at the Quicksilver merchant, it's shareable among all your saves.

Otherwise, it's only good on that new save. I now have a few different saves that each have different reasons for being awesome, and I really wish there was a way to combine them into one super-awesome save.

But that doesn't work with knowledge of blueprints or things like that.

Expedition rewards can be claimed on any save
Meaning, rewards that you get at the end of the expedition.
Phase progress rewards are expedition save specific, meaning they’re only good for the expedition save itself.
But the end of each phase does give rewards you keep across saves, stuff like posters etc.
Also, you keep the expedition save, and can continue playing on it if you choose.
At the end of the expedition, it’s converted to a “normal” save.

I have my draw distance turned way down (GPU is a potato) so I can't mark points very far out ("missed terrain") or see things very far away.

Oh, someone put the most lovely base in that starting system called a gift to late starters or something. It had the pillar controls enclosed and a close range TP to get to it from the base. It was super slick.

Sweet. I kept wondering what that base was, but never went and looked. I did my sentinel pillar on Oger Alpha (something like that), since it's aggressive sentinels and you have to find an anchor on that world. Third anchor.

The way the Anomaly teleporter works is it allows you to download base data directly from other players who are present - unfortunately the list doesnt refresh when players leave, so the best thing to do is wait for an Autosave in front of the teleporter, reload, and check the list.

Some people use this to play Anomaly roulette to gain access to different galaxies, reloading over and over lol.

No, you have to get them. If you stopped through the Ilongkar system, there's a good planet there. Fly around in storm, land next to crystal, nip out and grab, get back in ship. You only need two, so only land next to two or more.

Expeditions 101

What is an expedition?

It is a community event run during a specific time period. For the revisited expeditions, each one will last two weeks. Every player starts with a fresh save, in the same planetary system and usually on the same planet.

Each expedition has five phases, each consisting of multiple milestones you must accomplish. You can do these in any order, except where a unique item is required from one before doing another. Each milestone gives rewards to help you on your way; each phase gives rewards that can be claimed on all saves later, as can the reward for completing the entire expedition.

Why play expeditions?

You can get special rewards that are not available through other means; bragging rights; exposure to new content or new aspects of NMS gameplay that you may not have encountered; each expedition usually has a fun narrative and/or lore.

Expedition 8 - Polestar FAQ: General questions

• This expedition converts to normal mode when you have claimed all rewards. If you wish to help other expedition travellers, leave one reward unclaimed.
• You can summon the Anomaly after your first warp in the freighter, in Phase 1.
• You do not have the base computer blueprint in this expedition at all.

Expedition 8 - Polestar FAQ: Getting milestones done

• You get a warp hypercore, needed to build the Singularity Engine, from the "Well-Oiled Machine" milestone in Phase 1. Save it and you won't need storm crystals. If you really want them, marsh planet Erylanaith Otsu (R4 system Anggierfo) has them.
• 🏴‍☠️ Need pirates? Go to high conflict (T3) systems, with valuable items on you to attract their attention. Also, when you have the hyperdrive plans at the end of Phase 5, every 3 starship warps you'll have a resue event.
• For more freighter hyperdrive range, install the "salvaged hyperdrive upgrade" given from the "Engage Engines" milestone in Phase 1.
• You do not need to install the "Amplified Warp Shielding" freighter tech; no milestones require you to go to a red, green or blue star system. If you want it, buy a C class upgrade for any starship weapon, install and dismantle it for cadmium, then multiply it by chromatic metal to get the amount desired.
• If you want to get your frigate expeditions done sooner, send them out on missions and recall them right away; this still counts as "completion".

Expedition 8 - Polestar FAQ: Bugs

• 🪲 The large refiner and stellar extractors on freighters are buggy. Babysit refiners, save before using them with a save point, consider turning off multiplayer too first, report issues to Hello Games.
• 🪲 If you trade in your starting freighter for another, your current freighter base may not transfer to the new one, even with the workaround of leaving an item in the old freighter inventory to force transfer prompts to be displayed.

if the discovery tab for the planet shows for the faun a listing, no fauna, but there is not an X icon in the system icons, then anotehr planet may have fauna, just not that one

Oh, okay. So when you've dismissed your freighter, you're not seeing others' freighters? Are you seeing other players in the system though? You can check Nearby Players in Network settings to verify.

Markers are super tricky for the record. Sometimes it's best / easiest to be in group with another player, if you're trying to board someone's freighter for one of the milestones.

Did you check the Nearby Players to see if you can try joining any of them?

fun addition: the people in my freighter did not show up-- no marker, no ship, no avatar, but a hovering red bar for when you look at another person's ship while standing right next to it

The people you mention here aren't in your group though? That could be due to their Network Settings, if their markers are set to only Friends or Group.

I'm unclear about the red bar? Is that like a health bar? Super weird. Is that when PvP is set to Anyone?

Oh I feel your pain here. I was finishing last night too. I finished the derelect freighter and then my switch glitched and I list that progress. Reran the freighter and was in sight of the last teleport station when I got killed by some of those monstrosities...there was 30 minutes to go. Lost the QS and missed out on the leviathan. Still processing it.

Polestar Expedition pro tip: If someone invites you to their game in the starting system, say yes, then trade visits to each of your freighters. You'll need to dismiss your freighter to get to theirs. This completes one of the objectives!

So far there's been 8 expeditions, 4 in 2021 and 4 in 2022, the holiday season of '21 had expeditions 1-4 rerun as shorter versions, and this holiday season we saw 5-8 rerun as shorter versions. There is likely to be an expedition 9 after this one, but as far as going back and re-running the others, I'm not sure. They may eventually have them being rerun in some capacity year round, but we have yet to see

The main quicksilver reward is for completing Phase 4 (at least on Switch).

However, the quicksilver will be tied to that save, you can't carry it over to your main. BUT any non-consumable QS items you buy on that save will be unlocked for your main save to claim.

So complete phase 4, go to the anomaly QS merchant and spend it all, then hop on your main save and claim all QS stuff you bought there.

Look stated couple minutes ago how to find materials to build the submarine. Start menu > Catalogs and guides > Raw materials exotic > click active copper and use galaxy map when in space and it should send you to a plant with active copper. Now you probably don't need active copper ,but you can look at the materials and track them down using this method.

But if memory serves me right don't you get the submarine after completing a certain mission?

You should be able to talk to the fleet management entity, build a fleet room if necessary, and when you interact with your fleet room it asks if you want to download frigate fuel plans

Man, I can see why the Singularity Drive is so often requested for the main game. For one, it's PRETTY.

NOTE: there's a bug at the end where it won't show all phases as complete after you did actually complete them. Saving and then reloading fixes it, though.

the gui is like this

quite intuitive and simplistic

you can also unlock previous expedition rewards/twitch exclusives that you missed to your account, so you can claim them at any time on any save

(for the twitch things you need to have your internet turned off so it doesnt ping the server)

anyway, you can then simply choose which thing to edit via the tab

choose which save to edit

for the blueprints, go to discovery

What may be causing your confusion is that Expedition saves do not follow the same rules - because it's a limited time game mode, the 3hr playtime requirement is waived and you simply trigger a battle every 5 warps.

I just had a strange experience. Speaking of someone visiting your freighter. I went down to collect copper so I can refine Chromatic Metal. When I got back to my freighter and tried to use my refiner it said it was being used by someone else and I lost my copper. Now I got to go find some more copper. I think someone got onto my freighter and stole my copper. haha!!

yeah they aren't stealing it exactly. there's a bug with refiners on freighters but also apparently still a bug with multiplayer and freighter gear, you should report this to hello games. they claimed to have fixed it in a patch a while ago but apparently that bug is back.

Good to know, before using the refiner on the freighter I will have to remind myself to get out of multiplayer first.

yes, do that, but also be aware that the freighter refiners are buggy, try processing small amouonts each time

tedious but that way if it glitches you don't lose too much

I am going to go ahead and leave the game on and leave the freighter where it is atm so ppl can use it. It seems that it's pretty busy. Fun game!! This is my fourth save spot. I just got left the Elucid Galaxy on my Exobiology save and just before I left that Galaxy I got the Pretty Gold and white Living ship! I am excited about this new expedition.

Yes. Place a save beacon in your freighter

i went to the youtuber whatever teleport, and i got spat into a radioactive ocean with my ship on the water >> i hope that's just a bug for the switch version since it can't use multiplayer features, but that's kinda an ugly oversight HG wouldn't remove those "player made" bases from the teleporter for the switch version

bases should render fine, but likely it was slow to render in for you for whatever reason

I would recomend save before you teleport (go to ship, get in and out)

then you can reload the restore point if that happens on arrival

for a long time my rule of thumb was slways save before teleport, I put a save point by every teleporter I build even now
