Tainted metal refines for it at a nice ratio. I prefer scrapping high class ships at a station though. You lose a bit of money, but you get modules to sell back to the tech vendors for nanites, and you get storage augments, which are handy for adding slots to your ships for free.

B-Class shuttles have 20% chance to drop 1 Storage Augmentation.
All other B-Class ships have 35% chance to drop 1 Storage Augmentation.
A-Class shuttles have 50% chance to drop 1-2 Storage Augmentation.
All other A-Class ships have 65% chance to drop 1-2 Storage Augmentation.
All S-Class ships have 100% chance to drop 1-3 Storage Augmentation.

Avoid shuttles unless nothing else is around

Is scrapping ships rly the fastest nanites? Modules sell for 20-300 nanites, and you get a couple modules per ship. (Def not more than one s class) While cooking stellar ice cream gives 50 nanites per ice cream. All the ingredients (except eggs or milk I forget the recipe) are growable crops. Finding a super fauna rich area and setting up a collector nets u 40+ eggs per feeding/cycle

The only downside to food is that chronos eats more time than he does food

I also have spare stacks of ice cream (perma) if anyone needs some

@winter obsidian to add to this, it's not quite right. These percentages don't apply to a percentage chance to drop. These rates are part of the seed, so what they actually mean are, for example, of all the c class models in a pool, 20% of them will drop one augment. And it'll be the same ship at the same class that drops it every time

I think it has potential to be better than feeding Cronus, but I’d have to find a good system.

The limiting factor for me would be money, I’m close to billions but not quite there. For cooking the limitation is animal products. If I could find a recipe that doesn’t use milk I could do it faster. Egg alternatives are silicone eggs via chromatic metal.

Scrapping for nanites can take some finagling

I find it best to go around and find a system with a first-wave S or A class that drop good modules

That way you buy, scrap, reload, buy, scrap, reload

Finally after 130+ hours I've found a ship I like. Happened coincidentally too on the way to the galactic core. A clean beige colour I rarely see with wooden like tips and gorgeous purple sails.

This is not how it works

In most cases starship (and freighter) class is not set in stone

It's all procedurally generated so you can get different classes on different reloads

The % chance of a ship spawning in S-class depend on system economy tier

But even in wealthy systems you get 2% chance for an ship to spawn as S-class

5% in outlaw systems (dunno if it's the same for freighters)

There is no system to which you can travel and find a guaranteed S-class freighter

How hard is it to find the squid exotic naturally?

naturally meaning... just randomly as you play

well, could take 100 hrs of natural gameplay or more, for a couple reasons

first, you're playing the odds on the system's exotic being a squid vs a royal/ball/guppy/whatever.

then, you're playing the odds even further that it'll land near you when you're in that system. you could easily be in a squid system and just leave before seeing it

so theoretically you could wait/reload at a trading post in every system you visit until you see an exotic, then you'd eventually see a squid. but it would be hours and hours of waiting around instead of playing

You can then check #nms-questions for learning how to acquire glyphs. Or check the FLG channel to see if you can get a ride to a specific galaxy+glyph coordinates location so you can farm for a specific ship. Sometimes players also post findings in here, #nms-photomode-gallery and #explorers-archive but I think the search functions above are the easiest way to get to a starship design you're looking for. If it's any squid design you'd like, you can ask if someone can "trade" one so you can get it for free here, in #no-mans-sky or #nms-lfg-or-trades

Only ship w/ that kind of wing design is an Explorer, but those don't even have the cockpit design you want which is fighter exclusive.

If we ever get an update where we can scrap ships for their designs and apply it to other ships though, then you've got yourself a winner!

When you would scrap a ship, you would get a random part from it. This could be sold for a bunch of money, or be used to mod another ship. These parts could take the place of the sellable junk items you get from scraping ships. You could apply it to the ship with nanites. When you would add it to a ship, it would change the look of the ship to have the part you applied. It would apply the paint colors of the base ship, unless you change the cockpit, which would change the colors of the ship to the color of the new cockpit. If you would mix parts from two different classes of ships, you would get a new class called a hybrid ship, which takes a small part of the bonuses from each ship class in the combo. You couldn’t take parts from exotics or living ships.

Hey, so I've been getting back into nms lately and I'm trying to figure out the best ship class to use regularly. I'm usually going around to a bunch of different systems carrying a lot of materials, doing a lot of sidequests, making bases, and building up my freighter. Which class do you guys think would be best?

I really like the look and feel of the new solar ships but the storage isn't great

Really depends on your style. Fighter seems to be the general go to from what I've seen and shuttles are seen as the weakest link. Other than that, each type has its own benefit.

I think mostly ppl go for which one they like the look of more. Plus, once you get your freighter beam and drives installed, you wont have to worry too much about slots.

What's types have you enjoyed the look of so far?

I really enjoy the animations on the solar ships. I think what I'll do is use my solar as my main ship, use my freighter for the majority of my storage, and have my hauler on standby for quests that require heavy storage. Thanks for the advice!

Some ships like the solat ships and living ships have some advantages . The living ships need other fuel for everything but cant be Upgraded in cargo space, And the solar ships reguel their pulse engine by themselfs

If it has a lot more storage than you current ship and you're still in the early game, sure you could fix that one.
You can also scrap it for units and buy something else.

It's a little more complicated than that, but essentially, yes - any time you're using posted coords for a crashed ship, multitool, or player farm, disabling MP prior to entering the system is a good idea, both to prevent the possibility of another player grabbing it before you can, and so you do not do so to someone else.

If you don't already have a specific ship in mind, one thing I like to do is ship hunt at space stations and scrap A-S ships as they come in while I'm waiting around. Then when I do find a ship I like, I'll have plenty of nanites to upgrade it from A class, which is usually much easier to find than S and also gives you a guaranteed set of stats.

get a ton of S class in the first few rounds. (like two S Class ships in 5 mins)

happened in 2 separate occasions in Outlaw systems. It might be dumb luck, but I found it odd it happened twice.

Yeah basically make a manual save, go to the same space station as him and then trade your ship to an npc the npc will spawn at your ship and your friend can buy it then your reload the save and you both have it

There are storage augments you can get that allow for 1 free slot

That's typically the way to go, for at least part of it (the last, most expensive part)

You can get those by scrapping ships, the better class ones - A,S - B is ok C isn't worth the time mostly

I'd skip shuttles too if you do that

Visit rich (or other synonyms for wealthy) systems, or outlaw systems - they have a higher spawn chance there. But it still comes down to the proc gen, so patience is your best friend. Trading posts on planets typically have a higher traffic flow.
