Used to be I could land on the edge of the platform of a trade post without actually landing on the pad, you know to maximize number of NPC ships landing, but I seem unable to do it after the recent updates. Anyone else having trouble with that?

Sort of true - ship stats are only randomized (within a certain range) when they spawn, but actually have a fixed set of stats for each class based on the seed, so when you upgrade via nanites, you get the fixed stats for that seed. If you were to reload and re-upgrade, you would get the exact same stats for that ship's seed/model.

I've never rolled an s-class with better stats than upgrading from an a or lower personally, the chance of doing so is very rare
I've tried hunting a higher roll s in systems with a ship I like, but upgrading always wins so far, though I have notoriously bad luck

I'm not sure how rare high stats are vs just the general rarity of S class ships, but regardless, you're not wrong that it is difficult to come out ahead.
I've seen some pretty high-stat Exotic ships, but there aren't any lower class versions to upgrade to compare them to.
I've also seen plenty of S class ships with one or two stats a bit higher than they'd be if upgraded, but the other two or three significantly lower.

I'm not sure how rare high stats are vs just the general rarity of S class ships...
my understanding is that natural s-class can roll roughly +/- 5% in each base category stat vs the upgrade, so even though it might roll +5% damage, it could also roll -5% hyperdrive/maneuverability, it's a lot of moving parts

Sounds about right, yeah.
Even then, the rolls are capped within the standard range for that ship type, so if the upgraded version had close to the max, chances are your S class with random stats will be worse.
Likewise if the upgraded version had stats at the bottom end, the random one would generally be better.

I usually say chase design over anything else, because at worst you're looking at 5% difference in performance vs a potentially perfect roll. you can make that up with good mod rolls, it's a meaningless difference

I still chase that perfect ship that is both beautiful and powerful, perhaps one of each type, but that's more because it gives me something to do rather than because it's necessary for doing well in the game.

If youāre looking specifically S tier and exotics
Pirates is your best bet

With that technically it should be a 5% a system might have exotics instead of the usual 2% on T3 systems

Maneuverability in particular is bugged when viewing a ship that is not your current primary ship, showing instead the maneuverability that your current primary ship would have if it were the same class + installed tech as the ship you are viewing. It's pretty lame.

Yes, yes it does. It's very frustrating for ship-hunting.
For ships you don't yet own, there does appear to be some variation so what I described isn't 100% accurate, but the Maneuverability numbers you see are not what you will get.
So now if I see a ship I like, I make a save real quick and just buy it to see what the real numbers are, either reloading or scrapping if I don't like it.

My bad. Have you tried the traditional method. You start the starbirth quest in a random place First, then you travel to the target system and restart the mission there.

also, if you know the system of the freighter you want, you can just follow the steps above to get the space fight there - you'll get the model but you may need to try multiple times to get the class you want
storage can be maxed out even if you get less starting slots and depends on the class you get, but the class itself can't be changed

it has 230 base maneuver which is insane
that's the highest base I seen for any living ship so far
but the lotus feet....

what you need to do is be in another galaxy and trigger the starbirth quest where it spawns a random living ship

check the living ship of that first incase it spawns a really cool one, if it doesn't then warp to the target destination and be literally on top of the chords on the regular crashed ship and restart the quest

when the quest is restarted there's a chance the ship you're right at will turn into a living ship
if not reload your autosave

you use the out of bounce mission restart method to target a specific crash site to spawn the living ship and since each living ship design is seeded it will always be the same ship on the specific crash sites
