There are a few primary animal species. Robotic, Bonecats, etc. Each category gets different color effects from the same material. I'd guess the cats and dogs are the organic chart, but I'm not an animal expert.

So exotic fauna are on exotic/anomaly planets like the one you are on. For example, there are "calcishroom"/Mushroom planets that have Will-O-Wisp looking fauna. They are a set creature rather then being made from randomized parts. Irrc, colors can still be different? Regardless, generally they are -really- cool pets.

These are sort of inbetween, but no. They are still made from randomized parts, just robot parts. There is also a smaller selection. You'll notice some similar looking fauna species like the ever popular Diplos.

And then more unique ones that aren't pulled from the pool of parts. It's... a lot. Procedural generation but there are patterns to pick out.

I think when you put something for the anatomy, it will change to a different exotic. I have a flying rocket box exotic and it's offspring became a blood dripping bubble after putting lots of storm crystals and some other mats in the anatomy slot

Like a dude make a massive sand worm with 9 heads. It’s edited in save files so the data is compatible with cross platform. The egg inherits the abnormal though source code compatible data and thus works for other systems. Is that a thing?

I did twice, and the underbelly remains red-orange. I looked up some photos and through the channel here, and saw that the majority of dragonflies have red-orange underbelly

oh most definitely. check out the top pins for tips on what materials to use in the sequencer. especially with size, color and personality traits which are the most predictable, compared to the other physical features like limbs, which can turn out to be super random

so going back to your original question in #nms-questions:

for robotic companions/pets what are good resources to change its look

for any type of companion, changing the pet's physical features, other than size, color and personality traits, the sequencer is VERY unpredictable.
i've never tried sequencing robotic pets so i'm not sure about their limitations when it comes to changing their physical traits.

based on other players' reports here and subreddit, the physical traits are super random for all forms of companions. so there hasn't been any resource like a spreadsheet of sorts, available, guiding what kind of let's say head design you'll get with what as an example.

I'll illustrate a scenario: say you have a curved head robo, and you wanted a triangle. You do an overdose at 150 which changes the back. You breed that one again through splitter, which may result in different changes.

Ik it’s more of a “mod” thing, but if I had a bunch of companion eggs and the script with all the head things I could tell the egg to have a different head when it hatches
