How do the pets work? I haven't dabbled in it at all. I just know we had some like eggs or something as rewards, never really used those, just stashed them away

And I saw a "get milk" mission in the hub, and it made me laugh but then I found a cool looking glitch planet yesterday and it had this native life which was basically a metallic pillar looking thing

All you have to do with most animals is craft creature pellets to feed them, but some require special food and some cannot be interacted with by normal means.

After being fed, you can either harvest food ingredients from them or tame them instead to keep them as pets. You can have up to 18 pets and hold up to 18 eggs.

Getting 18 pets is kinda expensive tho because you have to unlpck additional slots with that special currency

It's easy when you know how. You can always find players willing to help with nanites tho, if you're having trouble. If you make a creative save all the slots are open from the start.

Yes, all of the ones I listed should be rideable

Remember that it's impossible to interact with fauna while you are airborne

so any fauna that it doesn't seem plausible to interact with from the ground (like flying worms, birds etc) can't be adopted

and using your jetpack won't help you adopt those that actually can be adopted

You can get eggs for them from other players who have them though. The only ones you can't ride at all without mods are the bone worm and small birds/bugs/bats/swarms, burrowers, some anomalous ones and fish.

These are the only cats I have available, but I have quite a few flying lizards an eagle and a worm if you're interested.

If you're trying to make it small like the other one, you could throw Emeril into the dye slot while you're at it to make it white.

Eggs can be odd with these guys for some reason tho, cats/dogs usually have a different variant based on their gender. This one only has a slanted ear (possibly), but they can have entirely different parts. I've also noticed the fur texture doesn't load in right with their offspring. I think it's a bug.

The synthetic creature I posted is one of the fastest I've seen for land animals. Other solid options for speed are striders and T. Rex as long as they're not massive. They climb steep terrain very well. I have a Tyrannosaurus collection, but no striders. @twilit dune

Flying mounts are more limited in the vanilla game. Most don't truly fly, they just sort of hover around slowly. Butterflies are pretty much your best bet there. Edited creatures give a few more options and varieties though. Mainly worms, eagles and lizards with different parts, sizes and flight behaviors.

It's a pet that was created by a modder so there was no way to get one unless you knew someone who could give you an egg. The small 1m ones are usually just a result of failed gene sequencing. They can't actually be made larger without save editing, but the other slots work fine. That or they simply were never edited to begin with, which is not ideal..

It depends how they're made too, my 5.6m one definitely soars in the clouds if I catch enough air off a mountain or something, but I also have 4m and 8m ones that fly low and slow. I don't even own a PC tho, so there's no way for me to determine what went into them much less alter it. :/

My daily flyers are 3m and 4m tho. Would try making them a touch smaller and see what happens if I could figure that part out.

The slow and low vs high and fast thing is due to a weird property they have called "behavior" or smth that's normally always set to their current creature type, and nothing normally ever changes this i think besides maybe very broad creature types like protoflyer, but changing flyinglizard's behavior to something that isn't flyinglizard makes them fly very fast and no longer eat the ground constantly

I haven't experimented with many other creature types/behaviors but I picked the brainless behavior because it's funny

Hahaha, that it is. Ours are crazy fast, but they should usually fly just above tree level. Ngl, they nosedive underground if you try to sprint on level terrain rather than at an incline. Especially on planets with intricate cave systems, but turning sharply usually slows them down enough for the ground to render properly if things start getting hairy. They don't like to fly over deep waters though haha, they like to go swimming and leave you stranded if you don't have aqua jet landers.

is there someone who can give me a little context on exactly what is happening? i can see he's creating a cave layer, but does this need to be made in a specific place, like at the bedrock? does it need to be inside a natural formation of some sort?

i've been searching for one rare underground for a couple of hours now, looking up every hint or strategy i can find

getting really frustrated

Honestly imo its much easier to just look for PoIs with small cave entrances/openings (even if it's just a couple square meters worth of cave) and scan those for 1-2 minutes and repeat (at a different spot) until you got it.

It usually takes 4-8 tries, (~20mins) which is time consuming for sure, but that method shown is just as time consuming imo and rarely worked for me

That's probably the only way to go if you're on one of those planets that's nothing but jagged mountains all over. The only caves I find on those ones seem to never have animals in them. Haven't seen the terrain manipulator trick, but it looks like it could take longer than finding one would just to set it up. Buying a stack of maps and looking for PoIs seems easiest.

But you might be searching for them for a while even with that strategy.

The main ones that get super big IME are spiders, triceratops/diplos, arthropods and walking buildings. Here's my largest found of each of those, the companion height system works off of a different scale and goes much higher when using growth hormone at the sequencer (up to like 12 or 14m)

You could potentially get an egg from someone or use the bot to obtain one, but you still won't be able to interact with it in any way after summoning without mods. The only aquatic creatures that I'm aware you can interact with are crabs and the expedition jellyfish. Not even sure about the jelly tbh @snow marlin

The first two worms are impossible to find in the wild, but all else could possibly exist out there (all the beetles and the middle bird are from the wild), but flying lizards/worms cannot be adopted in the vanilla game from the wild

Try using frost crystals as dye in the sequencer.

Never done it with flower dogs lol results may vary.

The only way to get an egg for flying creatures you can't normally have is by the good graces of another player who has one ready to go or using bot delivery, which still requires save editing for that egg to be useful and multiplayer still needs to be enabled for it.

Some are abandoned, some completely uncharted, and the rest populated.
In abandoned mode every system is "abandoned" even ones that would be uncharted in normal mode.

Yes, they are the same creature type as spiders/crabs/mantis things, internally referred to as just spider

I think the only thing that gives different stuff per it's permutations are diplos, which are technically triceratops
