I somehow didn't have glyphs turned on in the screenshots at that time (10 months ago!) ... I've been trying to return to any systems I visited that I do have the glyphs for adjacent to this photo in my photo archive, but nothing so far... sigh.

Same issue with this guy. Didn't realize the in-game camera doesn't capture glyphs for people on PC. Kind of weird, imo, but I wish I had realized so I could have made note of which planet. That one is adorable! They are kind of similar except mine was grayish white.

Yeah, to get the glyphs in photomode you have to use external capture methods like Steam's F12 or the game bar screenshot thing

There's a mod I love that removed the waiting for the HUD to go away because I already know what the buttons do

It took me a while to learn about the steam photomode thing, but also I didn't know at the time that sometimes the glyphs weren't showing... I just wasn't paying attention, assuming they were getting captured and not noticing they weren't visible (I needed to hit shift to make them show) ... so I have several days of screenshots from mystery places 😅

I did find that a few of the screenshots from that period do have glyphs, so I have been traveling to every system I can that I went to 10 months ago, just to see if there's a cold planet with that little purple guy on it, but no dice so far :(
It doesn't help that Steam was changing the time stamp on the photos sometimes based on when they were uploaded vs. when they were actually taken, so they're all out of order, and like a week of screenshots all have the same date and time

Realizing I shouldve asked in this channel instead:
Question: anyone know what dye-injector substance (or other method) would allow me to transform the green grunt on the left into something close to the beautiful purple/green version on the right? (I have given up trying to find the purple grunt... searched the whole region where I thought I got the photo last year, but no luck)
The dye injector guides with example pics of each substance's outcome don't seem to show these vibrant colors, they're all more muted ... does applying a color over multiple generations make it richer?

well I'm getting a lot closer to replicating the "lost protogek" I couldn't re-find...
but two things: the purple color isn't as close to indigo as the one I'm trying to copy, and the eyeballs have no detail (no pupils) which makes it look a bit more creepy than I want it to... may have to find a totally different parent (I have another one I used as a parent that got close, but its feathers always have a multi-color pattern no matter what substance I use for dyeing the egg)

Yeah, they're janky, though flying around on a giant eagle bigger than my ship is kinda fun... Until it flied through a mountain. It can be egged, though, and modified. The one I was given was white, and way too big, sized it down and made it red in the sequencer but it's still buggy even being "born" in game.

Two things I found helpful for finding robot companions. The pet menu will offer batteries, not creature pellets as bait when you land, and from a freighter scan you can see the whole planet as solely ground type. Never seen fliers, or swimmers, on a synthetic world.

Trying to make it bigger using the Egg Sequencer will revert it's size to 1.0, which is it's normal maximum since it was never given size bounds so that's the default

The only way to make it bigger would be through save editing directly

They’re more common in yellow star systems. Are you still in Euclid? If you can get to Eissentam, it’s a lush galaxy and has a higher chance for lush planets. Also, lush planets have many different biomes, here’s a list of them!

You would require a mod to tame the pet yourself or using a save editor to make one a pet/egg.

players are able to gift such pet if they have an egg of one, without a mod tho this pet cannot be interacted with.

Ease of access, a save editor once set up properly doesn’t take all that much time to use, other benefits can range from simple currency to giving the player items no longer accessible.

Duping in some cases can be time consuming where the save editor is just a nice few clicks.

Closest to black you’ll get is this type of grey.

This was done with a save editor, the colours aren’t natural with the sequencer, and not available for that type of wing palette for the first flyinglizard in the photo

Although if you want grey with blue wings, try solanium

Correct, save editors can be used to give pets colour variations not possible with the sequencer, sizes that are above the in game limit and other attributes.

Not out of game range, out of sequencer, the sequencer allows for a variety of combinations but the editor can allow experimentation with more colour seeds that the sequencer won’t allow, could be narrower to what you may want.

A lot of it is just trial and error with colour variations, can also just override colour but no fun.

A while back I figured out how to extract color info from a discovered creature (from save discovery json data) and apply it to a pet… but it was only for a “bird” (flying dragon thing) … not sure how it works in other creatures

The bone worm is a save edit, happy to give you one however they are buggy and don’t work as well as other worm pets.

This is because the bone worm model is only present in the Sandworm creature ID whereas all other worm models are in the flyingsnake ID players save editing will use the ID that allows the most interaction.

Sandworm ID does not allow the player to interact with the creature at all, and the flyingsnake does.

General question, how does a save file edited pet work? Like, do you find a creature you want and then do the process or?

Work as in? Can you interact with it? Does it move around the environment?

To answer the last part, sorta, each creature has its own creature ID for example in the game’s files a high flying bird is called flyinglizard you would use that ID and input the creature descriptors form the ID, and input the seed value for colour and creature.

I remember one magical moment I had some odd time ago, I was traveling and came across a planet where briefly a big shadow crossed the ground. Now that I look at it, it do be kinda goofy, but in a good way. If I do the genetic sequencer on an egg that's been file edited, and is a bird or whatnot, will that affect the egg negatively? Like if I do an unstable mutation, will it crash my game or sum?

No most will work normally while others won’t, it depends on the creature, but you won’t crash your game from using the sequencer, you might just break the creature.

Not really, the risk comes from messing up something during save editing. Just back up your save and you’ll be fine.

This is something the sequencer won’t really have a specific relation to but you can experiment with.

Speed is determined by factors like creature ID and size.

For some creatures the bigger they are like Beetles, Birds will move at faster speeds the bigger they are whereas other creatures like Dino’s may move slower the larger they are.

You really just have to mess with the creature itself and size alterations.

I assumed they were deliberate because almost all the other weird animals in this game seem to follow at least some basic parameters—2, 4, or 6 legs, bird-like, dinosaur, fish-like, etc. They threw some other strange ones in, especially recently. But that is the only one so far that has such an oddly specific mammalian feature—which in this case is actually creepy. The other ones that are based on actual animals don't even have udders. It was definitely a creative decision of all time. 😆

No, since their sizes are default, so the biggest they can be "naturally" is 1 meter tall, which is the default when they don't specify anything for them

For comparison, ones in the wild are around 1.7m tall in companion height sizes

Oh and also just to mention, it’s not much fun to make a bird/dragon very large anyway because they become so big they get “dismissed” when they fly upward far at all. They’re harder to interact with when huge, and if riding them you just sort of disappear on their back, and it’s harder to control and see anything.

You can do it if you can save edit the file. Just saying you’re not missing out on much.
But even normal size is quite large.
Here’s me on one after I made it smaller to be easier to interact with.

I made that one by figuring out the right parts I wanted using the creature creator web app that’s out there, plus trying different seeds for color until landing on the one I wanted
