@clever cargo Gene mutations occur in sequence based on a pet's current features unless you overdose. The only way to predict what you'll get is by having a full descriptor list of the parts for the pet type and knowing which descriptors are used for its current parts - incredibly difficult without looking in JSON with a save editor, and at that point it's far easier to simply edit the descriptors to alter the pet exactly how you want.

@clever cargo There are exactly 2 potential outcomes when you do mutations. From 0-100% dose equates to a % chance of a basic mutation - that will only advance descriptor/s by 1 step in sequence by fauna type. Overdose I'm unsure of what the odds or the precise results are, except that basic fauna type will remain, and bonescale is nearly always affected, altering the head/body/limb size proportions.

Was resequencing an egg and after a few go’s I left one of the slots empty and when it was done resequencing it told me that slot’s trait was now heritage from the parent, while the other sequences told me whether the trait decreased or not, so did it just reset the trait?

If I were to guess, it 'inherited' the trait without change, so no increase nor decrease. I doubt it reset it.

correct, the tooltip information for the egg will treat the egg you put in as the 'parent' so anything you don't change will be inherited from the previous version of the egg

@somber oracle Speed is a function of size when tamed vs adjusted size - in most cases, the bigger you go, the slower, because speed doesnt scale up in proportion. The 3 major exceptions to this rule are mechafauna, flying beetles, and flying snakes.

So find the biggest fartfish you can tame,and reduce its size to minimum that allows riding.

Hello, I have a question about eggs. I found a T-Rex that really looks like a T-Rex. Basically it measures 1.9m. With its eggs, I managed to have a maximum size of 5m. I would like to have one of 7m but if I take an egg from a Trex which is already 5m, the sequencer refuses to increase it more, I can only decrease the size. Is there a way to increase it further or the max size will still be 5m?

@crude briar A modder may be able to tame and ride that bird, but if they give you an egg, the pet you get will be completely unable to be interacted with, let alone ridden.
There are 4 types of fauna that are untameable yet fully functional as pets. The Whispering Horror given as Expedition 3 reward, Flying Snakes from Expd4 egg reward, Sentinel Quad from Expd5, and Flying Lizards (dragons/eagles/griffins), which I'd bet money were meant to be the Expd6 reward, but by the end of Expd5 modders/save editors had already been taming them for over half a year, had realized HG had disseminated the code for them to be used as pets, and had given out thousands of eggs for em, lol.

So long as the large majority of the community agrees on 1 simple principle, NMS will continue to grow and reinvent itself, whether or not HG continues to update it.

with the eggs you have 4 separate slots you can put items into to modify the creature, there is size and color which are fairly simple, then behaviors which is a bit more complex, and mutations, if you ever see 2 creatures that act very similarly but look different, mutating an egg can result in the resulting creature gaining or losing parts similar to others of that 'type'

once you get to it, a large metal sphere like structure, there is a merchant there that sells "Void Eggs" for quicksilver, a currency you gain for doing missions provided that that location, and when you're carrying that you will start a quest chain to get a living ship

once you do get to the point where you have the egg and have done the quest it isn't a bad idea to make a save and just see what designs you can get, each system will have a, sizable number, of different versions, and if you see one you like online they'll often have the system and planet you need to go to to get it, though i've never tried getting a specific ship so can't say how long it would take

on any space station, the npc next to the portal, if you buy the distress signal planetary charts you can search for more of those, some will be crashed npcs to help but others will be abandoned and free to take

one piece of advice I will give however, have you used the photo mode yet?

when you're using it on a planet you'll see a pattern of glyphs on the lower left of the screen, if you're playing on PC you can take a screenshot with your computer and not the game to easily save an image with those glyphs for reference, but otherwise if you can record what's there you can easily return to places you've seen before, otherwise once you get going and have dozens of systems under your belt it'll be hard to go back to a place you were before

so on pc you can open a quick menu with the X key and then use the Q and E keys to go from one option to the next, the exact keybinds are on screen when its open so check that since my memory may be a bit fuzzy, but you can quickly recharge tech using it, summon your ship to you, but also use the photo mode, i'd suggest giving that a go since it is a very useful tool all around

i'm learning 2 things, my discipline for taking photos with glyphs is poor, and so is my treatment of small creatures in chasing them down to photo

The egg sequencer? You put the egg in, add different materials to the other four slots to change different traits. I think the nms wiki has tables of all the materials/effects, is there something specific you’re trying to get?

You dont need to fill all 4 slots, and you can resequence the same egg repeatedly for growth, colour, and behaviour - colour you simply override the last round, but for growth and behaviour you can hit the caps with a single egg no matter how far the parent was from it.

Big birds are save edited in. They can only grow as big as the person responsible designed them. I have some that get real big, but most are capped at a mediums size.

When these things get pulled out of the game files and made able to ride, there's some designing involved. Features, size, coloring, flight paths... Depending on who did the work, that's what you got. I'm no expert. This is just my understanding

You can tame them with a mod which only adds the interaction prompt, the other features are all there. You can save edit to make them more, agreeable when it comes to actually riding them but once you get one you should be able to do everything normally including putting eggs through the sequencer. Some other animals like small birds can't lay eggs but the big birds are fair game.

I was trying to increase size using egg sequencer....but everything i put in shows size decrease

there's a bug right now it seems, same thing been happening to me where it will show the opposite stats of what I am actually adding

It's not a bug, what happens is every time you increase/decrease size, you do so by 0.5m. If an egg will hatch a pet 0.1m shy of the cap, the next dose will put it 0.4m past the cap. So if you take an egg from the next generation, no matter what item you dose it with, it will automatically work in whatever direction is required to return it to within what are meant to be its limits.

It's possible you had never overcapped a pet and then tried further increasing the size of the next generation.

A pet right at the cap would merely show Inherited size for any item that would push past it.

I'll check out the Whispering Companion egg, just to verify. It's possible the limits for the creature type were altered, or the hatch size for the awarded egg was set beyond the limit by HG because enough players sent in reports complaining they wanted bigger ones.

It's also possible that overcapping is a recent development - that one I'm not 100% certain about, I cannot recall whether I specifically tested an egg 0.1m shy of the cap, or simply reasoned out the conclusion based on the fact that I've customized pets beyond the cap and then resequenced their eggs to know that all materials will behave to return a pet egg to within natural limits.

I think you might just have a small one. I just checked my collection. 2.5m is my smallest. I have a few that are 3m, and a big eagle at 3.8m. I'm pretty sure those are all max sizes for the particular critter.

@rough palm Doesnt matter what item you used, mutations occur in a specific sequence. For the cat fauna type such as that, a regular mutation changes the head, body, and tail accessories to the next in sequence in the descriptor list. If already on the last accessory on the list, you get the next head, body, or tail in the list with no accessory.
