There is a pretty easy way to find them.
If you click on one of the activated metals in your catalogue tab, the galaxy map will plot a course for you.
Occasionally you'll get a dud planet, but it works the vast majority of times since those metals are found in the same kind of weather as the crystals.

But I have a pile of them and don't mind sharing in any event
