If you are on different platforms, I believe one of you needs to exit your game and join the other person from the main menu. Me and my gf have this issue all the time since she is on PS4 and I'm on Xbox, it never shows a join option for other platform people unless they are in the same instance as me

expeditions are for rewards that you obtain doing them, these rewards carry over to all your saves

In the meantime I'll use more conventional methods

exosuit expansion unit, is giving out on some expedition mission rewards, to get it from an expedition to your normal save is not possible. ?

Assuming they are also on expedition saves, sure.
That said multiplayer can make certain objectives buggy so you want to avoid multiplayer occasionally.
This goes for other modes as well.
