Two methods

1. You both are in the same system

One goes to the target galaxy (the one who has already a base there), the other goes to space anomaly, and when exiting you will be asked where you want to go, to the second player destination or to the galaxy you was before entering the space anomaly

2. Who has the galaxy, just goes in a system from that galaxy, the second player just joins the game and will be already in the galaxy with the first player

But I don't believe you have to fight with anyone, he will ask you to repair his ship,

The only thing I can think of is that you are fighting with the sentinels, but that's not a requirement

pretty sure ship trading is fixed now , you trade a ship to an npc and the other player buys it from the npc before they fly off with it
