you should play solo and do what the main questline asks of you until your reach the Anomaly, where you meet Nada and Polo. If you join multiplayer games before that, it can break quest progression. should only take an hour or two.

It could depend on the custom game mode you select. But overall, over time, after you've had all your upgrades, the game becomes pretty easy. So I can't say the combat is constantly action packed or long term. It's a rather chill game overall
