Easier way these days...
Go to an agreed place (a Featured Base at the anomaly Teleporter list is a good meeting place)...invite other player to join-game. I like 12-towers, because there's a beach right below the Landing Pad where you Rez in.
No "give me your code, I'll give you mine" nonsense involved.
If one player doesn't see the other when they both arrive, One player get in the ship...fly into space, do a quick warp to another system & right back (to reset the "instance")...and land right back on the Beach.
You both need Multiplayer enabled for this to work

Basically, you buy a coordinates for a derelict freighter (5M per one), after that you go into supercruise (or however that thing is called), after you get a notification, you land on freighter, explore it a bit (can get a lot of nanites tho). Gives me a Dead Space vibes

And it worked fine
Then you got lucky, especially the story segment before the anomaly is very error-prone. You may be fine, but theres a big risk you wont be.
Anyone will recommend not to do story in multiplayer for that exact reason.

Not something that you can get help with. You need to get an conomy scanner on your ship(nexus) and search for 3 tier or pirate systems (3%/5% chance respectively though you'll get a stat dropped ship in the pirate systems)

Chat is a better indicator for that, NMS sometimes puts stuff in your freighter if you have a corresponding stack there

If you hit Esc (on PC, dunno your platform) and go to protocol/log, you see your missions and can switch between them
On Expeditions you have the additional Expedition tab that lists the milestones

Suspicious packages can turn into Suspicious mods which can be sold for nanites, all the molds in the game can be refined into runaway mold which will refine into nanites as well as platinum and I believe salvage data

From what I know, both people have to have added each other and all you have to is go to the mode select and go to multiplayer. You should see my session. Also, I'm sure they will fix it in due time. Always happens when games get new updates

If you have the nomad and its scanner upgrades you can scan for drop pods which give you an almost free upgrade on your exosuit (a few easy materials). Also the star chart merchant in any space station will have coordinates to upgrades you can buy for navigation data which can be picked up easily

You can find your own, look for alien structures. Complete the little scenario it gives you successfully then interact with it again. Offer the species item for that system (vykeen dagger, gek relic or korvax casing) and it will give you the portal coordinates.
