Just an fyi, it does seem to be a possible workaround when the normal MP functions aren't cooperating.
I was able to join up with someone that way, even when neither of us were showing up in the mp menu for the other.
Just something to keep in mind.

You know the tricks to getting livign frigates? Get an anomoly detector, make a save,a nd pulse until you see "Whale Song", and ignore any other
