Does your friend know you can just adjust difficulty settings and set purchases to free and can skip the grind then just return to normal difficulty?

It was a new change introduced in 4.0, go to difficulty settings in options, adjust anytime you want (assuming a normal save, permadeath and expeditions are different game modes)

First off, do you own a freighter and organic frigates? Because that's the only way to get living ship upgrades and they are awful to fly without them

Currently, you cannot interact with organic frigates in uncharted systems, so be sure to do these steps in inhabited or abandoned systems.

To obtain your first organic (or living) frigate, send out fleet expeditions until you receive a blueprint for the Dream Aerial. Build the aerial, and then use the pulse drive on your ship. You will get an encounter with an organic frigate that asks many questions to determine the appearance of the frigate. After you finish the questions, claim the living frigate.

After you get your first organic frigate from the Dream Aerial, you can also use Anomaly Detectors to acquire more. These are rare drops from blowing up asteroids.

Activate pulse drive (you may use an Anomaly detector as mentioned). Keep your pulse drive fueled as this may take some time depending on the system. While pulsing, you may see alerts for rare objects, or traders, ignore them. If you use the Anomaly Detector and stop after activation, it will be consumed. Continue pulsing until you receive a Whalesong signal. You will then see a living frigate that you can purchase, with these price ranges:

C-Class: 7,500,000 - 12,500,000 units.
B-Class: 15,000,000 - 25,000,000 units.
A-Class: 26,250,000 - 43,750,000 units.
S-Class: 37,500,000 - 62,500,000 units.

Additional Info
If you feed your organic frigate food items, you will be able to change its stats. A full list of results is not available yet, but anything you feed a specific frigate should always reproduce that same result. For example:
Feeding your frigate item A yields one result. Feeding it item B yields another. If you feed it item A again, it will be the same result you got the first time you fed it item A.

It's also reversible

Probably faster to just adjust your difficulty settings than beg for a common item

@crisp shale @somber edge sorry for double ping but you should start the game playing solo and follow the story line missions starting with the Awakenings mission

Game doesn't track progress properly while in multiplayer session and it's important to learn the basics

So follow the mission objectives there, after 2 hours or so you will get access to place called Space Anomaly, where you can find other players to join

From that point you're free to do whatever you want, but before that please play the story line solo

You can use any refiner, since you need only 1 input slot

But remember refiners are buggy and can delete items if you leave them

So if you plan on refining metal into nanites, I would recommend babysitting that refiner hard

Permadeath and Expeditions are separate game modes (with their own pools / servers, can't connect to anything else)

I’ve always used larval cores for nanites. 50 nanites a pop and if you stumble across a planet with whispering eggs all over it you can get them quick.
