i remember some early proton advocates saying that proton would not hurt the linux native gaming panorama

as in, proton was the tool that would get devs on board making native games

well

i never agreed with that

to me, business was always there

and if a dev can rely on a translation layer doing the work for them, in my mind there's little incentive for a dev to release a native build

however

clearly there's gains to be had, from releasing a game natively on linux

not only from the design standpoint

where when you build a game for linux from the ground up, every other port to other platforms will be smooth

because we're not tied to anything

but also from a community standpoint, we will do Q&A, testing, bug submitting, for a game

there's been cases where native linux versions would trigger bugs that wouldn't trigger on other platforms, simply because the OS in other platforms didn't push as hard

or "covered stuff up"

"compensating for bad deving"

Valve is a force to be reckoned with, especially if they truly manage anti-cheat support.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw was pretty fun yeah, kinda like a modern expanded Freelancer

Elite Dangerous includes Horizon in the base game so you'd at least get planetary landings and exploration via SRV.
It also goes on sale for super cheap very regularly, I paid less than £5 for ED and grabbed Odyssey for £14. Less than £20 so far that I've definitely got my fun from and still continue to get.

Can only speak for myself. I've seen a lot of rule set based AI which scales because without them it can cause major issues and work against your time constraints.
More recently there was a good example of what you are talking about in a hero shooter. It had to be removed/reworked because the team said it was learning too fast and punishing players based on feedback and analytics.
Unfortunately it also comes down to resources and how much time is spent on a feature like that, equating to how much it's appreciated etc depending on the game.

Hopefully someone else also has some examples, I was looking at the AI in Aragami since S0ul posted it also.

well all devs have time to make game worlds have more poly and look more real, making it have good AI should also be a thing

the reason is in all sim games, when you reach a certain level, you know what will happen next like clockwork, so the games gets boring

have stopped playing so many games coz of that

by simultation i mean any simulation, farm sim, strategy sim etc

Two different teams usually and the AI/gameplay team will usually be working on prototyping very early on. You also have to factor in what a game director's decision is. You can work for a year on something and it be scrapped. This actually happened with some enemy NPCs and we had to cut it, however we made the time to work on it after going gold so it could be added to DLC.

if the NPC are too powerful, then probably just cap their damage, or make it so that as they learn one thing, one of their existing ability weakens

You can add diminishing returns but it's not always down to difficulty. You can have a lot of issues and edge cases that can culminate bringing down the overall quality of a game.

I got it back in January(?) iirc, and honestly, I don't recommend getting it in its current state.
A quick read through some of the negative reviews are things I will agree are actual issues with it currently. The game becomes a major slog after the first 4 or 5 hours with some of the worst aspects of rng mixed with poor scaling. The fun factor fell off drastically compared to what the demo and first few hours of the EA had me believe it would become. Also, if you don't have HOTAS/HOSAS, expect a significantly less fun time; ED has much better support for controllers in my experience.

I think it has good potential if the devs actually read the criticism through all the positive reviews. It has that stupid weapon balance mechanic where weapons are level based, but also rarity based, and also rng, so you almost certainly will never have good tech in your ship. The only way to upgrade your ship is essentially by doing more missions, which scale with your character level, but not your weapon level, so all the enemies are absolutely slaughtering you over and over, and each time you have to spend money to replace gear or fix your ship, and the nightmare gets worse

then the game should work

if it doesn't - you could start by trying an older proton version, available in steam > game properties

pretty solid for a "release" build also .. which is rare for any big game these days

most launches r plagued by bugs and systems that don't function as intended (like a certain other game we all know and love)
