I am not asking sarcastically. I'm trying to identify how these approaches differ from unity games that presumably used the engine unsuccessfully.
The reason I hate Unity are two fold. First, the contract with respect to licensing the use of the engine grants developers with very limited access to the root elements of the engine with respect to how it runs, without developers putting down a lot of money upfront for a special license and second, they replaced one licensing exploit with another to drive developers into buying higher tier licensing plans they don't need.
I hope nobody decides mid development to sell their game to a studio to build up their portfolio and raise the stake of the success for their games. If the studio invests 200k or more to a single indie studio on a personal plan and the game makes even a minor impact, they'll be paying out their ass on runtime fees

Played yes. Play actively? no. Game is awesome though
I got my moneys worth just doing the tutorial it was such a cool concept.
The cracks do start to show after a few play throughs where you start seeing repeating patterns of behavior, but I expect the developer to work on that.
Conceptually it's a very well made simulator of a small city block with a community of people doing their own thing
Even if you aren't into detective shit, watching the way people interact with each other dynamically and see how stories are created in a both inorganic and organic way is mind blowing. I wish other games cared as much about the behavior of their NPC.
How an inorganic story can spawn so many organic subplots...Each and every playthrough had its own stories going off the rail of the main plot
The first playthrough felt so surreal. I wanted to live in that world and really buy furniture and build up my apartment...all things that you can do.
That you can generate random seeds and get an endless number and variety of city block layouts with different types and values of apartments is just icing
Shadows of Doubt also have a discord. The users share their seeds so people that see an apartment they'd like to buy or a story they'd like to play can simply load up someone elses seed with the aforementioned interests in it
I have no idea what the game is going to look like when it's finished but I know it's fantastic now even with the jank
My advice for a new player: Do the tutorial campaign.
It might feel simple, but it introduces you to many mechanics

With the speed programmed learning is moving, a game developer that goes all in with programmed learning may decide to create a life sim where characters are truly motivated dynamically...which may very well undermine any need to create any narrative cohesive story (the most time consuming part of making a game with a story to tell).
All a dynamic programmed learning has to do is balance the narrative it has as big or small as it is and try to adhere to that objective in some fashion, while a game without programmed learning that is highly structured is immediately competing with the inability to create player experiences that are tailored to gameplay
They could end up releasing their project into a gaming market that has jumped the ship on structured narrative experiences in favor of more dynamic ones.
