You can't switch out mods while the game is running. Have to exit, make your mod changes, then restart, but do not need to start a new save or anything silly like that.

The only things that will disappear are items that aren't able to be placed at all, normally
If it's something that can be placed somewhere else, just not there, it's safe to place it with a mod then remove the mod
Hello all. So I’m currently doing the expedition and I’m almost done with it. I went to craft bait earlier and saw that I never got the blueprints from the milestone for finding the second angler’s note. Trust me when I say I’ve tried everything to acquire them. #nms-questions pointed me here to see if I can possibly acquire the recipes via save editing. I already tried NomNom, but it doesn’t work for seasonal saves. So I’m here asking if there are other alternatives to modding in the recipes.

Don't use mod managers with NMS, just copy-paste PAK files into the dedicated folder
LUA scripts are used with program called AMUMSS, it's a mod builder that compiles mods from vanilla game files by modifying them according to instructions in LUA scripts

I personally love it, as it allows me to do pretty much anything without the hassle of glitch building and some other limitations. It's just not in-game, so you may have to switch back and forth at times.

Is there a save editor or other tool that allows you to reorder your bases easily? like drag/drop? I'm using NMSSE, and it appears the best way to do it is to copy/paste the JSON -- paste one in another external document, then replace that one with the other, then copy/paste from the external document to replace the other. But it's fairly annoying and prone to errors.
I'm really wanting to group my Galaxy Portal bases together, and have my most frequently used bases at top of my list.

All platforms will have the same issue. Some better, some worse.
NMS is creating everything you see from math and assets during runtime. There will always be floating point precision issues. Rendering things that rely on locations of other things like land can only be done so far without introducing a lot of issues.
If "it" is happening more while moving faster, the only thing you can do is improve hardware and/or run the hardware more efficiently. None will remove the issue, but it could make it "better".
In other words, NMS is trying to render the stuff, but it's waiting for your hardware to finish doing other things.

Yes, new update usually means a new build of MBIN Compiler will be needed to read new game files
So mod authors will wait for MBINC to be updated, then we can start updating our mods

So, I need a bit of help I think, I don't really know what to google anymore.
I found an exotic ship, but I wanted it in a different color. I googled a ton but it seemed too complicated for me personally to edit the right things in the save file. But I found out, you can import a seed for some ships. I had an explorer (half damaged but able to fly) in stock, so I imported the ship in another color over that ship. It was completely empty but I rebuilt or imported everything, I even bought storage.. but the cockpit is that weird shiny way. And I don't know how to get rid of it. I restarted the game several times but that didn't help. For comparison another pic, how it's supposed to look like.
TL;DR: Cockpit looks weird, how to fix it?

I didn't really intended to use mods tbh. I just don't understand, why it is in the yellow ship but not in the red one.
What exactly did you do to change the colour of the exotic? Did you only change the seed? And why am I seeing an exotic on the left and a fighter on the right?

I imported a seed of the yellow exotic onto the found explorer and changed the ship type.
Because it is, I already destroyed the red exotic, so I couldn't make pictures of that one for comparsion

yes. I had a previously found ship and after looking at that edoitor tool I found that you could import a seed from a specific ship and I tried that - instead of editing the colors cause I found no video or pictured tutorial and the tutorial itself was too unclear for me.

Editing colours in raw json is complicated. The alternative is indeed to change the seed value to one that matches the model and colour you want, but it has to be the same ship type.
You only change the seed, you do not import a seed, which is what confuses me

Basically yes, you have a ship you want, but the wrong colours, you then edit the seed for it and you're done. Starting all this from a completely different ship is making it a lot more complicated.
The save editor only changes what you tell it to, so it is basically missing out on the proper 'basis' to start from
Thats why you are often best importing from an .sho file thats been saved from an original found in game ship

for the record the glare is quite literally just a reflection from the sun
and exotics uses the same cockpit interior as explorers
Ok in the goatfungus root folder, make a folder called exported and put the .sh0 file in it, you should be able to import the exotic in the picture. Basically its as if you had just bought it. If you import it, it should go in a free ship slot instead of overwriting a ship

doesn't really matter, the explorer cockpit is curved and angled differently, the cockpit positions are also different in difference ship types
try it in space and spin around and you'll see the glare go away when it's not shone at by the sun
unfortunetley thats the best I can do for you, my only other advice would be find a yellow one in game
You will not eliminate the glare on the displays without using a mod.
All displays in all ships will do this. You just didn't see it because of the sun angle and the display angle.
well, those exotic do it far worse than others it seems. I've had fighters and solares and an explorer but didn't use it much and same with a shuttle and none did it as hard at those.
I took a look at some mod but it makes everything darker it seems, which is not good for me, since I'm sensory sensitive and hard of seeing. If it's darker, I can't see properly.

The display glare reducer mod doesn’t make anything darker. It just makes the glare less. 🤷♂️

It's a new helmet, you can see on 2nd screen it's a new option 18, in vanilla game there's only 17 options
There is no mod support from HGs side in general
You get a warning message when booting up the game with mods that this is not supported so any bugs you get, you have to deal with
@lone idol With NMS, mods are local. May be able to see side effects, like a mod that makes you move faster, others may see you warp across the screen, but in general, to see and experience the same things, people have to use the same mods.
Plus this is based on a reference node, not dedicated mesh node
Even if custom descriptors would sync in MP, I dont know if game would know what to do with it
Also, again general rule, we can't add truely new types of things, more either unused vanilla models, like this one or skins replacing existing.
I mean that they are literally just coloured darker and does not reflecct light at the same level as all other environments, not the environment itself is not receiving the same amount of light

Hi, it's not technically about NMS but the use of NomNom software to export save to JSON
To explain my problem, I wanted to export my NMS PS4 save to my PC, so i exported my NMS PS4 data and decrypted it with Save Wizard
I can successfully read it but i can't seem to export it to JSON, idk why

i am not sure if this is the right channel, but i am not seeing anything more technical.. are there any good resources on how seeds are generated and related to each other?
i am looking for something that seems like it should exist; a way to take a system's portal code and derive the seeds for the local planets, their ships, tools, ect from the code, but it does not seem to exist. is it just a matter of people not having figured out the algorithms involved?
it is difficult to find any technical info among all the aged forum posts full of yapping gamers saying funny things like "systems dont have seeds"
i am just assuming that the system coordinates encoded in the portal code are the top level seed. is that wrong?

Hey there.. new to the modding scene but tried the Relive- exhibition json mod. I recently played ME and the idea of getting the Normandy frigate really appealed to me.. so I successfully did the mod and got to the rendezvous 5 and needed quicksilver. Well I was stuck so I took a break. When I did that I went online with my steam deck and NMS updated and now even when I go offline the save file says the exhibition is over.
TLDR; is there a way to make sure I can finish the exhibitions when I go online with my steam deck only with other games and not NMS? Is there anyway I can stop it from updating?
I got really bummed that I spent all that time for it to just end and I didn't get the Normandy
I guess the other question is that if I use a save editor or something or the like would I have access to repurchase the exhibition rewards using quicksilver in the future or will I be forever needing to use a save editor to have those rewards?

when you use a NMS save editor, can you "adjust" the parts you built a custom ship from? in term of, i found better wings after the craft, can i "replace" them this way? dont want to scrap an entire S class ship with tons of slots unlocked
If the ship was fabricated then yes, it's a matter of finding the group descriptor ID in save data then replacing it with a new one

Since prolly none of the save editors have the functionality to edit that in GUI, you will need to edit the raw JSON data
Look for DescriptorGroups section towards the end of the save file, replace the wing part name with another one, remember to keep the "^" signs

But in general yes, main expeditions rewards can be claimed on other saves, past or future
I did Utopia a couple of days ago and it worked very smooth. But I never paid attention to the rewards as I had done it when it was live, sorry.
I used Goatfungus to unlock rewards from other expeditions I had missed, and that is a cakewalk.
I was just messing around with this as well and was easy enough to do but if you read up the chat you will need to make sure NMS stays completely offline for it to work. If you try to go online or if NMS updates then it will kick you out of the expedition which was very frustrating after spending a couple hours doing the milestones.

Yes, the replay of expeditions from the ending year is called Redux.
Appearances of...? Not so much, for the most part. The amount of appearance info stored in the saves is minimal. Like with ships, it's the seed and a link to the model file used.
Thanks for the tip! Got the goatfungus editor and it was super simple to get the Normandy reward. Probably will still go through the expeditions since I never did them. It's dangerous to have so much power 😆. Didn't realize how much you can change. 🤯

Do you mean the 1 exact preset that you set in appearance modifier machine and use throughout the actual gameplay? Also yes

hallo. i couldnt create a .pak file with amumss. i did everything right from putting the .lua file in the modscript folder to running the bat file. the supposed pak file should be in the NMS MODS folder automatically right? in my case, there is none

I cannot seem to find the JSON file in the NMS directory, do you have to us a seperate utility to gain access to the file?

When sharing saves in a report to Hello Games, it is best to create a package/archive of the full folder shown for your platform above (.zip/.rar).
I went and looked in the savegame folders as well, I guess I'm just used ot having it be a file that can be accessed without having ot use another utility, except maybe Notepad++, for every other game I ever modded. Thanks. Any suggestion on which save editor is the most user friendly, I have some modding experience but not a huge amount?

You will not see a .JSON file in these folders, the save files have a .HG format
Save editors will open these files and allow you to modify them, the issue is I doubt any of them were updated to account for new stuff added with the Cursed update
So all you can do is use them to edit raw JSON data which is kinda advanced stuff

Yeah I gathered it was somthing like that form your comment. I mean Ive never modded a game that didn't just have its JSON file expesoed to the user without having to use a translation layer of any kind before. First time for everything I guess. I dont mind editing the RAW file, someone has helpfully added al the object calls into a nice list here in this thread, so in theory I should just be able to cut and paste it in there, i was just lost trying to locate the JSON.now I know why, Backed up my save, gonna give it a whirl. thanks for the info cheers 🙂

Has not been working for experimental last month, and I gave a heads up on that. Now this went public with the new update, and no fix yet
For any game mode NomNom appears to work fine, apart from expedition. So if you plan on playing the expedition, you are not able to load that save into the editor
After you finished the expedition and it gets converted back to normal mode it works again
I am currently forced to use a customised python tool to do anything with expedition saves
I have not started the expedition yet. I figured to do this this morning while i wait for my friends to get on, then show them how to do it, then we will go do the expedition. it should be ok to do it before we go on the new expedition right?
If you mean to edit an existing save, before using it for an expedition, then yes, this should work.
I have actually not even tested what would happen using NomNom on an existing save that started the expedition. I used a fresh save to start it

Do keep in mind though that neither save editor even has the new items listed or functional. They just show with their internal references (IDs), but otherwise not recognised
Correct, any of the main rewards unlock account wide. How you start (existing or fresh) is your choice to make
I just want it for the OLD expedition rewards. for the ones i missed back when since it seems they dont plan on rerunning the older ones from a cpl years ago.
Ah in that case, you do not have to worry much at all, as those are in the account data, which is a separate file altogether.
I guess I thought it would be the same, so there is an "acct data save" and then a "character save" and they are seperate are they?
Load the editor, make sure to select the 'Account' to edit

ok, so i got the nom nom going, opened the save, checked the "add all" selection under account for expedtition rewards, hit save. but it did not unlock them in game. did i do it wrong? ***oh i just saw a "save account" button maybe thats it?

you can edit stuff into a ship cargo area in NomNom, then use NMSC app to save it to their file, then with NMSC import that ship into your expedition save

does anyone happen to know which file contains the model and/or texture for Small Timber Wall B? i've been looking through using the pcbanks explorer but i've yet to find it. 🤔
i'm not sure. been using the decompressinator mod and it makes that particular piece invisible. still has collision, but it's not visible, so probably a texture problem?

i found a file (TexBiomesCOMMON) that seems to have a bunch of building piece textures in it, so i replaced that one with the original from Steam and no dice.

all timber objects use the same textures
i wasn't sure if that was the correct one or not, but if it's not a texture issue then i need a different file

ig you can grab the mesh one but that'd defeat the entire purpose of decompressing
on top of that it sounds more like a game issue either way
i'd like to grab the mesh one to at least make sure that's the issue
it's the one that has the word "mesh" or "model" in it
since you have NMSPE you can prolly search for "timber"?

not in the file name but NMSPE searches for whole paths anyway
looks like it's in MeshPlanetBIOMES, interestingly? gonna verify, re-run decompressinator, then replace that file and see if it's fixed
if that fixes it, then i might try extracting just those few files and leaving them loose until the issue maybe gets more attention from the mod creator.
and of course a patch would drop and begin downloading and updating as soon as i started this oml. 
loving that the shaders file takes the most time, by far, to extract and re-pack even though it's not the biggest one

Yes, consider all mods becoming outdated with each game update, especially larger ones
Check out whether updates are available on Nexus Mods
Or use tools like AMUMSS / NMSMB to recompile the mods yourself
I would have no idea how to recompile them myself

the guide for AMUMSS is great, I suck at that stuff but learned it
The most difficult part is AMUMSS installation
especially when you have some wacky antivirus like Avast
I only use Windows defender
Actually updating the mods boils down to copy-paste-double click - press couple keys - wait for process to finish
following up on this, it isn't the textures or the mesh--it's the scene that's broken. which is great because that's one of the smaller files already, so having that one be compressed shouldn't be a huge performance hit.
I got 2 mods that there were too many errors or conflicts, so I have to be patient

i'm on PC and am going though old expeditions at the moment, replacing the file in Appdata
i'm stuck on expedition 2 "Echo Through The Ages"
Following the marker takes me nowhere, i even tried to teleport to the coordinates i found on the wiki
But the marker doesn't update at all and i'm stuck 2 missions off of finishing the entire expedition lol
Anyone with a fix?
No idea for a fix, as this is unintended territory for old and likely outdated expedition data used, that can get bugged as the game gets updated. If you are using a guide or mod or otherwise, I would suggest reporting to whoever created/provided the info/functionality for you
I'd like to finish the expedition "legit style", but if there's no way to manipulate missions state easily i''ll just edit the rewards in i guess

I know they try hard to keep it all functional, and I do support the effort, as it is much more interesting to actually replay them than simply grabbing the rewards alone. There may just be some issues every now and then, and it is hard for use to provide help for.

Anything that was not updated for the last major version of the game has a good chance to brick it

Hi, I just screwed up and accidentally "salvaged" at least 6 starships (5 A class and 1 S class) all with inventory. :*( I
I downloaded NomNom and I managed to get to the Manager page where I can see all the tabs. Looking at the Starship tab, I see only the two that escaped the results of me being a complete idiot.
I guess my question is...will I be able to recover the other ships here, or since I only installed this AFTER I messed up, are they lost?
When I click the "Assistant for No Man's Sky" button to the right, I see all 7 ships there - so does this mean at the very least I can recover the cargo of those ships I lost?
If there is a guide or something that would help I'm not opposed to reading it instead of asking questions but Im soo lost today :/

DUD’S SKY - TERRA FIRMA has the deepest oceans possible, which is not much different than vanilla in depth. There is a hard coded cap for the sea floor.
There are mods that claim they make ocean deeper, but first it’s impossible and second when looking at those mods, it’s clear the authors don’t understand how terrain gen works.

I have all the graphics on ultra but when I take a photo it looks pixelated, I put the steam option to see the screenshots in a separate folder but it is still the same.
this afaik is moreso an issue with steam--if you take screenshots using another program they tend to come out better. windows' built-in snipping tool works okay for this--some people use OBS or other third-party programs
i've also seen others suggest running the game at a higher resolution just for screenshots, but i haven't tried that
Make sure you take screenshots with f12 instead of clicking. They come out significantly higher resolution if you do

Hey people, does any of you uses PTSD? How do you deal with sentinels, like groups guarding the pillars or manufacturing facilities? I can’t take out a single quad, cause the repair bots keep spawning, and repairing it faster than I damage it

Not strictly necessary though, as NMS mods, which are game file replacements have NO direct access to your save data.
Your game save files would be the only thing to backup.

Remove a mod .pak from your MODS folder and mod effects will be removed, as vanilla game file will then be used.

Hello all. I am trying to combine some conflicting mods that I'm using, but one of them requires extra files in order to replace some product icons. I do not know how to correctly change the path in the lua file itself so I figured id give the MEFTI function a try but I still can't seem to figure this thing out. The rest of the combined mod works just fine, but the item icons still aren't being replaced. I know I'm missing something but I just don't know what. This is my first time having to take these extra steps with a mod so any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time! 🙂

No. The mod author simply referenced either changing the path in the Lua script or using amumss but didn't elaborate. I read the amumss rules regarding the topic but it didn't clarify what I was missing.

a lotta mods have multiple versions in one download so they'll fuck with each other
i havent run into any problems with vortex actually. but I have gotten into the habit of just manually modding anyway now that im more comfortable with the basic functions on amumss
it's fine if you feel comfortable using it you'll be recommended to not use Vortex either way because it's a known source of confusion and issues

i somehow managed to have an older version of the textures folder in there that didnt contain the rest of the destination folders and files

no, the app is fine but I can do anything to Chose Save path
do you see any useful output on the terminal output when you run the jar file directly from a command prompt? maybe try to uninstall all java runtime versions, then reinstall latest;
if java exe is in path, then you should be able to just cd to folder where NMSSaveEditor.jar is, and java -jar NMSSaveEditor.jar
if java exe isn't in path, then provide full path to java runtime exe first or full path to NMSSaveEditor.jar, while being in java exe folder ofc
(i'm not on windows, i'm unable to repro this issue, but i don't use oracle's java runtime, i use openjdk's https://openjdk.org/)

Can you browse to the Save editor installation and show me the files in the folder?
Remove the MNSSaveEditor-master.zip, remove the NMSSaveEditor-master folder you extracted. Then create a new folder somewhere you can easily find again
Make sure the folder you create for the Save Editor is not in a location that is protected
Then go download the Save Editor from here and put it in the folder you created for it

Do not click that 'green' Code button to download anything that way
You should be getting either a self-extracting archive, or you download the proper .zip file to extract yourself
The self-extracting archive is an .exe, which may get blocked when trying to execute. Make sure it is not blocked, so it can extract to the location specified.
Once you did this correctly, the files should be like this
The .exe above, is the self-extracting archive, and the NMSSaveEditor.bat is what you run for the program

You mean the tech modules like Crimson Core or Luminance Engine?
Then you either need to find a mod that makes those craftable and makes the standard tech removable and install them
Or use save editors to well, do the same but in a save editor - add Sentinel tech, remove standard tech

There is just a mod, that makes some stuff craftable via unlocking from nexus, but I just want to alter the items that are better suited for me

If it has a LUA or C# script then you can try editing that and compiling it yourself
