@slate veldt I looked into the star thing. I can’t make the square thing happen on my PC. This tells me that it’s a shader thing and if it’s only in VR then it’s VR specific shader thing or some kind of VR driver thing or hardware.
If I’m right, it will only be fixed by HG or Vulkan or the hardware mfg. It might be mitigated by lowering the brightness of all stars through creating custom palettes for it. Might see if changing some video settings affect it?

Looks to me like maybe a shader is not using a transparency flag like it should but it could be many different things causing it.
People will come to this channel asking about save-editing, but this is a channels for mods, so those few experts in save editing don't hang here all the time. In NMS-land mods and save-editing are considered two separate things with different knowledge and skill sets.
As far as finding a specific mission, just have to dig through the raw save json. No magic trick to it. Very tedious and time consuming.

Technically possible, but most certainly not recommended. Likely quicker to actually do the missions, unless you are only looking for a single tiny step to progress

I was wrong about the color palette mitigation option as a possibility. I was remembering wrong. You can only dim the star effect with really bright space colors and it will change while on planet surface.

I have seen sporadic questions about the same thing, but looking up footage on YouTube, it seems it's definitely not universal. May even try rolling back drivers a bit
It could be a lot of things.
A few off top of my head:
The VR hardware renders this way. In other words, the driver and the hardware together render that way. (This could be an optimization method or various other reasons it might be on purpose.)
Vulkan does not play well with your VR. Which could be a Vulkan issue (not likely) or VR driver issue.
Could be HG making it happen that way with their shader pipe for that in VR. Maybe on purpose.
Since we have no practical way of dealing with shaders now, I can't see if it could be changed there. If it's a HG thing, it's a shader pipe or (not likely) an .exe thing. They must change those, we can't.

I really think your best route is to report WITH SCREENSHOTS. That seems to be the most likely solution.
I agree with it being a shader thing, but maybe not on purpose, simply because it actually seems to be quite rare. I've seen maybe 7 or 8 people asking about it, and 1 other screenshot but me. But I've also seen a good deal of footage that doesn't have it.
Regardless, I'm still going to look into various mods you've made just as a way to spice other things up a bit.

Some people do but we mod authors recommend not to use Vortex
Vortex (or any other mod manager) can not tell conflicts between mods due to how game files are handled
Plus, some of us (me) put multiple versions of the mod in the Nexus zip file and leave it to you to choose which one you want. Vortex doesn't like that and installs all of them

Nope, but you will find it handy if you want to use more than a minimal number of mods. Without combining\merging, using AMUMSS and Lua scripts, NMS can only use ONE mod .pak that changes any particular game file.
Example, you put two game .paks into your MODS folder. Those two mods both change REWARDTABLE (the most commonly modded file in NMS). Only the last loaded will work, the other will do nothing.
AMUMSS can also check for these conflicting .paks.
So, you don't NEED AMUMSS, but then again, you technically don't NEED 10 fingers either. 1 for use, 9 as spares. 🙂

actually I do have a general modding question. How do mods work with nultiplayer? Like, for example, jasondude has a mod in there that affects how many rounds are fired in a burst. Multiplayer just trusts the other clients and goes with whatever they say? Mods get disabled? I'm not sure how it works.

NMS MP is really pretend. Doing your own thing, with other players in the vicinity
Ex. your player position gets send, but not the shape of the terrain you're on
Or the colors of things if using a color mod
So if you have a mod that changes planet generation and spawns a mountain for you, other players will see you walking in the air
Of course. But for things like projectiles, speed, player location, it trusts the client. Good to know!
I didn't think it would transfer your mods or anything like that (A horrifying thought tbh) so visual stuff will always be per player. Was more wondering about objects, and that link sums it up perfectly.
I think AI behavior and projectiles and player actions are synched. I’m not sure what controls the AI behavior. I can see it change if I go close to some AI ships that are near another player ship. I can see the other player react to it. I only guess it’s controlled by the local instance host?
Each session has a host and the host shits out the AI to other players iirc

it sets the flag for legacy colours for starships
At one point in game's development, HG changed how the colours are applied to starships
A starship with the same seed can have two colour variations: one using the old rules, one using the new (current) ones
This flag is initially set for our 1st starship - that's why Radiant Pillar is red and white
If you try to add it in save editor using the same seed but without the option for legacy colours, it will be green and white

I don't know a lot about this, but I don't think there is ever a real black in NMS.....maybe somewhere but I haven't seen one yet. I'm pretty sure there is a shader flag in the texture material that's doing some light reflecting and it might also be coloring the reflection. Depends on the texture. You can't have black without light reflection...or atleast some cuz it would look really bad.

On that one pic with the purple and green, the purple is ambient light. The green I think is ambient light and a material coloring....possibly. I would almost have to see it in motion and the whole surrounding area to know.

There are a bunch of ship textures that have a reflection and that reflection is colored in the material.....which will be colored the same every time no matter ambient light.

The ship in the UI menu has a single point light that's basically almost white and the LUT filter is passthrough..... so that UI image is basically naked from external coloring.
If you look at the cockpits of most ships, you'll see a purple-ish blue (if I remember right) reflection. That's not reflecting external color, it's always that color based on the material.
I know HG likes color and not black and white so much. I suppose they do that to black because if there is not proper light in a location, you'll still be able to see the texture somewhat instead of it looking flat black and all weird like. Realistic would be to always shine a wee bit of white off of it, but HG like color 🤷♂️
yeah, but that just ruins colored ships even more, if its not near green, the black looks off putting and is extremely distracting

In order to change it, you would have to mod a bunch of material files/make custom ones and or textures for ships.

I think the black miscoloring might be related to procedural texture color layers. My unique ships where I use black come out true black.
There are also some places where HG did a poor job on the textures. I don't know if it's possible to fix the procedural issues, if that's what's happening. The static textures could be cleaned up, but I would need a list of all of them
im confused here. can i run multiple .pak files that don't contain lua without amumss or is it required to run multiple .pak files regardless and by the looks of the requirements on nexusmm it's not a quick task to complete?

Yes, with NMS mods are local. That being said, depending on your mod loadout, you may see things differently than your friends do that you're playing with.
Combining with .paks is a last resort thing. Comes with a host of limitations. The files in the .paks are NOT updated to current version, can't combine multiple .paks with the same game file. Always best to use just .Lua scripts.
Nearly all "modern" mods that would work with Orbitals have .Lua scripts.
Probably on the order of 80-90% of mods since 2019.
If you run into any that you can't find an Lua script for, just ask. May be one floating around.

@vapid tide AMUMSS processes .Lua scripts. Without AMUMSS, Luas are worthless and do nothing. The main purposes for using AMUMSS\Lua are two fold:
- To self update mods to latest version. This is important, because NMS mod .paks are, for the most part, NMS major version specific. You try loading any mod .pak that makes changes to a global file that was made for NMS 4.52 and try loading it in NMS 4.63, enjoy the game crash.
- To combine mods that conflict with each other (make changes to the same game file(s)).
Mod .paks contain complete copies of the game files the mod makes changes to.
NMS can only use one copy of a given game file.
So, if you have two mod .paks that make changes to the same game file, only the last loaded will work. First mod .pak loaded will replace the vanilla game file, 2nd mod .pak loaded will replace the 1st mod .pak loaded.
If you're just running a handful of mods, probably not much of an issue.
The more mods you use, the more likely you'll get mod conflicts.
As an example, let's take the REWARDTABLE file. Probably something like 25-50% of mods make changes to this file. Without combining\merging using Luas processed through AMUMSS, you get to choose one and ONLY one of these mods to use, because that's all that will work.
So, if you want a mod for more QuickSilver and a mod to get more words to learn languages faster, then you would need to combine them or pick one and forget about the other, because they will both be making changes to REWARDTABLE. 🙂
There's a reason so many mods for NMS have Lua scripts. Almost a necessity for combining\merging if you use mods.

Idle commentary. I was looking at the NMS Center site to toy with making a custom ship.
The fact that it can deliver a ship directly to you seems like black magic
Does anyone uses vortex mod menager for this game?
Vortex has issues due to the way NMS modding works. 1) Mod .paks, for the most part (exceptions being pure TEXTURE mods and some model replacement mods), are only good for the NMS major version they were created for. Vortex will happily allow you to install a 4 month to 8 year old mods that'll crash your game. 2) With NMS mods, the game will only use one copy of a given game file in a mod .pak, last loaded wins. So, if you have multiple mods that make changes to the same game file (incredibly easy to do if you use more than a handful of mods), only one will work. We call this a conflict. Vortex doesn't check for these either.

The above being said, you can use a tool called AMUMSS to check for those conflicts and can be used to solve them by combining\merging conflicting mods into a single .pak, using the Lua scripts that are available for most mods.

Not really. Put Lua scripts in a folder, run a batch file, done.
Looking through, you have at least one conflict, I can see off the bat.
Both DerelictAlwaysSCalss, and More Words use the REWARDTABLE file.
Better Ship Transfer Range and Faster Analysis too. Both use the GCGAMEPLAYGLOBALS game file
Might be others, but you'd need to do a conflict check to be certain

Yes. The 2 pairs I mentioned that I know for sure conflict with each other, have the Luas included in the downloads from NexusMods.

Before you attempt anything I would recommend checking the seed value against Mjstral's customizer bot database
Preview the seed and see what kind of design it will spit out
If the seed value results in a different coloured ship then maybe something is wrong with game files

Different seeds will be different ship combinations with different colors. Are they all blue?

I was asking about it somewhere else yesterday, but do yall know if there's a way to keep the game from pausing when tabbing out?
I know calculations like timers and refiners continue, but aiming specifically to keep the game running so I can tab out during things like transitions and travel.
I was considering that I could possibly find out what addresses are triggered by being in multiplayer(since the game can't pause in MP) and seeing if those can be manually triggered to operate in SP, but that'll be a hugely time consuming process, so I figured I'd ask around here first lol

Lots. Beyond Base Building, gBase, Unlimited version of Ultra Base Building. Be aware that scaling (resizing) breaks snapping, so if you make to big or small, you'll be using free placement a lot.

This limitation isn't something modding can fix. Design of the build system. Scaling is dynamic, while snaps are static. As the size of the object changes, the snaps stay in the same place, so either get put outside the bounds of the object or buried within.

The installation is the most difficult bit
Once you're done, it's copy-paste-run to compile mods
Put Lua scripts into ModScript folder, run buildmod.bat. How's that difficult?

Do the ship trading glitch at a normal space station and u should dc for 3 seconds or so, ship will spawn back in and ur friend should be able to get in without buying the ship. Stats and sc slots will be transfered

yeah, that's what i thought... thing is, just now when i finally got to the anomaly with my new save, not a single other player, and after i turned all mods off in vortex, boom, a bunch of players...
personal experience is otherwise anecdotal
but feel free to post MODS folder so we can see what mods you have

yeah something with my mods is causing me to not be able to connect... should not be the case but it is... if i switch to a vortex profile with none of the mods enabled, i connect and get palyers in the animaly, if i have teh profile with the mods enabled, not a soul appears

Since using Vortex, chances are several of those aren't even working due to conflicts, but yeah, outdated mods are BAD
amumms reports no conflicts, and those that were reported as conflict by amumms, were merged accordingly.
With the exception of pure TEXTURE, shader (ArghWater) and to a limited extent model replacement, mods MUST be updated to at least the latest major version of NMS (4.6x currently). Else they'd be missing data from their files in most cases.
thing is, just because a mod has not been updated since a big patch does not mean it nessesariely NEEDS an update, at least that's wwhat i would think logically. but as i said, i'll test with the older than 2024 ones removed temporariely and see then...

Most of those, prior to 3/27/2024 should have Luas, so you can update yourself, if the author hasn't updated the .paks

Completely dependent on if HG has changed something in the game file or not. MUCH easier to update via Lua and be certain, than to go through each game file individually to see if anything has changed in the vanilla file or not.

If you installed a mod that changes flora and minerals such as BPG, then this is normal/a known issue.
If you're used to games where all things stay the same, except for exactly what the mod changes, NMS is not one of those. As we are limited to what can be changed and how, it's not unusual, especially with bigger mods, that there are unintended side effects, which a mod may not be after to fix or avoid.
THat's not to say this always happens, but it can.

@trim nymph I believe you'd need the ability to install the Xbox app on a PC. I don't know if the Xbox Microsoft store works on Mac. Highly doubtful.

I just caught the discussion. For you to be able to get access to your saves, you will need to be able to run the Xbox app, which I assume will be Windows only, not Mac. There is a save editor which can run on Mac as a Java application, but that would be the next step

That would at least allow you to run the Save Editor.
The issue is they play NMS on Xbox. Their initial question was is if they can save edit. I explained they can via Game Pass Ultimate but with access to a PC in order to sync the Xbox save files.

As said, you will need to be able to run the Xbox app, which is Microsoft and not on Mac

So unless you are able to create a Windows session on your mac to install the Xbox app and use it to sync the files with, there is not much you can do.

When sharing saves in a report to Hello Games, it is best to create a package/archive of the full folder shown for your platform above (.zip/.rar).

Save Editing in short, is altering your actual save data. This allows you to do pretty much anything with your save state, from adding items, to learning tech, to giving yourself ships, units, expedition rewards, or anything the game stores in that data

True, but you are technically only altering your own client side game/save
And being able to kill some other player, is dependant on the other player's game settings. Sure you can make it really easy for yourself to a point you pretty much spoil your own game, but why would you? We recommend to be careful using a save editor and allow the game to remain at least somewhat of a challenge.

No Man's Sky is perfectly fine when it comes to modding. It just depends on the platform if modding can be done to begin with. There is for example no way to mod the game on Mac. Access to save files is something else, where on console this is sometimes impossible, other times needs a workaround.
Here’s a question for you, my original problem was that I traded a ship with an npc at space station and forgot to transfer all my items but when I got to the space station I had to get out of my ship so it should have saved then right?
Correct, as soon as you exited your ship in the Space Station, a restore point was created. Anything after may have only been an auto save. So unless you created another restore point since, you should be able to load up the previous save. You can do this in-game, through the game Options.
But the problem is I created another one because I got in and out of my the one I got from trading to see if my items were transferred

What you describe above, created another new restore point, which overwrites the previous. There is no way to retrieve any previous auto/manual saves, only the latest of each will exist unless you make backups

For that matter you are screwed. The only way to make up for it, is by playing or using tools like a save editor

No, AMUMSS is a mod builder
It allows you to compile / build mods based on LUA scripts
It's like a blueprint that contains instructions which game files to grab from your copy of the game and how to modify them
AMUMSS is not a requirement when it comes to just using mods in simplest of cases
There isn't a good mod loader\manager for NMS. Manual is the way to go
But it's nice to have it because it allows you to 1) detect conflicts between mods and 2) merge mods

and even then, vast majority of mods would need to have been updated in the last 3 weeks to work correctly or not crash the game. Exceptions with more longevity are model replacements and pure TEXTURE mods.

If you wanted a specific color, you'd set 64 of the same in the palette

It may not actually be random. I believe that the seed determines which lines in a palette are used. I've not tested this though and as we can't decode the seed, ostensibly it's like being random.

Seed determines color from palette. That’s why it’s always same for every player. Also some things can’t be proc colored because they don’t receive seed info.

Did you do anything extra than setting the param in the table to true in the descriptor group table? When I tried the option wouldn't show up in the UI unless a cape is chosen

Actually there is two files to edit:

So it's just specifically coded in the UI file to cockblock people from seeing it

Though most will recommend stuff like ArghWater or some colour palettes like Duds Sky Colours or Exosolars Expanse

At least 10 of my mods need updating, due to changes in localization files or Technology Table or Alien Puzzle Table MBINs

You will be missing on new items added or changes to existing tech
Because mods work by providing modified copies of whole game files, which house ex. all the fixed stats for tech modules
So you providing an older version over a newer one renders all the changes from update gone

No idea off the top of my head. Amazingly, I don't know the files touched by every NMS mod. Open this in a text editor. If any of your mods make changes to ANY of the 226 changed files in this list, then MUST be updated.

I’ve had wrong MTs or even double exotics in certain systems due to obsolete mods. The game runs but things are wrong. I even had a gravity inversion on dead worlds once. It was fun, I would appear underground and walk on the inside of the surfaces at a weird angle. Jet packing would send me in some sort of space with no gravity but inside the planet!!! Took me a while to understand it was due to an old mod 😂

Any here familiar with AMUMSS and the mod "AutoScannerPlus" ? Since it wasn't up to date, tried to do it myself, it's supposed to basically fix itself with this tool .. but even though i recompiled the pak with the lua, it doesn't work and i don't know what i'm missing
Two things to check. Are you using latest version of the script and do you have any conflicting mod .paks, ones that make changes to the same game files as auroscannerplus
Can run a conflict check in your MODS folder from AMUMSS
run buildmod.bat and choose M for conflict check
Details will be in REPORT.lua
There's no new version of the lua, i barely know what i'm doing, it's literally "some guy" who told me to just run the lua through amumss and it should "fix it" .. which i did, but several points don't match like the local nms_version = "4.63" line for example, well it's not that version anymore so i wonder if i actually just recompiled the mods for shits & giggles and remade it just as outdated as before
Those lines should not matter, it's just metadata
Info about the mod: what its name, who made it, what's the version, etc
IF you run the script through AMUMSS and you don't get any error / warning / notices at the end, then you should be good to go
Maybe this one particular mod does not need to be updated but it's good practice to recompile all the scripts yourself for each update
That way you are certain you have the mod based on the most recent game files

Then you gotta check that the PAK file is present in GAMEDATA/PCBANKS/MODS directory inside game's installation folder
And that the DISABLEMODS.TXT file is no longer present in GAMEDATA/PCBANKS
yep, it is and the disablemods.txt is deleted, and i still get the warning about a mod present but the mod doesn't do anything

Yes, updates generally break mods, that's why tools like AMUMSS exist
Those allow us to generate new versions of the mods compatible with latest game version on the spot
Without having to wait for the mod authors to do it
So if AMUMSS has no issues processing the script and you get the mod warning message, then all should be fine

Using the 1000 skies mod to add a load of variation however because I'm also using a black space mod the coloured skies stand out whilst in space and it can look a little off to me, is there any mod that can get rid of the light around planets? So I can use both mods?

It is shader based as mentioned, but there is a control for it in an mbin somewhere. I’ve messed with it. Something like “atmosphere thickness” for the variable name. It gets weird if you make it really thin, but you can make it zero thickness without issue.

If you're trying to install AMUMSS, you can try running the TOOLS/TEST_AMUMSS_INSTALL.bat script

Very subjective. https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/newrecently# Most mods older than 27 March 2024 will have issues, as not updated for latest NMS, Orbitals. Exceptions to the last are pure TEXTURE mods and some models replacement mods.
Look through, see what interests you or meets a need you see and try them out.
Be aware, by default with NMS, you can use one mod .pak that makes changes to any given game file. So, for example, if one mod .pak makes changes to the same game file called REWARDTABLE.MBIN, you wouldn't want to add another mod .pak which is for that file, as only one of the mods would work (last loaded wins).
To get around that limitation, you can combine\merge mods that conflict with each other, using AMUMSS and the Lua scripts which come with most mods.

No, I didn't have any warning messages. I had a few mods installed and the game would not start, then I disabled most of them leaving only a very few for building and the game started very quickly but the mods didn't work.
If you get no warning, then you either didn't remove DISABLEMODS or you're not using PCBANKS/MODS folder
Oh, or you aren't using PAKs

The mod manager didn't tell you anything about any of it... When you install it, it gives you a short tutorial on how to set it up and use it. but nothing about what you said...
I just found the folder you were referring to, I didn't find either "Disablemods" nor "Enablemods" files. Also, the mods I am interested in are in the PCBanks/MODS folder. And they are in .pak format.
What else can I check?
We don't recommend using mod manager for NMS, as it's easier and more reliable to just copy and paste the PAKs into the MODS folder. Can you show me a screenshot of your MODS folder, including the path?

Okay don’t use the manager. Put pak files only..none of that other stuff…into that MODS folder. Then launch NMS from steam or however you do it with Vortex.

Yes that’s what you need to do. But you only need the pak files. The other files aren’t mods or for mods.

You have some older mods, those will be incompatible with the current game version
Best practice would be to ditch all the mods and pick only mods from the new released or recently updated sections of Nexus
Anything older than 3 weeks or so (since Orbital update was released) can potentially crash the game
Or cause other issues during gameplay

Having old mods shouldn't prevent the mod warning though. It can cause errors and crashes, but if the game launches, it would still show the mod warning message

Not new to the game but havent messed with mods, Is modding this game worth it? and if so is it hard/annoying to do? i havent looked into what kinds of mods there are but im kinda curious what others think.
Starting using mods is not difficult, basically make folder, copy-paste, remove 1 file, all basic file explorer stuff

Is it worth it - that depends solely on what you expect
Dont expect modding on level of other games, where you get total overhauls, new quests, NPCs, mechanics or functionalities added
Modding NMS is pretty limited, we can only tinker with existing values and sometimes shuffle them around to make "new" stuff
Go onto Nexus Mods, browse through new releases and recently updated mods, pick your fancy
Do not download mods that are older than 3 weeks or whenever Orbital update dropped, any mod that was not updated can cause crashes and other issues

Performance is the same no matter if mods are enabled
We don't really have 4k texture packs or stuff like that
Of course if you use a mod to spawn like 200 Sentinels then yeah, you'll see a performance hit
