Hey guys. I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about the game's save files, specifically which keys in the decompressed file relates to what aspect of the game, such as which keys are for inventories, currencies, items, and others. Even just a resource explaining the saves would be helpful.

Would it be possible to export terrain data for a given part of a planet, in something like a height map maybe, in order to use it in obs?

I'm actually thinking about creating such exporter but for 2d planet maps with POIs. But it's a huge task and can take 1-2 years of work.
So we have no tools or anything close that can help here.
Maybe some 3d live model ripper hack tool can help extracting the bare planet model somehow

first you need a save to work with
Open up the save editor, choose save you want to edit. Go through the gui and make whatever changes you'd like, save those changes
There's two save editors available, NMSSaveEditor and NomNom. Both similar in scope, GUI based for basic changes, and meant to be fairly intuitive for operation. Just give a try and look around the interface of the one you wish to try.
small question here, I am very new to modding, but I know there are multiple ways to change your ship appearance, but is it changing how you and only you, see the ship, or does it really change its seed ?
explaination: I have a S-class solar ship that I really love, it is the perfect part combination to me, and with a name I really like.
the only thing I would like to change would be its colors, since it is majorly red, and I dont like red lol
Mods like True Color change the color palette table the game is using, so only you see the change, and it doesn't affect ship stats in any way
Replacing the seed in save editor with change the overall design of the ship, it's stats and SC slot positions
I m fully upgraded so I dont really care about stats and slots
does changing the seed changes the name too ?

You can’t custom paint a ship….unless you are trying to change the palettes for all ships.

If you are trying to make a color for a Royal that doesn’t exist in game then you will have to mod some Royal textures, which will affect all royals in game that used the original color you modded.

Not the discovery, but some of that should be accessible in your saves, via raw json. Both save editors can give you access. Up to you if you want to put together an automated means to parse and scrape just that info out.

there is the https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/1868 that has a mention of them but says its not active due to no having a GcCreatureComponentData entry in the xml but could I not just create my own and repack the .pak to implement the changes or does it go deeper than that?
i guess if you were to make the necessary changes it should work, give it a try, i mean the worse that could happen is it doesn't work.
You need to add the <Property value="GcInteractionComponentData.xml"> block CompanionPet adds to those creatures ENTITY files. This is what adds the E interaction menu for pets. Whether it'll work or not 🤷
Last time I tried enabling the crystal creature it was invisible. I co-author companion pet, btw

you'd need to do a lot more than shoving in an interaction component
you'll need to yeet anything enemy related
you'll also need to yeet any network related data
cos anything not vanilla being net replicated will break your connection in mp
on top of that I'm don't rember much how creature movement is defined but even if it all goes thru your new quad laylaps will prolly be floating
cos obviously you'd prolly need to use the laylaps creature type instead of the corrupted quad creature type
cos they are, in fact, two creatures with different configured behaviour
that is, unless, you fuck with creature data table as well to change up the laylaps type itself
if it is a type that exists in that table
it maybe in robots table

Oh, just looked at the scripts you posted....seem oddly familiar. lol. Those are old and deprecated. That methology crapped out long ago. Wasn't worth the time or effort then to attempt to fix or figure out what was happening, since quad was becoming an official pet and sandworm could be acquired via CompanionPet. This was a hand-me-down mod to me. So I listed myself as maintainer. If I hadn't deprecated it and did a complete rework to fix, then I would change to co-author.
FYI, if your plan is to publish to NexusMods and you're going to use somebody elses script like that 1) ask permission first 2) you'll need to give credit in there to original author(s). For a simple value change script, not necessary, all the same, For the UniqueCompanions line, the methodology was unique (when it worked), so credit where credit is due and NexusMods is actually very protective of authors content.
I have no issues with this anything I'm doing here is for my own use and personal amusement/frustration xD However if I do get it to work I will give it over to someone here to post as I don't care for credit myself, I just like to play and mess with the files of games that allow it.

Can someone help me find a specific mod? I remember playing with one that gave you more control of your ship when flying low, not having the game autocorrect that much for you so you don't hit the ground and in general giving you more leeway to move around, like a more realistic flying model

So I used the companion pet unlocker to get a sandworm but it seems like everytime I summon it, it runs off like 10 seconds later and despawns immediately, is there a way to prevent that? I even tried reducing it's size to see if that'd help

I'm using one and it's all good and dandy but it keeps changing my ships colours despite me changing the setting in the LUA as "OFF" for the repainted ship colours
It's basically a bad roll on traits. From a modding perspective, not much can be done to affect that. You can try save editing though. Read the article at https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/articles/100 and take a look at the comment. Passive is probably your best bet.

Have to keep in mind with the creatures in Companion Pet that HG never meant for them to be pets and in the mod, the main change made is only to add the E interaction menu so they can be pets.

How to make your LS to have Mechanical after 4.0 update
On Raw JSON, your LS will now have new values in new directory.
Although it is a similar one like the one existed in pre-4.0, it's slightly different.
There will be a BaseStatValues folder within each Inventory folder, Inventory, Inventory_Cargo, Inventory_TechOnly.
Find these lines and remove it from all the BaseStatValues folders :

It would work on opposite way, by adding that line onto mechanical ship's BaseStatValues.

if you convert mechanical ship that never have became LS before into LS, the ship will spawn up LS's core parts while keeping its mechanical parts.

so uhhh, i installed gbase EM anywhere basic and "EM anywhere" part of it doesn't work, while the rest of it works. mod was last updated at <t:1689224220:f>, and nexusmods mod page claims it is compatible with 4.35.3a, and i have 4.38. i run on linux PC through steam proton, no windows so no AMUMSS. any suggestions on what can i do?

I've been working on a small app/exe/bot (depends) for custom repainting ships. This is catered towards users that have access to save editor and know how to edit Raw JSON. Users will be required to paste the generated output of this app/bot into correct ship folder in the Raw JSON.
I'm almost at the last leg, so far this app/exe/bot will allow users to:
- Select a ship type (choices between fighter, hauler, solar, explorer, interceptor, living ship).
- Allow hex code to be inputted according to ship type in 5, 4, or 3 fields with easy to understand names.
- On a button press generate a JSON.
This JSON is formatted properly and can be simply copied to replace the Raw JSON in the save editor for custom painting the ship.
Currently only Fighter and Hauler is ready to being tested but the final version will have all of the mentioned ships. I can also make it so that Multi-tools and Freighters are included.
Once I've completed and tested the app/bot (special support and contribution by @night adder) I'll release it for everyone to use.

- Custom painting is only available to PC players (Xbox gamepass on PC users included)

There aren't much optimization mods, the only mod that comes to mind is removing the lag when leaving planets
If you search the Nexus for "lag" it should pop up
As for visuals, highly subjective but most people will recommend you ArghWater, Duds Sky Colours, Exosolar's mods like Stratos

I have a situation that I cannot explain, mods work for me if installed into the standard nms installation folder from steam eg g:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\MODS but not into an alternative install location such as g:\nms_modded\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS\MODS. I usually create a copy of heavily modded games so steam updates do not break my current play through, I do this for a bunch of games and normally don't have an issue but for NSM my second install just won't load the mods. For the second install I of course run the executable from the secondary location, not steam. Any ideas?

ok, so here is something I have also not come across before, if I launch G:\NMS_Modded\Binaries\NMS.exe and open up task manager it tells me the running executable is in G:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries, I am trying further things to understand why this is.
I renamed the original installation folder and as soon as I run the executable in the secondary folder I get an error from steam saying that original folder cannot be found and it tries to download NMS again. It seems that the NMS executable is heavily tied into Steam for DRM or something along those lines to the point you can't even run it from another location. That's a shame since we can't tell steam to no longer update games like we could a long time back.
Not being able to run from another location along with forced updates means we are basically playing with a ticking timebomb as to when our game will break from an update if not mods are not also updated to go along with it. I use this secondary install technique for games such as Valheim, 7 Days to Die, Empyrion etc to prevent this exact problem and they work fine.

Moving it doesn't help, somehow the exe that is launched is almost sort of double checking with steam if it's the "right one" being used (that's as best I can put it so that the idea gets across) and then launches the original exe, I have no idea how this is being done and is a first for me.

If you like you can start unpacking your mods, decompiling them and comparing them manually
Else you can just beg the mod author to make a lua for the mod
right, I also have lua's but the same thing would apply right, several lua's might edit the same entry, amumss will merge them and create a pak but you won't directly know which value it used for a conflict without going through in detail and comparing everything, it won't actually tell you which lines were conflicting
If that's the case you may just want to not use one of the luas anyway

is it possible that amumms is simply announcing a "possible" conflict because it sees two lua's or paks referencing the same named .mbin file even if the values edited within might be different (and therefore no real conflict exists) or is that not how it works?
That's how it works, conflicts are detected on the file level
Modding works by taking an existing game file, modifying it and presenting the game with a modified version of that file
So 2 mods that modify the same file X, but one changing line 10, other changing line 2137 will still be conflicting, because each of them will try to push its own version of file X
What you need in this case is creating a combined mod, that carries over both changes in 1 file
This is done by putting multiple LUA scripts in AMUMSS and selecting the option to create a combined mod
You do know which, last script processed would win in the case of multiple changing the same line.
Let's take the example of two scripts that make changes to the same file. AMUMSS will pull a fresh vanilla copy of the file from your game files. The changes specified in script 1 will be applied, then the changes in script 2.
That modified game file will then be .paked up for your modding use.
Works a bit differently for patch .paks, but we won't go into those, too many potential issues.
if you want to see the differences:
You could run script A **alone **in ModScript, save the EXML_Helper\MODDED files to a A folder (as an exemple)
Run script B **alone **in ModScript, save the EXML_Helper\MODDED files to a B folder
Now you can compare the content of the MODDED files that were reported as CONFLICT

So left side you chose the save to transfer from Game Pass (XB) and fill in the info from Game Pass.
At the right side you choose the Steam save to transfer to, where you then also get the option to fill in the Steam info
From what I know, it is recommended to have a Steam save created already, with just a single base made and saved

The detection fails for both, so you will have to try fill this in yourself.

First off, I would recommend not using Mod Managers. Modding is easy for NMS, and managers can often cause issues
Ok, so download the mods, then browse to the correct location to only put the .pak files.
Then you have to remove or rename one file that prevents mods from loading.

@lime mesa Any mod, that isn't TEXTURE only, older than June of this year would, more likely than not, crash the game. With NMS, mods must be updated to at least the current major version to work.
So, do not bother looking at most endorsed or most popular, many of which would be abandoned older things, just use https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/newrecently#, working backwards, to see what's updated.

Like the first ship I own(the crashed one) will be a ship that I'll use mainly, so I want it to be one I like
You can alter just the seed, which will give you different colours/parts for that specific type of ship. You can also alter ship type or class itself. Just keep in mind that you are not getting the base values to match doing it this way
So sure, your starter is a fighter, if you have a seed value for a cool one, you can change it and it should match looks

Yes, there are values you can alter. Just be careful to stick to values that make sense. I have seen issues when players gave it insane values

Not that I am aware, although some ships will require different technology to be used, so keep that in mind as your inventory/tech is already occupied with specific tech

The big stat to watch out for is Maneuverability. Set it much above 60, I believe is the cutoff value, and your ship will turn into a fidget spinner.
Setting Shield value too high will break MP

An easy way to do it properly, is to get an A-class, add whatever you need to upgrade class at the Space Station terminal, and make it S-class there

Mods are a bit limited in scope compared to like Skyrim but yes PC can be modded. You can use multiplayer while using mods but anything that affects enemies, animals, terrain, etc can cause issues because what you're seeing won't be what they're seeing. Don't do MP with any sort of gameplay/terrain affecting mods unless everyone is using identical mods
Visiting someone else's base while using a terrain affecting mod might have their base appear underground or in the air, for example

It's easy, mods run locally only. Full data is not synced. Let's say somebody else is running a terrain mod. You can see that person running across the sky, because to him/her it's mountainous, but for you a flat plain.
In other games, mods may break MP, because they are designed to do so. In NMS they are designed in a way not to. At least not as often.

It is done by the Save Editor. NMSSE or NomNom are best for this work

i extracted them to the parent directory
it makes it so that the game doesnt have to extract all of that stuff while its running
tradeoff is storage space

we call it "running unpacked" back in the day

weird how the game still found the files when they're not inside PCBANKS tho
maybe the game is set to search the base folder first
in coding you can set it to check an order of folders
or maybe the game is coded to check the GAMEDATA folder and all sub folders
- just in case, backup your save files
- you need https://github.com/periander/PSArcTool/raw/master/PSArcTool.zip (unzip and place the exe somewhere accessible, like your desktop)
- go to nms install dir and find the PCBANKS folder (
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\PCBANKS) - drag one of the .pak files in the folder on top of the PSArcTool.exe you downloaded (it should show "Open with PSArcTool.exe" while dragging it above the exe)
- once the cmd window closes, delete the pak file you dragged on it
- you should see some folders pop up inside the PCBANKS directory, move them to the parent directory (
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA) - repeat until there are no files left except for BankSignatures.bin and DISABLEMODS.txt (not sure if they are needed at all, it might be possible to just delete those, i didnt test it)

For this scenario, the question now becomes, if game files fully extracted to GAMEDATA and leave .paks in PCBANKS, does the game use the files in GAMEDATA? Thinking it should, but not enough spare drive space for me to test this.

The difference would most likely be felt in terms of CPU and drive read/write usage right?
after testing it on my sons pc i can say the performance isn't a gold medal achievement but it is noticeable and does make the game playable for those with weaker computers

I don't think it matters what your rig is for the planet hitch thing. I get it on a 12700k, and I got it just as much on my old poor overloaded 7500
Given you have little to no hitching there, I'd assume it's related to how the game packs and unpacks data on the fly
