So what fuels the engines of the starship, because starship launch fuel only fuels the thrusters. I'm wondering what actually fuels the engines. Nuclear energy from the uranium in the launcher? Ion thusters like NASA is experiamenting with now and like how the ship in Project Hail Mary is powered? That's my best guess.

Pulse drive uses tritium or pyrite, but only when pulse is active

I find it very rewarding to create my own stories and quests. I destroyed all my resources in a starship crash (I just put them on my freighter and pretended they weren’t there), and had a blast trying to survive stranded on a hazard world.

Periodically resetting your resources (or putting them somewhere inaccessible) is fun too

In order to properly justify starting a new save, I require a specific purpose or challenge for myself

Permadeath is pretty self-explanatory, but for abandoned, I set the restriction of not being able to get off planet until I found a crashed starship

Nah, it is just like in the middle of the map where the regions have "arms" of stars with gaps between; near the outer edge there just is no other "arm" further out. If you have great enough hyperdrive range you can jump between arms with arbitrary gaps, but if outside your range, you have to go toward where the arms come closer together (usually more toward the core). At the outer edge, there is just nowhere further out to go.

Sure, the galaxies are just a bit "disc"-like I think, and up or down don't add anything really to the reasoning. But that is one reason there is more than one core edge system. (I think about 12 core edge systems per galaxy, if I recall, but that was an article read long ago; they are distributed all the way around the core gap.)

From what I read (the number of core edge systems is from that reading quite some time ago), the core edge systems are also not all in a flat plane: some are above and some are below the "galactic equator". I did find when I was exploring the edge of the core gap what there are lots of core gap edge systems undiscovered, but all the true core edge systems seemed prediscovered by the time I was poking around (2020 or so). I think I didn't discover a core edge system myself until I was in a galaxy over 150 or so.

A region is a cube with something around 400LY edges, each region contains a couple hundred stars. Therefore, after doing the calculations, Given:
Region edge length: 400 LY. Galaxy dimensions: 4095×4095×255. The total dimensions of one NMS galaxy become: 4095×400≈1.638×106 LY for width and length, and: 255×400≈1.02×105 LY for height. So one galaxy is approximately: 1.64 million LY × 1.64 million LY × 102,000 LY. Now compare that to the Milky Way: Milky Way diameter: ∼100000 LY, So an NMS galaxy is: ~16× wider than the Milky Way roughly similar thickness. One galaxy volume (1.638×106)2×(1.02×105)≈2.74×1017 cubic LY. Across 256 galaxies: 2.74×1017×256≈7.01×1019 cubic LY Now compare to the observable universe volume: ∼4.2×1032 cubic LY. Ratio: 4.2×10327.01×1019 ≈1.67×10−13 So the entire NMS universe is only about: 0.000000000000167 times the volume of the observable universe. Or flipped around: The observable universe is about 6 trillion times larger than NMS. This took so long 😭

There are a few hundred floppy disks sitting within 6 feet of me right now. A mix of 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch. (No 8-inch.) I still use them on the retro systems in this room, but have replaced most of the floppy drives on them with modern flash-based hardware drive emulation devices.

Well, PC Experimental branch is buggy -- and I think all that got pushed live in the last Pub update -- so, yea.

My high school physics teacher was the school district computer chief, and had a teletype acoustic modem in our classroom. If we were good and finished our assignments early, he let us learn BASIC and Fortran on it. (And knowing how to use the teletype got me a job years later!) But we digress: NMS, small though it it, would be hopelessly large in physical media. This was back when a big program was 4k.

I'd love to see how the Mac Studio here plays it -- but I have a weird (square, basically) display and NMS doesn't know what to do with it -- it gives me some very low res as the max res it thinks the screen can display, so I never play on that system.

Macs are based on Apple Silicon (Apple-designed ARM-based SOCs) while Windows PCs and most Linux runs on x64 Intel/AMD CPUs. Very, very different hardware.

If you have a large refinery, throw whatever stellar metal you have in there with gold and silver

So when you're extracting it from ground deposits, set it to the smallest settings so you get a higher yield from that spot. Also, the higher the color tier of the star system, the more chromatic metal you'll get from that system's stellar metal. Planets with extreme weather will also have the activated stellar metal that refines into chromatic metal more efficiently
