Technically, all multitools are melee weapons, you just use the melee key to use them for that. (Instead of the firing key, which only works if the currently selected subweapon is charged)

If you run out of charge, you use the melee key to harvest adjacent minerals until you can charge the multitool.

Lol, mind you, I've never watched in 3rd person to see what the melee animation is (I assume it varies with the multitool type)

Melee in NMS serves only one function, if you happen to somehow run out of charge and have nothing to recharge your mining beam, you can punch stuff to get carbon and fuel your mining beam and start mining properly.

It's more of a failsafe than a mechanic
