There's a different guilds and the pirate faction that you can take missions from at the stations. Your mission computer and your Corvette provide some as well.

Then there's all the main quests all the way up to unlocking purple systems

Depends on a lot of things, but I'd say when looking for a place to start a base, warping around and exploring is the best way to find somewhere you like

0fuel is easy to make, make a bunch, if or when you get a corvette, you can hover it and leave instead of landing it and wasting launch fuel. there is also a launch upgrade that charges it while its parked.

Yes and no. There are such refiner recipes but they aren't as straighforward as what you suggested.
Pure Ferrite refines into Rusted metal which refines to Ferrite.
